Need Pregnancy Advice....

..and no, I'm not pregnant. But my daughter in law is and she's come down with a horrible cold while visiting us. Because it's Sunday, we can't talk to a pharmacist or dr without going to the ER, which would be silly at this point.

Anyway...if anyone has any advice as to what she can and can't take, would you post it please?

I know that tylenol is safe but what about cold medicines? Right now she drinking lots of tea with honey and taking tylenol, but that's it.

Her symptoms are...coughing, aches, sore throat and congestion.

Appreciated it...

Lisa,

Tell her to take NOTHING until she talks to her OB-GYN in the morning. Seriously I wouldn't take anything OTC when I was pregnant but tylenol. Even then I would only take one 500 mg tablet.

She is so early in her pregnancy the doctor will either want her to ride this out or he will tell her what she is able to take.

I wouldn't take any chances..

Hope she feels better soon. That is horrible to be sick and pregnant.

Thanks Rae...I kinda figured that was the best route but the poor thing is so miserable.

I bought her some vicks vapor rub and some natural cough lozenges but it's not giving her much relief.

We will call the dr first thing in the morning...I was just hoping someone had some magic cure for her..

XXXOOO
I would wait. It's better to be safe. I know some OTC med's are a big NO NO for pregnant women. Especially in the 1st trimester.

Vicks vapor rub and natural cough lozenges couldn't hurt. To bad it didn't work.

I am sure her Ob has a list of things she will be able to take when she calls in the morning.

Good luck.. Hope she feels better soon.

Rae

Ps. How far along is she?
Hey! I talked to a pharmacist in my area. He said talk to your obgyn. I said isn't there some things you should really stay away from. He said stay away from Ibprofen, Aleve, Sudafed, Benedryl, Aspirin..So that about sums it up. The only thing that is probably safe to take is tylenol and even then I would ask to be sure.

Here is a web site that may be helpful for you and her to read.

Congradulations Cowgirl on your new grandbaby-to-be ;o)
I just had a new baby 3 weeks ago, my OB/GYN only recommended that I take Tylenol during my pregnancy. It sounds like she is doing what my Dr. recommended while sick, lots of Tea and fluids, throat lozengers, gargaling with Salt Water and "warm" baths. I hope she is feeling better soon. Take care, Best Wishes
I got a bad cold when i was preggers and took tylenol cold and sinus. doctor said it was fine. i called him while standing in the med section at walmart. lol
Yeah,

I would definitely go with the "home remedies" route on this one. The vicks vapo-rub is a good idea. A bath, a heating pad. Throat lozenges. Showering with a lot of steam. All of that good stuff. And lots of rest.

Half the time the OTC decongestants and stuff aren't worth the hassle anyway.

The most important thing to check in about I think is the tylenol/advil stuff. That tends to make people feel the best when they aren't achey and stuff. But I don't know much about pregnancy and medication (sorry, I only really know about cancer :) )

I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter and I had a sinus infection. I had to ride it out with no anitibiotics. It hurt so bad. She should try the Shower soothers. They are tablets that you stick in the shower and they work so well. I have some and I tried them and they unclogged my nose so great.

I hope she gets better soon.
Lisa,

I was a "difficult" patient and had no qualms about calling my OB at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning if I thought a hangnail was going to harm the baby. That's why I paid him the big bucks -- an OB who thinks he's going to get a full night's sleep is either delusional or retired.

What does your DIL's doctor say?

Hope she feels better soon.

Love,
Gina
My sister in law got a bad cold when she came for Christams and she was pregnant. We called the doctor and he said she could take tylenol cold and sinus. Also what is her insurance? Many companies (mine is independent blue) offers you a 24 hour help line which you can call and talk to a registered nurse. I have used it many times. Also I used this site before it is awesome

Good luck

Just got off the phone with my gyno who is an ob as well...Cara's dr is in Alaska. Anyway, my doc said nada...nothing. Other than what she's already doing, she said it really isn't a good idea for pregnant women to take anything if they can stand it. Cara's tough so she' going to just get through it. I feel so sorry for her though. Being away from home when your sick is awful. I can take care of Kyler though, so that helps. I did get her some of the shower soothers, thanks for that idea Stephanie...she's taking a shower now. Thanks everyone....
My doctor wouldn't let me have anything other than tylenol. It sucked.

Hope she feels better soon.
