i have a question concerning sub and pain medication.
i have some kidney stones and if they were to act up again how would a person on sub get pain relief???
there is no way i would consider getting pain medication today unless after all other methods of non narcotic pain relief have been exhausted.
i guess i have researched as much as possible about suboxone but there is one area that i am not knowledgeable on.
you know how sub cannot be introduced for a least 24 hours after taking an opiate because otherwise it with put you in withdrawals right?so how does it work on the flip side?
is there a waiting period before a much needed opiate can be given while on sub, do you have to wait 24 hours? cannot it be given immediately? would withdrawals happen the same way?
i know doctors dont know much about sub and i want to be educated in all areas of suboxone use so that my health would not be put in danger.
i have a PAINFUL heel spur now, before i would have begged for vicodin, i havent gone to a podiatrist, i have chosen my chiro who doesnt prescribe medication and i am doing ultrasound etc. before i would use my diabetic neuropathy as an excuse to get vicodin, today i just deal with the pain.
instead of benzo's for anxiety i am doing massage therapy. so i am trying to consider non narcotic ways to deal with these issues. i cant believe i have gone 6 nights with sleep medication, those posts on the dangers of ambien cr scared me. i have slept! the computer makes me drowsy so why take a sleeping pill is how i started to try and get off those too.
with all that being said i am curious as to what about a true need for pain relief???

You have very good questions that could be answered by your Sub doctor. Any time there is a post about ways to take pain medication on this board, a red flag comes up. I think posting to your questions here on the board may give others that are on Sub, ways to stop taking their Sub and start using that do not have ligament pain. I hope that you are following where Im going..... :)
I was told by my Sub doctor to tape my script to the back of my drivers license so that if I do get in danger or have an accident the doctors would know how to treat me. Honestly, your questions sound valid and your doctor is the one who can help you get the answers that you are looking for! Shabee

i was not asking about the use of pain medication at home or for self medicating!
i had asked in a hospital or emergency room situation.....
so that i could be better informed if i was approached by a doctor or nurse who didnt know anything about sub, which most dont.. i wanted to have some insight to protect my recovery as well as relieve excrutiating pain which I HAVE suffered before with a kidney stone and presently i have more stones that could put me in that situation, i think you misunderstood my intent in addressing this question...jewels

Jewels, In an emergency room situation, I honestly do not know how they handle it. Maybe someone else here does.
BUT, for a scheduled procedure where pain management is necessary, they have a formula for switching the Sub. to another form of pain management. I know a couple of Sub. users who have undergone more than one surgery, with the use of much stronger opiates, and came through it just fine, with no pain.
Making sure the ER doctors know that you are Sub. should an emergency occur is vital! That is what Shabee referred to with the info. on your license. Also, make sure your husband/partner is aware that he needs to alert the ER staff should anything come up with you and you are unable to tell them.
Hope you don't really need to use any of this! Be healthy!
The suboxone website has a place where you can print an emergency medical card that tells emergency workers you are on sub. You should have your sub doctor's emergency numbers on it. If the treating doctor doesn't know what it is or what to do, they have a hotline number and website on the back of the card. For an emergency, like a major bone breaking car accident, etc., they use huge amounts of strong IV opiates to override the sub until enough time has passed that it leaves your brain receptors.
For anything that isn't a major emergency, it's like Carol said, they have a way to switch you from sub to something else and back again.

thank you carol and atlas
that is the answer i was looking for. wasnt trying to trigger anybody, i cannot believe the controversey i have endured whenever i share about suboxone.in rehab people thought i was glorifying using??? can you believe that? my sponsor and i are no longer in contact because she thinks i am still using drugs (because i am on sub)and became upset about it when i shared my recovery story that there is no way i could ever of celebrated 6 mos with out the help that this drug provided for me, people say thats all i talk about is sub, sub, sub, i can't help but not talk about it because it feels so good to be free!!!! no more pill counting and obsessing, no more lying to doctors, no more refill day anxieties, is it gonna go thru, why hasnt it gone thru yet. no more popping pills all day, it feels so good and everytime i share that i usually will get negative feedback. thanks for understanding you guys, i have to follow up on these kidney stones and also gall stones that i have, a kidney stone was the worse pain i have ever endured, worse than labor, and my labors were bad! i want to be able to tell a doctor now (before i wouldnt) that i am an addict and try for non narcotic pain relief from now on, but in the case of the kidney stone if that should ever arise again, there is no way a non narcotic medication would even begin to relieve that intensity of that kind of pain!;. jewels

jewels, my aa friends know that I am still on a narcotic...I guess the way I explain it. They tell me that if it helped me get this far, sometimes people need that.
I call them "blockers" so people will understand; they block other opiates.
Sometimes, it is nobody's business. You know in your heart if you are using; so don't let them get you down.

Jewels, I am sorry you're having a hard time with your group. The debate between 12 steppers and Sub users will never end. Maybe they just don't realize what Sub. really is., or maybe they do, and they still don't like it. Eithere way, it's not your problem.
Kerry hit the nail on the head. It is no one's business. When I go to meetings, I don't tell them about Sub. I am not abusing it, and it is not their business that I am on it. If you chose to share, and deal with the fallout, OK. But if you want to get on with the business of the The Steps and Recovery when you go to meetings, quit talking about the Sub. LOL Keep that to yourself, and they won't have any basis to judge you.
:-)
I would absolutely go ahead and tell your dr. about the Sub., if you are concerned about more kidney stones. It has been my experience that most drs. know nothing about Sub. If you go ahead and tell him now, he will have time to educate himself about it, and learn how he might treat your pain, and that of other Sub. patients, should the need arise.
thanks for your input guys

My sub doctor would give AD's to anyone who happened to be frowning. I think the entire "class" was on them. I took an AD for most of my time on sub.
LOL Atlas.
I am on one, too, Jewels. I think they put that on there to cover their butt. Some, actually many, ADs are fine with Sub. but some are not.
