My mom is addicted to alcohol and pain pills. Anything she can get her hands on, she takes, no matter what's "wrong" with her. She takes Advil like they were M&Ms.
I recently went into remission from cancer, and I used to get Loratabs for my headaches I got during chemo. She would take one every once in a while like I didn't notice that any were missing and slowly my medicine was disappearing. As far back as I can remember, she has always taken prescrition drugs and over-the-counter drugs as often as possible.
I just got some 800 mg Ibuprophens for my back and as soon as she saw how big they were, her eyes lit up and she took 4 for "later". The next day she took 3 more supposedly for my cousin who gets migranes. He never got them, and when she got drunk that same night I went in her purse and took the pills back. There were actually 4 left, which shocked me. I hadn't expected anything to be left. A few days later she asked for another because her "boyfriend's neck hurt".
I once sprained my ankle when I was sledding (my foot got stuck in a pothole on the way down) and I got 4 Valums. (however you spell it) I was supposed to take 1/2 of one every time I needed it or something, and she took 2 of them, so I had to rely on Advil and Tylenol as I limped around on crutches for 2 weeks.
My cousin with the migranes got some Loratabs too, but he can't take them because he gets sick from them. His mom threw them away and my mom came over that same day. When my aunt went to the bathroom, my mom went through the trash and found them. This was on a Monday, and that Friday I found the bottle in the car. There was originally 8 pills left, and when I found the bottle, there was only 1 1/2.
I know she is going to kill herself eventually, especially since she mixes alcohol with Zoloft and my prescriptions. Just last night she wanted more, but I told her I lost them because I just cleaned my room. Really I locked them up in a briefcase and hid that in my closet. I hid my cousin's 1 1/2 Loratabs, too, but she probably doesn't even remember that she didn't take them all anyway.
I don't know what to do. I am only 15, and my little brother is only 11. I know my mom needs serious help, but if I tell someone, we'll just end up in foster care or something while she goes to rehab. What kind of life would that be for my brother? He has been through enough already. But this isn't about me and my brother, it's about my mom. Please help me help my mom. I'm at a total loss for what I can do that won't jerk my brother and I away from our already destroyed lives. I've tried talking, but my mom is not a talkative person. She is always right, and the rest of the world is wrong. Period.

I can't imagine how you are handling this by yourself. I feel so bad for you I am not an addict but I am taking care of my Aunt who is and an alchoholic. I know what you are going through. It is very hard and sad. Do you have family close to you that can help. If she doesn't want to change she won't. Please seek some kind of help. This is no life for you and your brother.
