Questions About Methadone

I have never taken heroin, but I know that they use methadone to treat recovering heroin addicts. My DOC is lortabs. I stopped taking them 3 years ago and started attending a methadone clinic per the advice of my psychiatrist. The reason I am posting here is because it seems like more people here have experience with methadone. I was on methadone for over two years. The first year I went up to 90mg a day. I did well on the program in that I never took anything else, always passed my urine tests, and always took my takehomes properly. The first year was great. I felt like I was getting my life back. I was happier, more active, and just felt more "normal" then I had in years. But of course methadone is soooo expensive. At my clinic it is $12.50 a day. So my husband really wanted me to get off it. I spent the second year slowly coming of it at 2 or 3mg a week. When I got down to 11mg I jumped off it. That was in September. I have been clean since. However, I have noticed some changes in my body since being off methadone and I hope they are temporary. I have heard that it can take up to a year before you start to feel truly normal again. Is this true? Also, I haven't had hardly any energy and haven't been nearly as productive as I was on methadone. It's been 9 months and I am still dealing with some major problems. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this? Does it get better? Please, any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Shelly,
My name is Darin and I am a recovering addict and methadone was apart of my history as well. Everyone's journey/struggle/healing is diffferent but they do share the same trials. For me it took about 6 to 7 months for me to feel full fledged normal. I did as much as I could to help that time go quickly by eating right(organic...the best way to go) and juicing(fresh fruits and veggies...again organic) and exercising. Taking vitamins is a big help as well. The more work you put into it the better results you get! Trust me...it does get ALOT better if you just give time a chance to do its magic. CONGRATULATIONS for taking that jump! All the best to you!

Hey Michelle, I wasn't on methadone for nearly as long, but it did take about a year for me to feel back to normal and start enjoying life, you'll get through it, just hang in there
Are you experiencing deep muscle cramps, almost as if yr. bones hurt?Try Magnesium tablets-but follow the directions.'Done gets down deep into yr. muscles. The mag. will help relieve this. EXERCISE-just walking, like 40 min a day, if possible, will help.Eating right, like Darin sez. I've come off done many times & it's dreadful.Takes nearly a year.Sorry.Try the magnesium, if you feel achy all over. It will probably help.Good luck to ya.
