My father is in a lot of pain. Yet he cannot find a narcotic that does not make him sick.
He has tried Oxycontin percs Demerol recently Darvon thinking maybe ha just could not control heavy duty opiates.
The Darvon made him awfully ill. Darvon is like asprin. He tyakes advil but now cause his j=kidneys are shot?
He had his freakin knee replaced and basically went with no pain meds. This pain is different.
Does ANYBODY know of other opiates? I googled and they all seem to be meds he has taken?
Has anybody had this experience? ANYBODY??
I cant believe how sick he gets from these pills. Is there a common component in all opiates that maybe he is allergic to?
i dont know.,It kills me to see him in pain when you got 500 freakin pain pills.
Unreal
Jeff,
I'm really sorry to hear that your dad is in so much pain. He's been a real trooper, hasn't he? I don't know what to tell you about a replacement for opiates. As far as I know...there really isn't anything that kills the pain as well. There are many people who are sensitive to opiates....makes them desperately ill. The only thing I can think of that people here have mentioned is something called Neurontin. I don't know anything about it except it's not an opiate and some say it helps control pain exceptionally well. Maybe you could check into it? Hope your dad is able to find some relief.

Jeffrey,
I had the exact same problem and lost 50 lbs from throwing up constantly. The drug that finally helped is promethazine, or brand name Phenergan. It is frequently given in the hospital in conjunction with narcotics to alleviate stomach nausea. It is available in pill form or suppositories and is the only thing that worked for me, I hope it helps your grandfather. God bless him...

Jeff,
Kahti hit it on the head. Phenegan, an anti nausea medicine, I have them in suppositories so as not to upset the tummy. The doctors should know to match heavy duty narcotics with heavy duty antinausea meds. Has he tried that?

Hey Jeff I ONLY have a sec cause I gotta go pick up the girls, but even though I know its STRONG what about a Fentinal patch or even a Lidocaine one?
I realize the Fentinal is really strong but what about a Lidocaone?Or maybe some kind of nerve block.
I feel so sad for your dad as he's been through so much.
Try & take Care

Jeff,
I used the promethazine for nausea caused by Fentanyl patch and Dilaudid, it really helps and it has a calming effect (they even give it to prenant women in labor and before suguries to relax the patient without knocking them out). Please post how your dad makes out, and hang in there...

My mom has the exact same reaction to the same meds - something about how they depress response creates nausea and sometimes vomiting. My mom couldn't get up from a laying postion without throwing up. She has degenerative arthritis and has taken a couple of bad falls because of her bag and knees - she really can't take anything but OTC stuff (though she swears by Bayer Back & Body, probably the caffeine helps). I'm going to have her look into this stuff the others have told you about, maybe next time she can get some relief. So sorry about your poor dad, Jeff. It's so hard to watch your parents suffer.

Actually, asprin works much better for pain relief than most people give it credit. Not tylenol, but good old Bayer
Not that that would come close to touching your Dads pain Jeff. He is WELL beyond that, as we know. I used to take an anti nausea med ..cant remember the name..crap..??) It helped a lot with nausea because that is a major problem for me and when on opiate, it helped.
But the meds exist..ask his doctor..it was scripted specifically for nausea. It wasnt a dramamine type deal..it was different

Hey Jeff,
Another anti-nausea med that could be worth looking into is one called Zofran. It was developed primarily to help cancer patients combat the nasty side effects of chemotherapy but it might be worthwhile to see if it can be used to counteract other types of nausea as well. It is given orally and dissolves on the tongue.

Hey Jeff
How about toradol?? It was used on me for severe back pain & I had great results!!
It was given by injection, but really worked & It is the most powerful non-narcotic I've ever been given.
Hope he's better soon, I will keep your family in my prayers!!

Jeff- the stuff Maria mentioned..I think that is what they gave me. It worked really well.
Maria Thanks so much for your replies. He is on one of those meds. Its amazing to me how different we all are.
He should have a patch or be on Oxycontin/Ms Contin something that is time released.
He used to take Oxycontin when he had his back surgery but he was in such pain and could not get out of bed anyway he tolerated them.
But now he is still able to enjoy a semi normal day so cant afford to be all sick nauseous etc.
I am amazed at my tolerance to opiates compared to my dad who cant seem to take any? Amazing how different our systems are.
Again Thank You Maria for the advice.

You are welcome. I hope that the doctors are able to find something that works for him so that he doesn't have to replace one type of pain with another in order to get the care that he needs.
