I need help understanding Suboxone. My son is 23 years old. This is his second addiction to opiates. His first addiction was 5 years ago. He was then 18 and had just started college and I don't know if it was the stress of college or just simply that he tried Oxycontin and got hooked. Regardless, he had stayed clean for 5 years and was doing great until now. He is again addicted to opiates and to tell you the truth I am not sure which kind exactly. He will not tell me if it's heroin or oxycontin or what. He refuses rehab and he thinks he can clean up by himself by using Suboxone (trust me I don't agree with this). He just started the Suboxone yesterday. He seems fine... that's my concern. Shouldn't he be sick, or something? I know for a fact that he took the Suboxone but my fear is that he is also still taking whatever the other drug is that he's addicted to. Is that possible? From what I read it would be pointless to take a drug while on Suboxone because it will cancel the drug out. Correct? What should I expect as behavior and side effects if he is taking the Suboxone correctly? Thank you so much
I'm new to this site, but surprised no one has responded to you yet. I'm not familiar with Suboxone, but you can look up information on it through this web site. Go to the top of the page and select the ADDICTION MEDICATION tab, then select Heroin & Pain Pills. The first medication listed is BUPRENORPHINE (Buprenex; Butrans; Subutex, Suboxone). There is also a link near the bottom of this section, to another web site with more detailed information.
You didn't mention anything about a doctor, but I believe this is a controlled drug. Assuming your son is under a doctors care, he(she) would have warned him about the side affects.
Hope this was helpful.
