hey i posted this on the heroin board but figured i would post here too. if you can help that would be great.
does anyone know anything about the side effects of prednisone?? i know what it is and everything, but i'm alittle freaked out. my dr put me on it for 10 days and said not to stop taking it. i have to taper down. everytime i take it i feel loopy. and not in a good way. my legs ache horribly and i'm off balance. if anyone knows anything that would be great.

Now I guess it is my turn to help you......Usually it will make you feel like you are bouncing off the walls. What are you taking it for......Allergic reaction or chest....breathing problems.... or inflamation......I am surprised about the taper 10 day low dose usually you don't need to. Just had the little one on for 10 days and just stopped she was fine. More than 10 days or a high dose then yes you must taper. Didn't they give you the dose pack so much easier.....
i'm on it for neck pain, i was in a car accident 3 months ago and totally screwed my neck. i have been in pt for months with no relief. pain pills, muscle relaxers and motrin out the a**. she wanted to try something other than pain pills, since they only mask the pain. besides i would need an OC 80mg not to be in pain. she put me on 10 days taper due to all the other sh*t and is afraid of addiction. i didn't even know they were addicting. anyways, i'm not sure if these are side effects that i'm feeling or if i'm just wigged out. i'm hurting so bad right now, i would kill for a bag.
any info would be great.

HI" raerae no sorry dear i have not heard of that med before" but did u ask your doc or the pharmaciest thats what i do now if my doc gives me or my family a prescription because i get very concerned about any new meds and there side afects" maybe that is a temporary side afect of your meds some pills have wierd side afects call and ask they may be able to put your mind at ease i hope i have helped in some small way anyway please take care of your self. Hello again I know when my daughter was on it she was like that bunny on TV she kept go and going.It also got her depressed,and hungry all the time.I am thankful she wasn't on it that long.I'm sorry thats about all I can remember...hope you feel better soon....Mollyjean
You can't get addicted per say not like in the mind but your body could and that result would not be fun.....like seizures........ Usually what ever your starting dose is you take that for whatever time they want you to then you go down by 10mg everyday until you are left with none.......Use to do this all the time with my son. Be real careful to say away from everyone that is really sick while on them they can lower your resistance.
They can make you hungry too but I don't know about what your feeling taking them I only know a kids point of view.....reactions would be different from kids to adults. Make sure you are drinking enough water and that the doc knows all the herbal stuff your on! Hope I helped some.

You can really get sick if you just stop like we do when we want off these meds. This one is not weaned because of addiction...... it's weaned because of how it works. Follow the orders on how to take it to the "t" okay and you will be fine. It does have alot of side effects, sometimes euphoria, increased appeitite, sometimes people feel on edge, wt gain, etc. This is just the nature of the animal. It is good to stop inflammation. It is fine to take it short term. Just don't mess with the dose, stopping it, etc. unless you talk to your doctor.

Raerae, I took a five day course of prednisone 100mg /day, as a prelude to each of my chemo infusions. As you know, it is a steroid. It is used with chemo patients to bust up tumors to get better coverage with chemo. Initially, it resembled a low-grade speed buzz--very jangled, like way too much coffee, sleeplessness, increased appetite.
I believe that the side effects begin to decrease with continued doses. It certainly did not impact my appetite as much as I continued on my course, but the lack of sleeplessness might have been offset by the fatigue of the chemo.
For long-term high dose patients (a former gf took it for an extended period of time following a bone marrow transplant) there is a bloating that occurs called "moonface." You see this with the weightlifting turkeys in the gym sometimes. At that point, other side effects like hostility and irritability also arise. If you are limited to a 10-day course, you will probably be OK as to these longer-term side effects.

thank you both for responding. i'm having alot of trouble with this stupid med. my bones are aching horribly. i feel like i'm 90yrs old. i can hardly walk up my steps. i can't get a hold of my doctor, but i can't take this anymore. i have only been taking it for 1 day. can't i just stop?? or is it too late? i only took 2 doses yesterday instead of three, because how bad it made me feel. my husband almost took me to the hospital last night, thats how bad it got. could i only take one dose today and be done? o'well i'll try to get ahold of her, i doubt she is even in today.

Sorry you are having so much problems with the meds. I have a few suggestions. Try to page the doc on call at your office, you can also call the emergency room back and try to get advice. I don't know if someone can be allergic to steriods but I guess it is possible.......never heard of the side effects that you are having. Are you taking anything else that could be interferring. That could be it too. I am not sure about just stopping if it was just 10 mgs than yeah but you took more than that yesterday......if worse comes to worse and you can't get any answers, the safest thing to do would be to half yesterday's dose......

Severe nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
Menstrual changes. This includes lots of bleeding, spotting, or bleeding between cycles.

Usually, you only need to worry about not stopping immediately after you have taken a week or more. You need to call your doctor on call for the weekend and see what they will have you do. I have seen a person only take this med. less than a week and have serious side effects from stopping abruptly. I don't know your dose. Sometimes people do have severe joint/bone pain as a side effect. Call your doctor honey. More than likely they will have you stop them or possibly put you on a very light dose. If you experience any shortness of breath, swelling of lip or tongue, rapid heart rate you should go to the ER immediately.. For now they should be able to page someone on call to call you back or call the ER and talk to the doctor there. You need to speak with your doctor. Okay?

I don't know the ends ad outs of prednisone. I do know that my ex-husband was on it for Crohn's disease and his face swelled up real bad-like chimp munk cheeks and he had broke out with acne on his chest real bad from it and it's long term use. However, my 8 month old daughter last month all of a sudden had an allergic reaction to something,peaches we think and she had hives ALL over her body. I drove her to the ER like a mad woman and they gave her prednisone and instantly the hives just deminished, it was unbelievable. The sent her home with a few day supply. I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling good at all. I do know for me anyway and my mom that is a RN we take bextra 20mg for bone aches etc and it seems to work great! It is king of like Vioxx that they recently took off the market but it does help us anyway! Take care and I hope you get better real soon. Rae

thanks for all your replys. i tried calling my doctor, but had no luck. she is a bussiness care doctor and they aren't on call i guess. so i went to the hospital. they said to keep tapering and the side effects should lessen. i just hurt so freaking bad. i can't take it. i ended up using last night. so much for 2 months. every bone hurts. i can't even carry my kids up to their rooms. this sucks!! still in pain and no i'm pissed cause i used. o'well time to stop whinning and move on, day one here i come.

the pain sucks, an being an addict sucks. i don't deal with pain well, and when it gets really bad all's i do is think about heroin. my mind keeps saying, "you want to feel better, and its the only thing that will make you better, just alittle will help. for tonight only, you'll be so much better." well then i can't stop making up reasons why one tonight won't hurt and next thing i know i'm high. well atleast the pain lessened. anyways, i'm just getting pissed again. i need to move on. thanks so much for listening.
