I'm a student in England working on Substance Misuse (part of my own recovery) wandering what is used in the States for heroin substitution. here we have methadone which while it solves some criminality is actually worse than the original drug to get off.

The subsitutes in the USA are Methadone and Buprenorphine. Buprenorphine comes as Subutex, and when combined with Naltrexone, it is known as Suboxone.
Incidentally, Buprenorphine is also used widely in the UK.
