Natrexone

Hi
Has anyone here used naltrexone to help with Alcohol dependance and has it worked ? I Do know it blocks opiate receptors so is usefull in opiate dependance but I believe now it has been liecenced to be used for alcoholics because it seems to stem the pleasure one recieves fron drinking alcohol

Hi,
I recently went through detox. I am 45 years old and have drinking since I was 15. I have been in denial forever and finally came to the realization that I am an alcoholic. I am taking Naltrexone since I left detox and I have been sober for a week and two days. I really works. I feel sad sometimes because all of my friends are drinkers and still party but I can't be a part of it at this time since it is to tempting.
You should talk to your Doctor about Naltrexone. I was a daily drinker (or should I say drunk) and this drug has helped alot.

Good Luck and god bless.
hey outof
glad to see your back around, hope all is well for you.

I'm an alcoholic and I've just begun taking naltrexone. Too early to tell if its working but side effects are a real pain! Will persist with it though cause i have to stop. Can anyone else share their experience with naltrexone in this area?
Thanks, Evian
I was on Naltrexone when I first came out of rehab 2 1/2 years ago. I am not sure if it was my Higher Power or the naltrexone, but I didn't want a drink during my first 90 days. Not to say it was easy, and who knows it could even be a placebo effect, but I didn't drink!
I recommend trying it. I didn't try drinking on it, and I wore a bracelet in case of an accident ( in an emergency they would have to use another anesthesia if needed) I only stayed on it the recommended time ---3 months ?.

Good luck.....Don't drink, don't think & go to meetings!
Neon do a medline search on Naltrexone for alcohol, it was first used for alcohol as early as the 60s and only recently has come into the picture for opiates.
I did Nexrexone for a while (three months) and I did stay sober, no cravings. However, the sides were I felt like stretching all the time and was sick to my stomach.

It is also not very liver friendly.
Turns liquer into lemonade
I am on my second prescription of naltrexone. I am now seeking counceling, as unfortunately for me it did not work. That is...I chose to drink the 3rd day on it. It did seem to numb the sensation I get from the 5 to 8 daily drinks I take, however I have not yet stopped. My biggest problem is an insatiable craving that kicks in around 4:00 everyday that I can't seem to beat. I am very afraid.

Mike, have you tried antabuse?
Natrexone was developed for drug addicts but has the happy side affect that it is perfect for alcoholics. It works by blocking the brain receptors meaning that drinking has no effect. Well yes of coarse you still cant drive or use machinery but it has no affect on you so there is no point in drinking. But be warned my brother tried drinking whale on it and lost his licence, but as the Alcohol had no affect he stopped taking it and well you all know how that story ended.
It did work very well up to then
I can sympathize with how you feel. I have a close friend that I've dealt with for several years who had the same problem. He finally found a product that he uses to control his cravings for alcohol, and it's amazing the difference it has made for him. He never drinks unless he chooses to, and then it's still under control. I don't think he ever has any bad side effects, because it's a nutritional product, believe it or not, that has something to do with repairing neurotransmittors in the brain. Anyway, there is a website for it, but I'm not sure of the web address. If you're interested, I could find out and let you know. I'd like to help you.
