I was just wondering if anyone could give some advice here. I spend about 40 dollars a day on pain pills. I spend all of my days trying to find pain pills. It has taken over my life and it has to stop. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about methadone. I have heard it is bad stuff. But at least i could go to the clinic at 7am and pay 12 dollars and be done for the day. There would be no driving around, calling around, sneeking around, etc. I could have my days back. But i know this would be a tempary fix and is not the answer to my drug problem, but would it be possible to wean myself off of the methadone or would it just make things worse? I need some help. thank you
Hi sunshine, welcome! I didn't take meth but many people on here say it is HELL to come off of it.
You might want to think about getting help from someone who will hold pain pills for you and taper down for several days before giving them up cold turkey.

If I was you I would use methadone for about 10 days to just get through the withdrawel, say start at about 10-20mgs or a bit more depending on your habit and within a couple days be bringing it down,I have used it for withdrawing a fair few times but I usually only use it for about 4-5 days,a lot of people do stay on it longterm and it does work well for a lot of people, personally I wouldnt like to be chained to a clinic, because if you stay on it too long, you will have a habit and you wont be able to just walk away, you have to work out whats best for you,but I will say it again,it works real good to just take a small amount for a short time to get over the worst of the withdrawels and if you were going to look at being on something long term,sub...... might be a better go.
Im just about finished my 5th day without using and I went cold turkey this time, nothing to help at all, except for my manuka honey and bee pollen capsules, sometimes I think I might be better off using methadone(no sub.... available here)for a few months, but I really dont want too, stuff the blasted opiates.
Hey I want to tell everybody to have a good look at Manuka honey,I know its exported to the states,Canada etc,if you are ever going to buy manuka honey, make sure it has a certain rating,it is so good for you and if you have any sores, you will be amazed at how good it heals using it as a dressing,by the way I have no finacial interest in any manuka honey companies,I really do just want to pass on a great product, its well worth a look.

Hey sunshine
I was on methadone for seven years and it is hell to get off of. It ireally is not designed for people to get off of. I have finally freed myself of the meth by starting on suboxone it is a milder opaite and is much easier to taper from. I feel so much better now . You can find a dr that will prescribe it for you. I truly do not recomend methadone. I really hope everything works out for you and I wish you the best.

Sunshine,
I think most would tell you to try methadone only as a very last resort, and even then some would say stay away from it altogether. It's very addictive and hard to withdraw from -- I fear it is not the panacea drug you think it is. How many pills are you taking a day, what strength? Maybe we can suggest some alternative ways for you to withdraw off them, and give you the benefit of our experiences. I know that I felt much like you do at the end of my run -- sick and tired of how the pills had taken over my life, but scared as hell of what life would be like without them. I was also very scared of withdrawal because I was taking 20-30 pills a day, plus a barbiturate. However, in the end, my fear of the physical withdrawal was much worse than the reality, and the worst of the flu-like symptoms were over by day 4. Also, I felt so much better once I started to take concrete steps towrd getting clean. Please keep posting. I hope we can help you through this. M.

Hey carol
I just got on here. Thanks for jumping in and taking up for me. I wasnt trying to start trouble. Ive noticed on here though that some people, it doesnt matter what you post, they seem to always have something negative to post back.Thats why i dont post very often cuz it seems that it doesnt take much to start an argument. This is the way i see it, I have an addicton to beat and i dont care what everyone else has to say as far as negativity. Here is my E mail amb30405@aol.com

Kerry I also take the bee pollen capsules but I would recommend pure manuka honey over the pollen any day,if you are interested, just type manuka honey into a google search, you have to make sure it has this special rating for it to work its wonders on you,a lot of rest homes over here are using manuka honey for bed sores,it works well by swallowing it and i have used it on some sores I got from using and it cleared them up really well.
Sunshine, I am on methadone, was on it before for over six years, detoxed off it, was clean for a couple & started using again. After a long period (maybe 8 months) of quitting, relapsing, seeing a shrink, quitting, relapsing, etc, etc, he advised me to get back on methadone. When on it i am able to lead a drug free life. The main downside, as u said is it is difficult to get off. Finally the shrink said to me that getting off is not something i neded to worry about.
Well Sunshine, it was a big decision for me. I decided I would give myself one more solid chance at getting clean & living without it. Well I gave myself one more chance and after relapsing & going thru wds i gave myself a couple more one more chances- i owed that to myself & i really did not want to get back on methadone.
But i also have another prediciment. I need to live life unencumbered by drugs, drug consumption, withdrawels, depression, & I have a great need to function every day as a regular human being. And to be honest I am getting older & the reality of the possiblility of getting arrested for using or possession and the possibility of loosing employment, embarassment, a criminal record , or even jail, scares the hell out of me.
Well a few weeks ago i got back on & i am fairly certain that i have made the right decision for me. The craving & the desire to use is entirely gone. Not only that, but i also know narcotics will no longer work as methadone has a blocking effect. THat being said I would not reccomend anyone getting started on methadone unless it is an almost last resort.
Have you tried drug counseling? Have you gone through a hospitol or even an outpatient detox. Even if these have failed what about suboxone.
Methadone is absolutely a poor first choice, as a matter of fact, it used to be a requirement that u had to have gone thru at least one hospitol detox and started using again. Now u don't even have to be an addict to get on it.
One very imprtant thing if you do decide to get on methadone: Make sure in your heart that you are genuinely trying to lead a drug free life. Do not fool yourself on this. One of the unreported downfalls of methadone is that if you are into it half assed, and not really serious about getting clean, and still hanging out with your drug friends because they are such good friends and you just need them in your life, you could be setting yourself up for disaster. At the clinics you don't have to open ur eyes too wide to see that there are many people there still actively using & part of the drug world. Even though it is a blocker, if you use enough of another opiate u can still get off, only not as good and not as long. That is where, out of left field, many former narcotic users start turning to other drugs that will work, like cocaine/crack. & u now have contacts with all kinds of drug people. I know one guy, years ago, who ended up with a double to tripple habit (Methadone, heroin, cocaine) spiced up with a little bit of valium to come down from the coke. I must say, without trying to sound too harsh, this person was a f..k..n idiot. & when they started detoxing me off of methadone (per my request) and i started going thru the begining of H withdrawels at the same time, it was not pleasant. so if you do take this path, make sure you know what u are doing & do not neglect recovery meetings.
Good luck in your decision

Hey Browndod, sorry to hear you had to go the meth route to be able to live the life you want, but I totally understand and I have come very close a few times recently to getting and staying on the meth program,I seeee it work real good for some people I know, these people are in their 40's and have been addicts for a long long time and methadone has really changed their life around,if you are doing it mate, dont worry, its too late, enjoy the life it will allow you to live. There's no shame in my book of going on the methadone program.,whatever works.
Phantom, thanx for ur wishes & ur wit. If ur there, ur there, I like it. But u r right, primarly it is for hard core who have no other way. I dont see it at all as a good move for say someone on l loratab for a year or 2. I think u need to try every option before u get to the big M. I'm 52, not at all hardcore anymore, but just have a seemingly endless habit, except now, where its at least legal, clean, i get good counseling & there is a control. A lot of people see it as a contradiction: a drug to get off drugs: Being honest with myself, i don't know if that is true or if it is a 'medicine ' to get off drugs. i do know (except for the juice) i am living a drug free life & building a good one, with no continuous overwhelming depression.
