Pregnant And Using

Hi everyone!
i'm newly pregnant and using Vicoden/Darvocets daily and want to stop, but I'm afraid of the withdrawel and telling my husband. What do I do?? I'm scared and I don't want to harm my baby. I need help.
Thanks

I honestly don't know anything about the implications of using narcotics (especially in high doses) during pregnancy, but I can't imagine it would be good. Seems to me that if you love this baby, why would you do anything to put it jepordy? W/d sucks as does telling your husband, been there on both fronts, but who's more important here? You or the innocent life that you carry? Have you seen an OB yet? Tell your dr. Do what's right for your baby and the bonus is, you'll get off of the pills.

Hope this helps...I'm really glad you posted.

Hi
Cowgirl is so right on this one, you must see a Dr don't try detox alone because it could have implication on your health invoving High blood preasure ect...Also if you continue to use then your baby will be born an addict and will have to be weaned (detoxed) from birth. I hope you act sooner rather than later.
Keep us posted people on here will listen and offer you what they can.

If it makes you feel better, they (many sources)told me that vicoden was safe for pregnancy...
I didn't take much at all during preg....Especially in the first trimester...Nothing is really safe, then, or at least it isn't something that you want to chance.
Please talk to your ob...
Welcome and congrats...

You need to contact your doctor. You need to be very honest with him/her and tell her exactly what you take and how much. Sometimes a physician may opt to NOT have you withdrawl because the risks associated with w/d outweigh the benefits. Your baby could be born addicted and have to withdrawl. When I was pregnant my physician did not want me to go to through withdrawl due to the stress it would put on my pregnancy. I took Oxycontin and Vicodin for pain. I don't know how far along you are but the best thing you can do is talk to your obgyn about what you are taking.
Take Care,

I totally appreciate and respect what PM is saying, however, oxycontin is a little different from vicodin. I can understand a Dr. not wanting her to w/d from oxy. It can cause so many complications. Vicodin on the other hand is easier to come off of without the same health risks. So why risk the baby?

When I was pregnant with my first child fourteen years ago (and I'm pretty sure thats where the tylenol #3 abuse came into play, then later I graduated to percocets) my doc prescribed tylenol 3 for headaches and said it would not hurt the baby. But don't take that as gold because at that time, I did not abuse and maybe took two a week, no abuse then, that came a few years later.
So, how much are you taking? Anything that could risk the baby should be discussed with the doctor even if you are abusing.Tell him/her, they work for YOU. Remember that. You have to talk to them, because you don't know what to do and either do any of us in this situation....If your on alot and go off, that could be bad, who knows? Thats why they make the big bucks, now get on the phone or make an appointment and make em earn it sweetie!
God bless and congratulations on your baby

This is definitely something that you need to be honest with your doctor about... whether he/she chooses to have you get off of them or not, you need medical assistance. Going through withdrawals can cause you to lose the baby, but if you stay on the pills, the baby will be born with an addiction. It's something you need professional help with.

Good luck
my girlfriend just had a beautiful baby girl ... she has had back issues and her doctor prescribed vicoden also...small doses though, and only when she was in extreme pain. since vics are pretty weak, it wouldnt effect the baby. but since you are addicted....you maybe taking more than necessary for a problem you have....or maybe you are just taking for the euphoria/high.

definately get to your doctor as soon as possible and be honest. it will be hard, of course...but you must do it for your baby.

best of luck.
Okay I'll simplify:
It depends on:
1. How much you are taking?
2. If YOU have other health risks and or are a high risk prengnancy.
3. Why you are taking. Do you need them?
4. It is possible to wean while taking them.

Yes you can have a healthy baby taking them but there are no guarantees.
Yes it's better not to take them.
Yes you should discuss this whole thing with your obgyn. I am not a doctor and would not want to advise you and then you have problems.
You and your doc are the ones who should decide together what is best for you and the baby.

PM
hey I am new to the board and the only thing I can tell you is that there are some rehab facilities that take expecting moms. I know space is usually limited but it's probably worth looking into. Or find a doctor that can help you be maintenenced on something ( an addiction specialist).
Mpolokoff,
You never said how much vicodin you are taking daily? I will say this much. I was taking lortab/vicodin for over a year when I found out I was pregnant with my now 8 month old daughter!!! The day I fund out I was pregnant I went from taking 20 mg of Hydro to 10 mg's the following week,to 5 mg a day and then I stopped altogether!!!! I also stopped smoking cig's at the same time. Yes it was uncomfortable and yes I had withdrawl symptoms for a good week or two but I ONLY took 500mg of tyleol a night for leg cramps and that is it... I seriously urge you to talk to your Ob. I didn't I did it on my own but I don't know how much you take daily and it could be harder for you. However, if you don't have chronic pain then you must stop. It isn't fair to the baby. The baby will withdrawl when he/she is born if you don't stop now and that is horrible to put your baby through that for your own personal pleasure. I am assuming since you take davocet and vicodin a doctor isn't prescribing you both.. If it were my baby I would stop no if ands or butts about it. Just my opinion........Rae
