this is day 16, shouldn't I feel better by now?
Actually its different for everyone.....I know the way you are feeling because I went through it. I did find a homeopathic doctor after exhausting all medical doctors...having every blood test done under the sun to determine why I felt like chit for weeks...easily 8 or more.
The homeopathic doctor while educated on medicinal medicines her fees were outrageous....so I opted out. I realized that what I had done to my body for years was not going to be fixed in days or weeks...
Take a good multi vitamin...drink gallons of water...& pee pee pee...exercise and eat right...you will get better! It just takes time...there is no instant fix...how long did you abuse drugs?
I promise you will get better...look how far you have come! That is amazing and my hat goes off to you for that. Just try keeping that in mind...that you are no longer abusing your body...you are in fact in the healing process.
Hugs to you!

Kee Kee, what did your test show? And what type of blood tests did you ask for?
My test results came back 100% normal in all areas!! Fortunately for me after 5 years of hard percocet and oxcy use....even my liver enzymes were normal. I thought perhaps I was anemic or have low iron levels...nothing notta...and I had a complete blood screen looking for anything abnormal that might account for me feeling lousy.
So my point is...I was very lucky that any damage that I did was and is temporary...we can't expect to feeling good again immediately after stopping. A very big part of this whole thing is very simply put...brain chemistry...that is the way it has been explained to me and I see now its true. You have altered your brain chemistry....good news is....is that it is NOT permanent.
You feel better and I know it feels as though it is lasting forever and you will never feel right again...but you will. How about an antidepressant...short term. Again...I would discuss with a qualified professional...but most of this is in your brain now!

Aren't you on sub, doesn't that make a difference, or are you talking about other times.
Cynical the only way I know to help my adrenal situation is prednisone.
Regarding opiates hurting the adrenal? till this thread never heard of that.
OTC crap is dangerous. I found this out the hard way.
I am totally screwed. I tried in 200-2001 to come off the prednisone to hopefully kickstart my adrenals. I wanted to die really die.
But If i could get in a hospital with a private nurse to my liking and a pump for pain I can get off the steroids. So i will work hard to make millions of $$$ so i can afford a 6 month hospital stint with my private nurse.
Cynical hope this post finds you in good health. Just got home. Work is really good. Just need to get through this cold front.
Today was a bit warmer.
Feel good --Jeff

Yes...I am on sub now...I am talking about the last time that I quit cold turkey. I took my last pill on June 21/06. It was during that period of time that I had all of this work and tests done. Unfortunately I did not feel better until around the beginning of August. However...then I relapsed...why...well not sure but started feeling a little better..had no support and my addict brain started telling me that I could handle just one....well the rest is history.
Before long I was right back up there again within weeks....it wasn't until I moved to Hawaii found an addiction Dr. and a good strong 12 step program and suboxone....my life is very different now...but I am aware of the fact that I will come off the Sub...when...well thats up to my Doctor.
For now I am clean...and I do not live like the pill junkie addict that I am...lol...I hope you find what you need. I did and life is far from perfect but much better.
HI JEFF! Hope your day is going good!

Hey Jeff,
Just wanted to say that the long term narcotic doesnt 'damage" the adrenals as much as can make them very sluggish..
i think it was Soul Picnic that recently did a bit of investigations on line and learned that the medical community isnt into the whole sluggish adrenal factor, its more the Naturopath- homeopath community...which is true.
A regular Dr doesn't normally test you for the things that a Naturopath would...even hormone wise, if you go to your regular Md they do a very simple hormone test but it doesnt break it down to exact hormones the way the Naturopath does...
The test i had is as keeKee pointed out- expensive ( here its covered with extended medical however..so we got reimbursed ) but it breaks it down to every hormone..DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, etc etc...
As well they check all your amino acids, all your vitamin intake, your serotonin levels ( which Med. Drs also dont test you for...they just verbally test you..say your depressed and put you on antidepressants.)..basically a Naturopath will test you for any and everything that your body normally makes to keep your body healthy.. and they compare that to what is the "normal" range.....
The really interesting thing is that when you fill out the medical questionnaire, and sit down, tell them whats going on in your life, how you are feelings etc...the tests come back just like a replica story book of your life...it actually SHOWS if your serotonin is low, if your run down, or if you have any real unbalance that would give cause for concern....
Our bodies are actually the best walking drugstore we could ever come across, and any and everything that we would normally need is within us if we are healthy...we make our own painkillers, our own sleep inducers...our own anti-depressants...it really is pretty amazing when you think about it...
Its unfortunate that there is such a division between regular Drs and Naturopath Drs, and the drugmakers are absolutely against Naturopath, and flex their Pharmaceutical powers from time to time, banning melatonin for as long as they can, 5-HTP etc...eventually it gets put back on the shelf but its a cat and mouse game thats been going on for a long time.
If the natural vitamins and supplements were aloud to list right on the bottles what they can do for the body, why you should take them etc, it would help, but they arent allowed to...its forbidden by "Law"..talk about conspiracy theories...
We cant just assume that everything the Drs tell us to take we should take..we have to be our own health care advocates and know what we are taking, why we are taking it and how it works...when you start really doing that you realize the power the drug companies really have and how closely they work with the medical communities. When you read drug research, or a particular study saying something is "good" or "bad" for us...look to see who is doing the study...who is funding it..cus it can be skewed to look or read a specific way depending on who's behind it....
llh..how you feeling tonight>?
Hugs

The other reason Drs are not picking up on the whole "sluggish adrenals" is that it might be a load of garbage. I am not saying it is - but it might be.
Naturopaths also have a financial incentive to get peope believing in certain diagnoses and taking certain preparations. If they performed controlled trials to provide empirical evidence that what they are saying is true, then maybe more mainstream health professionals would take them seriously.

There was a time i would have agree with you...but when it was explained to me why the adrenals get sluggish , it made sense, and the fact remains that for me and a handful of others here, they felt a lot better during the horrible withdrawals after taking them....
I think that they work for you if your adrenals ARE sluggish, if they arent it wont..others have said and it was true for me that you could tell pretty fast...
So long as its something my body normally makes, and was taken as directed, I figured it was worth trying...heck i would have tried most anything when i was going through the worst of the withdrawals...and after so many years of putting crap in my body, i figured trying something like adrenal support wasnt too out there to try...
Im sure just like GP. Drs, there are good Naturapath Drs and bad ones...some just about money and some not....meeting them the first time should give you an idea of how they are...whether they are passionate about what they do and care, or not....

People used to report feeling more courageous after eating a Lion's Heart too, but that clearly has no merit.
If adrenal fatigue exists and is treatable, why don't any of the Naturopaths do a double-blind randomised control trial to prove it?
I remain highly skeptical

Its not hogwash, its a scientific fact that adrenal glands are exhausted from opiate abuse. I got the idea of using adrenal plus to help bring my adrenal glands back to health by an addiction specialist and had it confirmed by my addiction doctor. It helped me.
The fact that your local doctor doesnt know about this doesnt mean a thing, not many doctors spend much time and effort into helping an addict back to health, that jobs up to us to do our own research and do whats best for ourselves. Everyone has a choice, if you dont believe it, dont take anything for it. No ones forcing this down your throat, its just information that some addicts have come across and are trying to share, take it or leave it.

John Dee,
THANKYOU...my knight in shining armor.lol....thats the 2nd time you came along and helped me with a link..and tonight i am so exhausted I really dont think i could have gone out there and tried to find what i knew WAS out there...statistics...lol
((((((((((((((((( John Dee )))))))))))))))))))))))))))
There will always be skeptics, and i understand that...especially those in the medical field...look at the way poor llh's Dr reacted....
Im hoping in time people and main stream medical personnel will understand the relevance of Naturopathic care...
Your a doll JD
Good night hon...

I actually had success with the adrenal supplements as well.
I did a report on adrenal glands, and it is real. There is actually quite a bit of evidence out there on it if you look. I think that narcotic abuse long term CAN damage your adrenal levels, and I had all of the "symptoms."
I take something called Adrenal Stress End, it is about 25 dollars a bottle.
I took a pre nursing exam a few weeks ago, and the nurse that gave it told us that half of what they taught her in nursing school 20 years ago is the complete opposite today.
Doctors don't know everything, people.
llh, welcome to the board and trust your gut. I have had no adverse side effects from the adrenal supplements. If it helps, then take it. It will, however, take a while for the fatigue to go away. It took me at least a good month to have any motivation at all.

This is an interesting topic and the links are quite interesting, but having read both papers I have to say that they do not show any definitive proof of the "theory" of the researches and certainly do not indicate efficacy of any treatments. In fact the only Randomised Control Trial they refer to produced lousy results
This is not to say that researchers are wrong, but to read these articles and claim them as fact is a little misleading. The underlying pathophysiological analysis is sound though so I am sure evidence will come in time.
In the end you are really only risking money if these treatments don't work, and gaining considerable benefit to Quality of Life if they do.

For those who were helped by using meds to help with adrenal functioning, I am wondering if at some point your body regained normal functioning on its own?
I have read the study in the first link before, and wondered how long the "abstinent addicts" had been abstinent, and when, if ever, functioning would be expected to return to normal on its own.
It's a touchy subject on a recovery site, the idea that the body doesn't or can't heal itself entirely in some areas. It seems to me, though, that the first study was suggesting exactly that. I know that wasn't anyone's point in bringing this up, but it bothers me. I have searched and searched for research that suggests physical damage done by opiate abuse heals entirely at such-and-such a point...and never found any. I'm changing the subject a 'lil, but while I'm at it, does anyone have any info on scientific research about the damage being reversed on its own in the course of healing?
I know that many, many people do recover physically to the extent that they are able to lead completely normal lives, so it must be that physical healing is possible in some capacity, I'm not trying to open a can of worms here...it's just something that bothers me, and something I wish I had more information about.
