I know why people go on sub....to get clean with no withdrawal symptons. But, I am misunderstanding the concept I guess. My son went into rehab for an oxy addiction. He was snorting 80mg every day or every other day. They admitted him into detox for 3 days. He still functioned, and wasn't asleep during that time, but he did receive shots (of what I don't know). Then he was done. No more medicine of any kind, just an intense rehab regimen. I am guessing the sub is being used because those either can't afford rehab, or can't afford to be away from their lives for an extended amount of time. Is that right? Or I guess I should say, is that why the choice of sub vs inpatient is made?

hi cindy
sub has benefits of being able to be used on an outpatient basis, and has few side effects that require monitoring. Many inpatient detox centres use sub (here anyway). It is also a single drug thyat is easily taken.
Many people find home based treatment sufficient. Detox/rehab inpatient often use a range of meds that have side effects and/or can be abused if given to patients to self-manage.
I would imagine it is really a case of outpatient v inpatient detox, rather than sub v inpatient detox. I am sure people here will describe the reasons they chose inpatient or outpatgient based treatment.

Cindy...If you scroll through the posts here you will find several on the topic of Suboxone. The reason I choose Suboxone was I couldn't take the hard core WD's of quitting CT and needed to be able to function as a parent. Going away to a detox wasn't an option and I was fortunate to find out about suboxone. I was on it for less than 4 weeks and it helped me get clean. There are several examples of people successfully using suboxone as a method of recovery. It worked for me!
GHF...
GHF...
Same for me as GHF, inpatient was last option. Needed to be a parent and employee. Cold Turkey had worked years back with alcohol and other opiates. But oxy's had done a number on me... Sub. gave me the time to get my life back in order with out withdrawls. Gave me time to see the damage I had been doing to myself. Gave me time to get back in a program of recovery which I choose A.A.... In patient can get some one clean but what about when they leave. What is going to keep the addict from using again. Addiction is a disease that in my opinion has to have a plan in place to stay sober or clean... Sub has given me that chance... I could have went to 3 or 4 day inpatient detox. But, I don't know if I would have stayed clean when I got back. I had to become willing to stay clean.

Cindy,
I think just like everyone else said you will find that it depends on circumstances. My husband went on it cause he was chipping. He went ct and couldn't take the pain and starting using again. So his addiction doctor put him on it. He is using it along with an outpatient program.....
I hope that your son is doing well with his treatment.
You remember to take care of yourself as well,
