Hi Ruprect! :) THANK YOU! I can't begin to tell you how HAPPY I was to read your post - thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. And I have to say, everytime I read a story like yours, it gives me hope that not every one who takes Sub for over 20 days goes thru nightmare withdrawals...I really feel for everyone that has had to go thru that - but it seems like it isn't a absolute 'given' like I thought a few weeks ago - THANK YOU!!
It sounds like you really got lucky and bypassed the more extreme physical w/d's....so you went thru anxiety, depression, fatigue but you didn't have the other PAWS (?) to deal with? That is great news! I sure hope that Ed has a similar experience when his time comes.
Can you tell me - when the day came to not take any Sub anymore - was it really hard for you to NOT take 'just one more dose'? And - did you experience any more w/d's than you had already been going thru once your taper got below the 2 mg mark? If you did, when did they start after your last dose? I'm sorry for all the questions but am really interested and hungry for info from people who were able to get off the sub completely!
CONGRATULATIONS - JOB WELL DONE!!!!! How does it feel to be 23 days FREE!!!!?? :)
One more question, (sorry) - what about your cravings once you stopped the sub - that part doesn't seem to be talked a lot about - just the physical stuff. I am really wondering once the sub is out of your system - 3-4 days after your last dose - are you 'HIT' with the cravings the you used to have before you took the sub????? If yes, how did you deal with it? If no, were you surprised and have you been hit with the cravings since? Thanks again!! :) RoyalSecret
hi royal secret,
i hope your husband is doing well.how long has he got left on sub?from what i have learnt from experience and from people on here it seems to be true that the longer you are on subutex the harder it is to get off.thats probably true for all drugs, but with sub i found the mental side more difficult than the physical.once i got under 2mg it got worse.i think the key is,once under 2mg try and get off it as quickly as possible (it took me 5 weeks of 0.4 mg reducing)or you just seem to prolong the mental issues.they were never really serious but were a bit unpleasent.the worst part for me was the anxiety,i seemed to get it the same sort of time every day, about 8-10 hours after taking my sub.some days i would be ok and others i just wanted to climb into bed and stay there.at worst they would be like anxiety attacks, only lasting 1/2 -1 hour a day.the lethargy was another issue when coming off,but if you force yourself to get up and do stuff it helps with the sleep etc.as for the cravings,i struggled a bit once i got down to 0.8mg,luckily i never used and the cravings are getting better.i know what some of my "triggers"are now and try and avoid them if possible,if i can't then i just keep telling myself no!it seems to work!i found stopping ok,i had become fed up with taking it every day.once i stopped i had about a week of feeling a bit s*** but now i feel better every day.if you can keep yourself busy in the day then your sleep gets better quicker.not everyone seems to have the mental issues such as anxiety etc or the physical ones either.my physical ones were very mild in comparison.i am sure your husband will be alright,if he reduces gradually and gives himself a bit of time to settle after each reduction all will be fine.i will keep an eye out for you on here,as brit said before, have a look in the heroin section as there is quite alot of info on there.don't worry about asking to many questions, everyone is helpful on here and it is an important part of my recovery sharing my experience with other people who are going through the same or similar things.
bye for now ruprect.
p.s where are you from,the u.s or u.k?

Hi Ruprect :) Thank's for answering all my questions. I also wanted to ask you how long was your addiction to H and if it was considered a high daily dose. I don't mean to be nosey, I am trying to find out if how long someone is on their DOC and how much they were taking before the sub has anything to do with how bad the w/d's from sub are, and how long they last. Anyone have an opinion on this?
We live in Sonoma County which is about an hour North of San Francisco, CA. Where are you from? :)
Ed is dong really good today. He's been on Subutex for 23 days. He stabilized at 16 mg for 7 days, went down to 12 mg for four days, 8 mg for four days, 6 mg for six days, and today is day two at 4 mg. So far he's really only felt badly on the 2nd day of each taper. He says he felt on edge and had the 'blahs' but then the next day he would feel the same as before the taper.
We are both in a good mood today and are having a fun day. He is talking about going down to 2 mg on Tuesday for four days, then taper down to 1 mg in another four days, then perhaps trying to stop at that point, or do .5 mg for four days, then stop. Whichever way we decide to go, we've decided that Ed will take his last dose of sub by the end of this month - which is just 15 days away! We are very excited and scared silly at the same time! We BOTH remember what those 27 hours were like when he stopped taking the oxycontin to start the sub. :(
When you said it took you five weeks to taper .5 mg - do you mean that once you got to 2 mg you tapered down from that level for five weeks? Or was your whole taper from 8 mg to 0 mg what took five weeks? What mg where you on when you stopped? If you had to do over, what mg would you jump at? As you can tell, we are trying to figure out just how low and how long Ed should taper to.
What's everyone's feeling on the taper issue? What is the best plan - is it worth drawing out the last 1 mg for a long time, so perhaps the w/d's will be less, or does it not matter much, if you can get down to .5 and stop, will the w/d's be the same as if you tapered down to .1/4 mg, 1/8mg, 1/16 mg then everyother day, etc....of course you'd probably have to buy somekind of weigher and chop it up and weigh it to get those tiny amounts. Sorry for the ramble but I really want to find the least painful way off this for Ed. I may post a new thread regarding this question - what do you think? Thanks Ruprect! RoyalSecret

hi royalsecret
i'm glad ed is doing well and you had a fun day.to answer your first question,i used heroin for about 2 years, but this was every now and then at first,so i suppose i was addicted for about 6-8 months (sorry its hard to remember when it all went wrong)the last few months i was smoking anywhere from 1/2 - 1 gram a day depending on how much i could get and what i had to do.i did manage to get down to 2-3 bags a day in the last 2 weeks which really helped.once i got down to 2mg of subutex i reduced 0.4mg a week down to 0.4 mg,i stayed on that for 5 days then stopped.it was relatively painless physically, only mild w/d's but i felt very low for a week or so then started to get better.i went on holiday on the second week and after a couple of days felt fine, getting away was a good idea.i trhink the longer you prolong the tapering the worse the w/d's will be,just my opinion, but everyone i have heard of "hanging"around on lower doses suffers more when getting off,i suppose your body gets used to the dose just like it would a larger dose.once down to 0.4mg i would get off and get it over and done with.i will keep an eye out for you and ed and see how you get on.oh by the way i live in a little village near Gloucester in England (north of Bristol).don't worry about asking me any questions, any way i can help i will.
all the best,ruprect

Hi Ruprect - thank you for answering all my questions and congratulations again!!! :)
Today is Ed's first day at 3 mg, he hopes to go down to 2 mg on Friday. He is feeling good, more energy. We are hoping tomorrow isn't too bad, as he usually feels the tapers on the 2nd day.
I wanted to share another sub success that someone posted to me in another forum today. It is, like Ruprect's, a successful sub taper story, and I for one like to read as many of these as I can find!!!!!

I was on SUB following a 9 year 50 pill a day habit. I was on 2 8mg SUB in the morning 1 at noon and 2 at night for 1 week. After that I started to weene off but SLOWLY..about 1mg a week. I have been off the SUB for about 3 months. I had no withdrawal symptoms...no depression...no cravings. I followed my DR.'s instructions to the letter. But I do think different Dr.'s have different ideas. A friend of mine went to a different Dr. and he kept her on the initial dose for about 3 months and then started to weene her off. She had some withdrawals however.
Hi Royal Secret....I will try to answer your questions. I was taking Hydro.... at least 50 a day. I was in withdrawal when I went to the Dr...probably 13 or 14 hours since my last dose. I was actually on 40 mg of SUB for 1 week. I dropped the 2mg afternoon dose at that time. From then on it was 1mg a week...about 8 months. I was a little tired at first but that stopped after the first week. I also had a headache for 2 days but that also stoppped. I was on 1mg for 1 week, then next step was 0 so I took the plunge!!! That was about 3 months ago. I haven't had any cravings but I do have some SUB just in case. My Dr told me to take it slow, but thats not to say it couldn't be done faster..I don't know. I can just share how I did it. My health insurance paid for the SUB... Let me know if you need to know anything else. With a habit as large as mine was I really don't think I could have gotten off them without the SUB.

Hi. I just re-read this entire post and I want to know what happened to everyone!? There were so many people who were sharing, so many who were about to go below 2 mg a day of sub and then 'poof' - everyone stopped posting! That's like reading a good book, and then finding out the last chapter is missing!
Okay, I'll start. Ed is starting at 2 mg tomorrow. He plans to stop taking sub totally on August 3rd. He got VERY agitated when I showed him how small the size of the pills he will be taking tomorrow...I can tell that this is going to turn into a mindgame for him very quickly. I WISH we had some .4 mg pills - I think that would really help him with his mindset. Anyhoo, that is what's going on with us......your turn....... RoyalSecret

still floating at 6....it is just a head game for me now.
tell ed to remember that the sub takes 90 minutes to get to the full effects...when I tapered before, I felt it, but I waited 90 minutes before I took anymore and it helped.

Yes, we palnned to take as little as possible for no more than 7 days.
So far:
day one -- 5MG (2-2-1)
day 2 & 3 -- 3MGMG (1&1&1)
day 4 -- 2 1/2 MG (1&1&1/2)
Starts tomorrow:
day 5 (1 & 1)
day 6 ( 1/2 & 1/2 )
day 7 (1/2)
Hoping we can step of like this Monday with minimal WD's and nightmare over, physically anyway of course. then the real battle starts, the daily fight with the mind.

Hey Darnell, I didn't know you were on sub. You never mentioned that to me on my thread. Well, thanks for sticking up for me about the meetings. See, my husband is a well known doctor and we live in the boonies! Therefore, everyone knows us in our town and many of the surrounding towns and that is why it is so hard for us to attend meetings as well.. I really don't care what people say about me but I do understand my husband's feelings on this issue. It could really hurt his business, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I haven't started the sub yet, waiting for an appointment and continuing to take 10mg of compounded Lortab a day. Last night i did have to take 1/2 of a 7.5 Lortab because I started going into w/d, was freezing and had that jerky leg thing going on. I just figured that no need in not taking the Lortabs and suffering until I can get on the sub.. Gosh, I hope that I don't have bad w/d from that.. Stay in touch and let me know how you are doing.... and by the way, i don't have medical insurance to pay for the sub, so if anyone can give me an idea of the cost i would appreciate it.
Darnell, i must be blind because i looked at my thread and saw where you and cowgirl were talking about the sub.
Sorry for being a blind idiot!!!!
Sorry for being a blind idiot!!!!
Hi Fla girl.........I was able to get ahold of Sub from a friend, so I was able to circumvent the whole process.
Over a three week period I tapered down my usage from 200MG of Oxycontin down to 40MG.
Then I started on the lowest amount of sub possible ot take away the WD's. It works great.

Hi Little Beach, Darnell, Ruprect, Floridagirl and thanks for sharing! :)
Kerry - you're doing great maintaing at 6 mg. That's what's so great about the sub - it gives you time to get your 'mindgames' straightened out! You should be extremely proud of yourself!
Darnell, how are you and your wife doing? You are doing so great and have been able to keep the sub dose down so low - that's awesome!!
Ruprect - thank you so much for continuing to post and share how you feel a month of sub - CONGRATS again - sounds like you have it all together!!
Hi Floridagirl! I think it's great that you are looking into sub - it's really been a life-saver for my husband and I. We do have insurance but long story short it didn't cover sub unless he went to a detox place. We live in No. Calif and it cost $350.00 initial office visit and that price also includes the sub it takes to get stabilized for first three days. Then the sub itself costs $6.00 a pill for each 8 mg Subutex. You don't want to get the 2 mg sub pills because it costs almost the same as the 8 mg ones! If Ed was going to be taking the sub longer, then he would need to see the doc once every other month and it would cost around $90.00 for each office visit. Just remember, LESS IS MORE with sub and try and stabilize at the lowest possible dose - that is very important and I've read really helps when it comes time to taper and get off the sub. Please let us know how you are doing and good luck!
Ed is doing great. He decided on his own that he wanted to bypass the 2 mg level altogether and yesterday he only took one dose of 1 mg at 6:00 am, then today he took next dose of 1 mg at 8:00 am!. He's exercised on the treadmill both days, AND ate salad for dinner both days. He's gained aboutr 15 lbs this last 30 days that he's been on sub, and plans on losing it before you goes back to work in 6 weeks. Hope everyone's having a great day! Royalsecret

Thanks Royal Secret for your words of encouragment.... I'm not worried about the cost and I will definitly try to make it a short stint as I am only taking 1, 10mg Lortab per day since May. But this is not my first rodeo, more like my third and I just want to get clean and stay clean....forever and ever ... i am sick of relapsing... makes me feel llike a freaking freak..

Hi Floridagirl - how are you doing? Hope you had a great weekend!
Hey Darnell - how are you doing!? I know that you said today or tomorrow you were thinking about stopping the sub - how are you and your wife doing?
Ed is on day three at 1 mg - started feeling the 2mg taper today - but nothing that he's not used to by now - tired, a bit depressed, 'blah', etc.. Plans on staying at 1 mg again tomorrow, then starting .05 for 3-4 days. Take care everyone and please keep sharing! RoyalSecret

Hey 22anddone - where did you go? I just read in another post that you successfully got off sub! CONGRATULATIONS!!! PLEASE POST YOUR W/D EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL HERE! We all would appreciate it so much - from someone who was on it short term and got off - how low did you taper before you stopped, how severe were the w/d's, did the cravings come back, you know all the questions YOU had right before you stopped. I'm so happy for you!!!!! Way to GO! xoxoxo RoyalSecret
Hi Darnell - how you you and your wife doing today? I sent you an email. PLEASE hang in there - you BOTH CAN DO THIS!!!!!! RoyalSecret
