Hi everyone, I am a poster on the family board but I question regarding health and heroin use. I live with a heroin addict. He says snorts and has never injected although I am not around during these times. My concern is that he has several symptoms (getting him to a doctor is not easy) now. His right ankle, foot and lower leg is swollen. He was hit with a baseball in that area but his former addiction doctor was concerned about heart failure. Than he lost his test results and they never gave him a heart ultrasound. He is also switching back and fourth from methadone to heroin weekly. He also makes odd noises when he first falls asleep. I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of this and what I should tell him. He has been sleeping most of the night (since 6 only to wake to eat a bit and than go back to sleep) He also woke up coughing up flem. I don't know what the heck he is doing or taking today. I have no idea if he has mixed drugs recently. Any clue? Obviously the doctor is the common sense answer but I can't make him go.
Thanks,
J
Jennifer Lee,
I'm sorry you are still going through it......that can be a bunch of stuff.....not saying he has this, but just to let you know......HEP C easy to catch.....people who snort their heroin, and because it's pure now many people do....anyway you know if you share a bill or a straw you can get that?
With his heart it could be that endocarditis or whatever...an infection in the lining of the heart......alot of heroin addicts get that......don't have to be shooting up presently, but if he did you can get that.
That edema needs to be checked.......depending I guess how much dope he's doing.......heroin I mean it's called dope here......we swell up.....I couldn't wear shoes.....ran around in slippers sometimes.....or barefoot......now the sleeping like that I don't get....may be just me, but I didn't sleep.......I was always "enjoying" my high, and thinking how i was gonna get money for my next bag or ten.......he could be doing benzo's.......if he's doing the methadone then benzo's is a good bet........not good Jennifer Lee.......you should NOT have to worry how he's sounding, and if he'll wake up......according to my mom I made the most unGodly noises when I would finally go to sleep.....poor woman would catch me in a nod.......it's an ugly thing......hope he gets help Jennifer

Jen, you do not say how old yr man is, or if he's a little...er, fat? The sleep thing could be sleep apnea,if he is a heavy person, they sometimes have it & make odd sounds. But I am very thin, & my husband sez I make the most ungodly noises w/ my breathing while asleep.I smoke tho.Does yr. man smoke cigarettes? Also it could be simple snoring.Men snore, esp. as they get older. The leg thing sounds a bit weird tho.How long ago was the baseball incident? Any bruising?I would keep an eye on it. If he's getting hit w/ baseballs it sounds as if he is getting a little exercise @ least.Has he tried ice to lower the swelling? If it gets worse, or stays a long time, or starts moving up the leg,GET HIM TO A DOC!! I do not want to panic you or anything but it may be a clot & he could lose his leg...or worse. The flem thing, waking up, eating then going back to sleep sounds like what I used to do when I was eating too much sugar.I am hypoglycemic as a result.Does he eat a lotta sugar? Hypoglycemia has a lotta nutty symptoms one would never associate w/ simply eating too much sugar, but there you go. Let us know how it goes! Good Luck!
