Stopping Methadone

I have been taking methadone for the past 5 years. Started in prison and carried on. Imam now on 20mls. Have a family and am totally settled. My drug worker suggested changing over to Subutex. Any suggestions. I am also prescribed Valium and am Hep C positive, but have not started treatment as I am a full time father to 2 young children. Many thanks
Hi Danny,
It sounds like you are doing quite well on the 20+ mgs you are taking of methadone. If that has kept you clean why the interest in switching to subutex/suboxone? Do you have take-homes ?

To be honest I have never been on either of those, just methadone, so I am certainly not in a position to direct you. You may want to go to the suboxone board here, but as in anything take some of what is said there and do some research for yourself before doing any kind of changes. If it's working, why change it?

There are advocates of methadone, those whose life it changed for the better and there are those who hate it, for whatever reason and refuse to take it again after a bad experience with it. I am sure you will find those who like or dislike suboxone on the Suboxone board as well.

Again, ask lots of questions, find out what's involved in changing over and then make an educated decision. Of course if you do change and you aren't happy with it make sure you can go back to your clinic and MMT if you want to or need to before you use. I am guessing your clinic offers both?

Good luck and let us know how you are doing!!

Thanks for the reply. My drug worker suggested changing over. I am on weekly pick up and he seems to think being on Subutex would make me feel better both physically and psychologically. I will go on to the Subutex site. Many thanks
Danny,
I read a bit about it too and it is addicting as well. Some say they get addicted to it and take more than they are supposed to. Whether you feel the high or not I don't know, but if so look out.
Good luck to you.
