Does anyone else in here have certain music in their collection that just really makes them want to go out and get funked up. maybe it's just the music i listened to a lot when i was in heavy addiction, but there are certain cd's that really make me have urges. my musical triggers are spiritualized, elliott smith, velvet underground and depeche mode.
i guess i should try and just refocus. it's just so strong.
Velvet Underground would give a nun an urge to shoot dope.
Of course certain music brings back memories of the high times. As time goes on ,it becomes easier to deal with.
I still listen to The Dead with a great fondness for all the high times and fun memories of the traveling band of wackos that were part of my life for awhile- but it is just that memories - no urges (maybe because heroin wasnt in my life at the time)
Heroin did contribute to my putting down my guitar (and eventually selling it) so for me- different musical times- different memories. The music I listened to and played during my heavy heroin years was a darker more blue-sy type of sound - and yeah I do think about the past- but no real urge.
best,
jack

HAAAAAAAAA, Jack that was funny......Yeah, that Lou Reed will do it to a nun.
Depache Mode as well.........not Flock Of Seagulls though.
Pretty much the music may give me a urge is anything I listened to while using.
What's that remake of.........Nothing can take you away from me....you keep me coming back for me.....baby you're all that I need when I'm lying here in your arms ---------we're in heaven. The remake sounds like alittle kid is singing it.
Now THAT tune even though I don't know every lyric just gave me an urge to go cop some dope, and freaking get myself the he** out of here.
Baby you're all that I need while I'm lying here in your arms isn't hard to believe we're in heaven. That's IT. The shifty chick used to get my dope for me, and may I ADD gave me beat bags one too many times had a kid, and that kid was such a nice little girl. Sweet, and adorable, and funny, and she kept playing that song. Nice, nice kid. How's that happen? Anyways I think they're all clean in that house now so that's cool.
Yeah, Beet's that'd me my dope loving tune fo shizzle.

Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" always makes me crave a speedball!! I swear!!! Once when I was listening to that song, I could taste coke!! Wierd, huh? I used to listen to Violent Femmes all the time when I was gettin high. I don't really get urges to use when I hear them now, but I do think about the good highs as opposed to the many bad highs and all the SICKNESS!
I forgot! When I was in rehab once, a counsellor told me that if I was serious about maintaining my sobriety that I could never listen to Grateful Dead again. What a crock of sh$%!!!! I told him that too. LOL! He told me that I wouldn't stay sober for a week, even locked in the trunk of his car!! What a jerk!
Shirley-
Funny they tried to tell me that also- When I protested they told me
"well you aint gonna learn what ya dont want to know"
Even funnier-> that line is from - Deep Throated Wind , they para-phrased it without even knowin it.

How true!, Jack, How true!
A chorus of RIPPLE I send to you two ol' deadheads.
Man, that was cold about locking ya in the trunk of the car, Shirley. I never knew Mr. Garcia and the gang were so evil, and influential.
Ya know some rehabs won't ley any music on period. Man, if one I was in didn't have music I would have lost alot of laughs watching people dance.
A detox I was in was interesting. NO MUSIC!!!!!! So, what happens? A trio of old heads from a very Italian part of Philly did all Sinatra tunes, and these MOFO's were excellent. I mean really talented dudes.
The problem arose when the Latino's in the mix didn't want to listen to no Sinatra. Did these dudes stop? NO!!!!!! FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I admit I joined with my rendition of Summer Wind, and Fly Me To The Moon. One little girl even asked these older guys to finish It Was A Very Good Year. She asked "What happens to him in the autumn of his life?" Please finish.
