For those of you practicing the 12 step method of recovery i would love to know what step your on and what that actually means? It would also be intresting for the new comer too jaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
step three. to me it means that its my responsibility to do the next right thing and make sure im always focused on today and not stress about the outcome, because the outcome is always in gods hands, to worry or stress about tommorow shows a lack of faith. so do the next right thing and let god handle the outcome. of course this is my first time through the steps and would love to hear from those with more experience as to what it meant to them.
Wolf this will be a great thread if people join in we can learn a lot from other peoples ideas and ways of life. jaxxxxxxxxx
thats a very good point jackie. its not what we know but what we can learn.
Jackie, I am not an NAer ; however, I felt compelled to see what all the Steps` are about I hear people speak of.
Your thread and Bobs prompted me to finally sit down and read the them.
The below URL is a personal dairy of a womans journey documenting each Step.

i know i have said this before, i dont formally "work" the steps but i use and teach them every day to my children as they are bible based weather the program wants to admit it or not , but to me the steps are basic principles ,morals, and overall just the way to live life as a good person, again as i said combine with 10 commandmants and the golden rule. i will prolly get verbaly beaten for this, but these are my thoughts only and how i live and it works well for me and my children

No you wont Terrianne, no reason for anyone to bash anyone. I am reading them now for the first time, and your correct to degree, they are principles that my mother taught us, Or similiar, just worded differently. But I have not read them all yet. Just the basic good stuff that doesn't hurt for people to hear them over and over again, I think including myself, people should read the 10 commandments and the 12 steps and whatever it takes to bring one back to the basics of life. I get so busy at times I fail to stop and read the very thing that brought me to where I am today. The Bible. As rebellious as I was growing up, I always had it sitting on my nightstand table, mother made sure of it.. lol
And it still sits there, to remind me to read it,, if People Magazine isnt sitting on top of it.. lol
If people write in every post about NAAA or Tapering, or whatever method they have used, it is what has worked for them. The key words are 'What has worked for them' . That is why I am reading the steps for the first time to get a good understanding of what those who talk about it, and how the steps worked for them, are talking about.

Terrianne, when my mother died I was lucky to get her bible, very old and she had written in it, in red, and it is the most precious thing I own today. If my house were to burn to the ground, the only thing that I would run after to save, excluding my pets, and husband, oh and my purse.. lol
ok ok I would grab a whole bunch of stuff, but seriously, it would be that Bible that was hers, it is like she is still here when I read the things she has written all through it. Just gives me a sense of calmness. Plus she explains the verses that I don't understand with her writings.

brook,
thats awesome, i inherited my grandpa's bible as well and feel the same way, i also write in my bible as well, my pastor is awesome and simplifies verse. plus when you believe in god for some reason the bible makes so much more sense, i have 4 bibles one for me and each of my kids plus my grandpas. you are so right about reading it how it brings peace and calmness. i dont even go to certain passages allthough psalms 23 is my fave. i just open it up and wherever it lands somehow has something i need to hear (i call it god talking to me.

Funny you said that, I will take the Bible, lay it in my lap, ask GOD to lead me it to where he wants me to be, and you are right, more often than not, I will randomly open it, and BAM it hits me in the face.
Ok I lied I would take my diamond earrings.. lol

Not meaning to turn this into a religous format, and sorry jackie I kinda highjacked your thread.
Terrianne this is one of my favorite verses from the Bible..
I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalms 56:4
I love this.. mere mortals. says it all..

anyway my email addy is naturesprincess@yahoo.com use it and abuse it : )

Where did the steps originate? In AA Comes of Age, (p.39), Bill wrote:
"Early AA got it's ideas of self-examination, acknowledgement of character defects, restitution for harm done, and working with others straight from the Oxford Groups and directly from Sam Shoemaker, their former leader in America, and nowhere else." (1)
Jackie:
The Oxford Group was a religious organization. I am on Step 4 but I do 1, 2, 3 and 10 daily. I am a procrastinator so Step 4 is taking me a long time :-) Ten is very important to me. It is where I start and end my day and look at my part in situations.

rachel,

Good Thread Jax:
Thank you Brook for posting website on 12 steps. This is the 1st time I have read and studied the N/A 12 steps. I thought I may be doing a lot of stuff wrong by just stopping the pills but I live this in my everyday life. I am in no way perfect and I've heard you have to "work the the steps" and I hear it's really hard. I believe those people.
It's so much about our higher power which has always been God for me. I believe in God and I believe in Jesus, in no way am I ahamed to tell anyone and everyone this. When I feel I have done something wrong, I apologize as soon as possible. The step uses the word "amends" My husband was the one I have apologized over and over - he was ready for me to stop saying "I'm sorry" so I did. During my adiction in my 30's I was so mean to him, wanting him to get me pills, too. He says I was not mean - I think he has selective memory.
I know some may think I have simplified this and I promise I don't mean to do that. It's just the 2 meetings I went to - they didn't even mention steps, only talked about alcohol.
This has made me feel better.
I gave everything to God long before I was an addict. I know these are my children, God is just letting me take care of them before they go Home.
We come here with nothing and we leave with nothing. Maybe that's why I'm not materialistic, the old saying "you can't take it with you" and I learned the hard way, we can go at any age. It's not up to us.
Oh, and Ecclesiastes 3, verses 1-8
"A Time for Everything"
This is the one verse that helped me with the loss of my son:
Verse 2- A time to be Born and a Time to Die.
It says it right there in the Bible.
I believe that when we are born, the date of our death is right beside the date of our birth. Who is going to change God's plans? No one.
All 8 verses are soothing to me - I read them when things are bad.
I love all of Ecclesiastes.
Thanks again, Jackie,
Love, Jean
