I havent been to NA meetings, because of what i heard they're about..To me it just dont seem that they would do me any good, bUT Maybe i've heard some wrong information about them.. Can someone please tell me what they are about.. Be brief if you dont want to get into detail.. and can some one please elaborate what the 12 steps they talk about are about.. Any extra input would be greatly appreciated.. T/Y
To me, the 12 steps are a guide to seeking recovery...They are an outline of which we live by. There is work you must do at each step..
I like AA only because I have heard (I know that I shouldn't assume..lol..) the na where I live is only about war stories..how much you used, how you used, what it tasted like, lol..so that just sets off triggers for me.
I personally think that it is the same disease..
Good luck

Philly:
Most of have tried, ad infinitum, to not use on our own. Some of use could string together a few days, a couple of weeks and sometimes a month or two only to return to using. We needed help. AA/NA is a group of people who live one day at a time not picking up any mind altering substance. We found that the drugs were a mere symptom of a much deeper issue. We had to surrender to the disease of addiction. The 12 steps work for me and countless others. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired then I would check out meetings. Good luck to you.

Philly, congratulations on your first steps towards a better life -- asking questions. The 12 steps can be found all over the web. Check out the Alcoholic Anonymous or NA websites. Forget the last 11, just read the first one and see if it makes any sense to you.
If you decide to go to a meeting, and have questions, check out several meeting places until you find one that you are comfortable with.

I've only been to 2 AA meetings and didn't really care for either one of them, but I'm not giving up.... I know it's all about finding one that you feel comfortable in and I'm going to keep looking until I do.
I want to try NA but my shrink advises against it (he said it's more of a pickup place and people are still trying to score drugs)...... but the thing I don't like about the AA meetings I've gone to is that I don't have a lot in common with these people..... When they talk about drinking and stealing or breaking into homes to support their habits, or living in a tent out West somewhere and calling home just for money, or spending all of their disability checks on alcohol..... Even though I know it is the same disease and I am just as much of an addict as they are, it's just hard for me to relate...... I am a middle-class woman who worked the entire time I was addicted to pain pills, never stole, never lived on the streets...... I know one or more steps in the wrong direction and I could have gotten to that point, but I want to find somewhere where when the members talk, I can say, "I see myself in their shoes", not "Maybe I don't have a problem.... I was never as bad off as they were."
But from what I've read on here, AA or NA is the only real way to stay clean and sober, so I'm going to keep going and keep going..... I suggest you at least give it a shot.
Good luck.

You know my story and it is far from a rock bottom drunk. Look for the similarites not the differences and remember those stories you hear that seem so remote are only mere yets for you. I told you before I went to downtown Los Angeles in a company car, Armani suit, Marc Jacobs bag, Ferragamo shoes, over six figure income ,scoring drugs just like a hopeless junkie. I am no different than a common addict, junkie, drunk...Some people come from Park Place and some from the park bench. I know where you are coming from, the first time I related to someone it was a very famous actor, lol, that's how big my ego was. I thought we had something in common and I was right. We were both junkies.
Take care.
Love,
Rachel

I've heard from SEVERAL people that the AA meetings are much better than the NA meetings. Just thought I'd pass that on to you. Also, look for someone at AA who is in their mid 40's who's been sober for 7 or 8 years. That was recommended to us. Good luck! I'm proud of you for considering this step! I've heard that AA and 12 step program have been instrumental in staying sober. I'm hoping my son comes to realize that.
God bless!
