Privacy Of Drug Rehab Medical Records

I've recenly learned that our County hospital has an in-patient program that my son would qualify for. However, it is an uphill battle to try to get him to go. He says he is concerned about records from the hospital following him for the rest of his life. Does one have to disclose such treatment when applying for future employment or medical benefits? How much of one's medical information can others have access to?
I'm not sure if his problem really lies with medical privacy or a desire not to go to a residential program, but thought I would try to dispel his worries about that if I can find any information. Does anyone have information about medical record privacy issues? Many thanks!
you can do a search. type in HIPPA. you should find all your answers there.
hope this helps
I believe they follow u. I know mine have with the several doc. I have had. U can try not mentioning any others other than maybe a general practioner. But no one at all if u wish.

Hope u find the answers so he can find the help he needs.

Thinking of u and your son,
Kyra
These kind of things do and will follow you for the rest of your life. It is a voluntary entrance to the "system", but it's usually worth it. Rehabs can be somewhat overrated and have a high re-lapse rate, but it is what it is. People who go usually have opened thier mind to the idea of quitting anyway. They are the ones who know or will find their best method of quitting.
I went to a state rehab and I personally announced to my dr's that I had been there and was an addict...those records cannot be transferred to anyone without your signature...i know because i tried to get my records from another dr to the rehab and had to sign paperwork...also when i went to the ER because i got hurt in rehab, i had to sign paperwork releasing hospital records to the rehab...nothing can be released without a signature, and that includes to insurance companies...

will your son have to use insurance in order to go to rehab? mine was free, as was the outpatient rehab i went to.
Yes I can attest to that. Not only will they not disclose them without your approval, but half the time You actually have to pay for the transferal of records (least in Canada you do) .. so I think you are safe there.
As an RN, I agree that his records would not be released without his authorization. Maybe he is thinking of a more likely scenario...one where he is asked if he has ever been treated for addiction. That may come up on things such as life insurance or employment applications. On those apps (particularly life insurance), he may be asked to sign a release of records. I don't know that prospective employers go that far.

you have HIPPA to protect your privacy. you can find all the information you need on line, best wishes.
