I know a lot of people confide in god to get them off the drugs.. But do you become one of them brainwashed christians you always see? Sometimes you see people that recover and are more annoying off them then on them.. Or is that people just feeling refreshed and thats how they act out? i never understood that, i was just wondering if that was what happens.. Reply please T/You
Can;'t speak for anyone else here, but after eating pain pills like candy for 8 years and spending thousands of dollars, my brain could use a wash, and who better to do it than God?
Hi Philly,
Some I guess do, but not most, thats not what it's about. A.A. isn't based on religion, it's based on spirtuality. The willingness to believe in something greater than ourselves. A Higher Power, for me thats God, for some it's love, for others it's the meetings themself, for others it's Buddha etc..etc..
"Religion is for people that are afraid of going to hell, Spirituality is for people that have already been there".
Take care....................................God bless.......................................Bob

Great question, Philly! I have a born-again friend who just about drives me nuts: constantly preaching, etc... (she's not an addict but knows I am) . She's even questioned my Catholic upbringing! I've always taken what I needed from the Catholic faith and left the rest; it works for me!
Bob's right about your own personal perception fo a Higher Power. Please don't let the spirituality part of AA/NA prohibit you from seeking help. In every type of recovery group, even this message board, you'll find everyone from atheists to die-hard Christians.
Best of luck with your recovery and keep posting!!!

Hi, Philly
I think that Bob did a great job of explaining it. It's up to the individual what Higher Power they believe in and how boastful they want to be about it. It doesn't just happen to a person without them wanting to be that way.
Sometimes people offer God "deals" to try to get HIm to help them
My concept of God is that He's always with us, ready and willing to help us if we ask Him but never pushing himself on us. I love to share my faith with people who are interested and ask me about it, but would never want to force it "down people's throats." That's not what God wants us to do either. It is the way we live and the way we act that can either turn people towards or away from God.
I had a neat experience happen to me at the public elementary school I worked at. One of the third grade boys told me that he knew my mother. I looked surprised, because my maiden name is different than my married one and I never ran into him when I was out doing errands with my mother, so I was puzzled how he made the connection. I said, "Really? How do you know her?" He said, "You know, your heavenly mother," and pointed upward. It made me feel good that he could tell by my actions that I believed in a heavenly mother because we aren't allowed to talk about our religious beliefs in the public schools.
I definitely wouldn't let the religious aspect of AA/NA keep me away from it. It wouldn't be any more religion oriented than this board.
Take care,
Susan

Thanks everyone for answering.. Yah its not like i'd rather be an addict then a "holy psycho", its moreless i wasnt brought up religiously oriented, and i myself dont plan on converting to that life style..Im not athiest, i believe in something, i just dont know yet what..>>confused<< well thanks everyone, i'll see for myself what i can pilfer from the conversations..
Dear Phillys,I don't go to church I just don't see why I need to go to a certain building to do my praying or thanking but I do belive that there is a higher power that is there for us.I don't belive in religion per say but I do belive in something....mj
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN I LIKE TO REFER TO THEM AS "HOLY ROLLERS". BUT WITH SAYING THAT I AM ALSO A PERSON WHO BELEVIES IN GOD, A CHRISTIAN, A HUMAN, A ADDICT. AND I KNOW WHEN MY FAITH IN GOD WAS STRONG, I WAS STRONG. I INTEND TO HAVE A SPIRITUAL HEALING OUT OF THIS. BUT I'LL NEVER FORGET WHO I AM AND WHO I'VE BEEN. GOD JUST WANTS US TO BE THE BEST WE CAN. NOT PERFECT. AND IF YOU CAN FIND STREGTH ANYWHERE GOOD WHEN TRYING TO STRUGGLE REACH FOR IT. EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS. JUST DON'T FORGET WHO YOU ARE.
HUMAN.
