Strange Detox Schedule My Dr. Has Me On.

I actually already posed this but I posted in the wrong category & was informed I should post this in the pain pill category. Here here is what my confusion is
I went to my Dr, & asked him to help me get off a 5 year habit of percocet. I was taking 10-12 a day, maybe even more because I never counted what I took. I just took them. My Dr. ,(another one, who is a pain specialist), prescribed them for me years ago for spondylosis, arthritis in my back. As time went on I was taking more & more. I decided to quit on my own & see if I could endure the pain. I couldn't. It was just agonizing.
The new Dr. I went to started me on oxycontin 30 mg every 12 hrs & 4 -5 perks a day. He wants me to wean from the percocet with using the oxycontin so my body will get used to taking less pills a day. (a psychological thing). Then when I am down to taking no percs a day he wants to wean me off the oxycontin with comfort meds. He says it will take several months.
I like the oxycontin but I am concerned as it's even s stronger opiate than what I have been taking. I'm kind of afraid this will make my withdrawal worse. He says oxycontin is a stronger drug than percs but it's less addictive.
Also, I have tried CT & I was like the guy that, jewlsanders, mentioned from the pain pill boards, I was in absolute agony. No exaggeration! I went to Narconon about 2 years ago. They give you nothing to help you withdraw. Not even aspirin. I begged & pleaded just give me a ibuprofen, aspirin, anything to no avail. They are very nice people though. The anxiety was probably the worst. But the pain was there too.
Anyway, when I went to my last visit, the same visit as when I went & asked for withdraw meds to just get this nightmare over, anyway, at this same time I told him I was kinda confused about adding a stronger narcotic than I had been taking, plus giving me the same med also, with, our whole goal is to detox me from the percocet. He said this is the best plan because I would get used to taking less percocet & that would help with the "psychological thought effect of popping pills all day, he feels the oxycontin is actually very less addictive even though, yes its a stronger narcotic, but less addictive because you don't have them as often Ater I weaned down from the perks then we can start weaning me from the oxycontin then we will start getting oxycontin the weaned down from then start on the detox meds.
I am a bit concerned because I am so afraid it will make my withdrawal worse. I.ve only tried ct before & I am so terrified of it.
Does anyone here have any feedback or opinion?

Any feedback from any of you that know about this kind of detox schedule?

OD states-"He says oxycontin is a stronger drug than percs but it's less addictive."

LOL...........that's just total BS.

It's going to be tough no matter what you do.I hate to see you get an OC habit. It's a b*tch to come off of.It was my nightmare.
It's certainly easy to see why we have so many addicts running around.Doctors are clueless about addiction.
My suggestion would be to quit listening to them and take your power back.
I cold turkeyed off Oxycontin and I was doing a lot more mgs. than that.
Maybe some others can offer a better taper plan?
Yer dr's an idiot.

I would find another pain management specialist, tell them from the get go that you want off of the meds and hopefully they'll have a better plan.

Oxy's are powerful and very hard to detox from. You would do better to come off of the short acting meds like percocet. If you want to do this on your own )which I don't suggest, find another dr), stop the oxy and start a taper with the percocet, taking one less every day. No matter what, you are going to have withdrawals. No getting around it if you want to be pill free. But you won't die from them.

Good Luck

Actually, the plan is not a bad idea if you can stick to it. The active ingredient in percocet is the same active ingredient in oxycontin. It's called oxycodone. The difference is percocet contains APAP (Tylenol) and oxycontin does not, AND, most importantly oxycontin is time released over a period of 12 hours and percocet is NOT. Percocet is short acting and lasts about 4-6 hours.

If you took six 5mg percocet over the course of 12 hours, it would be the same as taking one 30mg oxycontin. I can see the doctor's logic, that it's better to take one pill every 12 hours, than to take 6 pills within 12 hours. I cannot possibly see how one could be less addictive than the other, since they essentially are the same drug.

I see where the doctor is coming from, and think it's a good idea, IF....and this is a very BIG IF.....you can stick to the plan exactly. Absolutely DO NOT take the oxycontin in any way unless you swallow it whole. Do not chew it up, do not break it in half. It is time released, meaning your body will gradually absorb the drug over a period of 12 hours. So it is essential that you swallow this pill whole or this plan is completely useless.

IMO, oxy is a stronger drug, but it is relative to how many percs you are taking. The milligrams are what matters, that and the time frame they are taken in, they are both oxycodone.

Some people can stick to a taper plan, others cannot. This is a good plan, in theory, but it all depends on you following it to the letter, no exceptions. If you don't, you are not progressing. Give it a try and see how it goes. But a word of caution....If you screw up and take more than you are supposed to, or do not follow the direction exactly, you should find a new plan ASAP. Perhaps check into a detox facility or possibly look into suboxone, IF that happens. I'm not saying it will, just that some people, including myself, are not able to taper successfully and have no choice but to find another way.

Best of luck to you. welcome and keep posting. You'll find lots of support here.
