My son just called from college and said he is trying quit smoking pot after four plus years of smoking daily. He has been off it for five days and has been unable to sleep and if he does it is only for about an hour and he wakes up in a total sweat. He is on his way to emerg now. I don't know what he should expect or the process and how long this will take to get this out of his system.
HI
Pot can take up to 90 days to get out of you system. I can only give you my experience and it may not be the same for your son. I smoked every day for 10 years. I found quitting very hard. I ended up in a psychiatric ward for a few days to detox because I got very suicidal. This is not the same for everyone so please don't get too worried. Just be aware and make sure he is coping ok. I was told it was because the gland that releases endorphins had stopped working due to my constant use of marijuana. It took me about 3 - 4 weeks before i started feeling better. I cannot speak for your son but I could not have stayed sober if it wasn't for going to N.A. Meetings and working a program. You should advise him to go to a meeting and speak to others who have quit. It was a wonderful thing for me to listen to others who understand what i was and still am going through. I wish you and your son the best of luck. Im not gona say life is always great in recovery but it sure beats smoking weed everyday.

Thank you John, I hope he will start to feel better once he can start to get some sleep. It worries me that he will go back to smoking if he is unable to sleep. I do know at this time he has the desire to quit now the he is talking to us about this.
How long should my son expect to have trouble sleeping and having the sweats at night? Is there something he can take or does he need to fight through this part of the process?
Are you certain that weed is the only thing on the table? He may have a more generalized anxiety or panic disorder that smoking helped to quell. Has he been evaluated for other drugs or for other issues?
The best thing he can do to keep the sleeplessness at bay is to work out hard and regualrly, but not at night...take OMEGA-3 fish oil capsules, and maybe some L-tryptophan and passion flower at night...all safe, all OTC.

I was given Librium by doctors for a few days and it seemed to work for me. Just make sure you keep his stress levels down for a while. Take school or work off the table for a couple of weeks and maybe look up a drug councillor or a recovering addict or alcoholic he can talk to. As I said before I got huge comfort from people who have been through this themselves. It will pass and if he can stay clean and sober his life will improve greatly. I can only give my experience but I was sure there was something much more serious wrong with me. I was sure I suffered from depression or I was just insane but it all passed and I'm doin great now. The only thing wrong with me is I'm an addict which is fine as long as I go to meetings and work a program. Your a good father and your son is lucky to have a father that loves him and is concerned for his well being.
Thank for your replies, a site like this is provides great information and feedback. We are making his commitment our priority and look forward to working through our challenges.

Hi Jack,
I was a heavy weed smoker. I smoked every single day for more than 25 years. When I decided to quit, I too had difficulty sleeping; was cold and hot at night, felt miserable for several days, had really weird dreams, etc. But, eventually all gets good.
Your son will probably have some difficulties sleeping for a little while. According to my own experience, I had to make myself a priority. That is, i took real good care of myself. I went to bed early, I went outside for fresh air, I drank alot of water and took vitainmes especially omega-3 which helps to relieve depression when one stops smoking pot.
This site helped me alot also. There are also other sites for pot addicts that were really good for me. Your son has to want it, he has to be determined that he doesn't want to smoke weed anymore if he wants to stay on this drugfree journey. He is lucky to have you.
