Karen I so feel for you 'cause I'm in the same boat. If I don't take my nightly pills then I don't sleep. Like you I've been an insomniac for most of my adult life and doctors start out by giving out pills like candy, instead of finding out the root of the problem. There's a reason\ we can't sleep. Usually psycological or physical pain. I've tried to wean myself off and that didn't work. But I have a new doctor who took me off of 40 mg. per day of valiium and changed that to 4 mg. of clonazapam. I don't know what he's going to do about the clonazapam but he'll be weaning me off that soon enough. We do have to help ourselves as much as we can and go through those sleepness nights. Drink coffee during the day ( as opposed to taking uppers) but be sure your last cup of coffee is around 3:00 p.m. You will eventually get so tired you might sleep without pills. It's working a little for me but I still need my nightly pills. I don't know who has the answers to our problem but if anyone out there has some thoughts or opinions they'd be appreciated.
Thanks

I have been taking Ambien nightly for 2 years and have been taking 20mg of it for the past year. I quit cold turkey and it is rough! I still cannot sleep (it's been a week) without taking 1/4 of a xanax..... I just lie there, not sleepy at all, but EXHAUSTED...know what I mean? But everyone I've talked to says that it does get better. Try eating right before bed time (that's supposed to make you sleepy), a hot bath, no caffeine after early afternoon, etc... but for the most part, you just have to wait until your body readjusts. Just know that someone else is in the same boat as you...
Hey all, I'm addicted to sleeping pills too, Zopiclone/Imovane. I take 2 X 7.5mg pills every night and they usually knock me out for about 5 hours. Sometimes they don't even work anymore. They used to kick in in 15mins now can take 2 hours. I smoke P (crystal meth) to get up and sleeping pills to go down. I am more scared to quit them then anything else cause I know if I am going through withdrawl from P I can at least sleep. but I know without the pills i can't sleep for more then like 2 hours and that is only if I am exhausted. My Dr brings up the idea of taking me off them sometimes and I'm just like "nooooo, not yet" Really I mean"Noooooooooooooooooo, Not Ever!!!" I don't think tapering would really work cause 15mgs only just works for me now so give me less and it prob wouldnt work at all! Hope you find some answers

You need to replace addicting sleeping pillls with non addicting sleeping pills such as trazodone.Trazodone is an anti depressant whic acts as a sleeping pill. You start at 50 mg and increase very gradually to as high as 300 mg.
This is what most any psychiatrist in the USA would advise.
Good luck,
Lucia

It took 20-25mg of Ambien for me to fall asleep, but now I know that a lot of this is in my head. For the past week, I've been taking xanax for sleep and last night I took 1/16th of a 1mg bar and was able to sleep for 4 hours. 20mg ambien only let me sleep 5 hours at the end (though the sleep WAS better).
I would advise against quitting everything all at once like I did (the pills and the ambien).... You're right, if you quit cold turkey and go through withdrawals, hopefully you can sleep through a majority of the pain.... then, once you're off the other stuff, then I'd start decreasing my sleep meds until I was off of it all!

Lucia,
Can you tell me if Immovane is the same as Ambien? The stories on this board about ambien are so akin to my own experineces with Immovane and just wanted some clarity on whether we are talking about the same meds or not. Your help is much appreciated.

Sleeping tablets, like anti-anxiety med's all belong to a group of drugs known as benzodiazapine's. They are *highly* addictive and people who do not know this are often on these drugs for years and years and/or they simply keep increasing their dosage.
Go along to http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/benzo/join
You can read all about every possible brand name anti-anxiety of sleeping med and their are carefully worked out tables as to how you can gradually wean yourself off your sleeping tablets.
There is a fully comprehensive, free book which you can download if you wish. This is a free service, offered by a Professor Heather Ashton who studied the whole sorry tale of people who become addicted to benzodiazapine class drugs and how they can gradually taper off their particular drugs.
Best of luck to everyone.
