Has anyone got any information, advice or experience (success?) of Rapid Detox?
The anethesia type of detox?
BF is on 70ml of methadone and wants to detox using the rapid method.
I have been looking at sites on the internet but can only find information from centres which are offereing the treatment and obviosuly they are going to say all the good stuff about it.....i want to know realistically about it
Here are 4 threads to read. Hopefully this will help some.

I personally wouldnt do it. I have been through a methadone withdrawl and believe me it was NO FUN. I wouldn't risk being put under though. If I would have known about sub, I may have done that ( short term). I weaned down to 2 1/2 mgs of methadone before I quit. The withdrawl lasted a good 20-30 days. I am not going to lie, it was really painful. I survived it and I was a mother of 2 children at the time.
Good luck to him. The key to methadone is wean slow. Like 3-5 mgs at a time and stay there for 7-10 days and drop a little more. Have him get as low as he can before he jumps off and make sure he is medically supervised.

I did UROD for Oxycontin
The only thing Rapid about the procedure was how fast my bank account emptied funds.12,000.00
It was a freaking nightmare and I felt like sh*t for almost two weeks afterward. The only thing you avoid is maybe the two days of the worst withdrawl symptoms. It's not worth it and they were not sympathetic when I insisted that I needed to stay an extra day.
I felt like an unwelcome relative after Christmas.

Thanks for the information, I have read the posts .
It's such a big decision, not sure what i feel at the moment, BF wants to do some researching on the internet this weekend to get a better idea of this detox. And ultimatley it's his decision but i want to know the facts about it.
He is desperate to get off the methadone and can't bear the thought of being on it for at least another year, which realistically he would have to be to taper from 70.
One thing i don't really understand is the Naltrexone part.....if this is a non-addictive blocker that stops cravings but doesn't cause W/D's...then why do people use Sub? or am i getting confused here??
the sites i have read say that patients tend to stay on Naltrexone after the treatment but thats it's not addictive and can be stopped at any time without the patient suffering W/D symptoms
Also if methadone W/D's last a long time...ie. weeks does this mean that even after the rapid detox under anethestic you will still feel really bad and suffer from W/D's?

I wouldn't do it...no way. I researched a while back and there are some really dangerous aspects to it. You still feel like hell. From what I understand, they knock you out, and give you naltrexone to kick the opiates out. This, without being under, is very painful.
You still have to go through the w/d part; they just accelerate the process. I haven't done it, though; this is just what I researched. I would spend the money for rehab..mho.
I would suggest for him to possibly switch to sub with a doctors help. People have done it here, and hopefully jw can come along and tell you his story.

I think the problem with switching to Sub is that it will still take him a while to taper his methadone dose low enough to start taking the Sub .....he is on 70 and i think you have to get down to 30 to swap over.
Plus then he is still dependant on Sub....how long would it then take him to taper that down? I still haven't got my head fully around why Sub is so much better than methadone?
I know health is more important, but with work it would be harder to do a longer term rehab.

sashab,
What about going to an inpatient medicated detox??
I just did that myself to get off long term Sub .... and am VERY glad I did!!!!
I did not have to go thru a long taper at home and it was less painful for me. I stayed at detox for a month but could have been out faster but chose the slower route. The place I was at detoxes a lot of people off long term methadone ... usually about 21 days ... but you can choose to stay longer.
What they do is switch the person from methadone, sub or whatever other opiate, onto a short acting liquid opiate given every 4 hours ... the dose is tapered each day and by the time you leave, you are completely off everything. IMO it is MUCH less painful....
Where do you live???
Here is the website link for the place I went to .... you can call them .... the staff is wonderful!!! And if he can't go there specifically, they may be able to refer another place.

Sorry idnt reply b4, i did read your post Swizzle., just never got round to replying.
had a look at the website it looks good...thing is we are in Italy, suppose i could still try to contact them to see if they could reccomond places here.?! But its good to look at the website to see the polices, practices, methods of treatment and ideas etc that they use...in order to get an idea when comparing to places over here.
For now BF is reducing his methadone by 2ml a week as the first opportunity to do any sort of major detox will be April. So that gives him a bit of time to reduce slowly his dose and see how thigns go and to way up all the options he has.
thanks everyone that gave input into this. I am still unsure how i feel about it, i can see both the positives and negatives of it. But it is really interesting and helpful to have other people views and firsthand experiences of detox.
