I've never dealt with addiction in my personal life. Ironically I'm a psychiatric nurse and I have helped many patients through addiction
My boyfriend, the love of my life .. Has a drinking problem.
Let me start off by saying he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. He is an incredible man that treats me like a queen.
We have been talking about marriage and he recently asked my father for his blessing.
Now ..
We were together 5 months before I found out about his past ..
He used to be addicted to heroin (smoking) for a year. He got arrested, got clean, and has never relapsed.
Then comes the alcohol. I drink socially. We had gone out several times. He would drink at my softball games 1 or 2 beers and we would go home and everything would be fine. Or, we would go out and he would get belligerent and irrational. Still don't know if it's an addiction or a drinking problem.
Thanksgiving was one of those belligerent nights. The next day he decided he had a problem and would never drink again. I supported him, and have not drank either.
Yesterday, he was out with his friends. He texts me telling me everyone is drinking. I told him that's his choice if he is wants one. Well, he had 3. To me, someone that doesn't have an addiction problem 3 seems okay. However, he came home feeling miserable ... So guilty... Depressed, crying.
I don't know what to do. I love this man with everything inside of me. Does he even have an addiction ? Do I marry him ? What is marriage like to a recovering person?
Sometimes we have nurses attend our open AA meetings to gain insight into alcoholism.
I suggest you attend a few as well.
A few Al-Anon meetings would be an eye-opener too.
Good luck.
