I was reading in another post someone(jewls i think)asked about AD's being combined with sub.I wanted to share what happened to me,and though im having bouts of depression and probably need the AD,and the Dr has aasked me several times if i want it,i have refused while on the sub.
One time while i was clean(CT) i was having a bad day.I was having cravings and i felt i was headed for a relpase.My son(who was/is on sub) said mom,why dont you just take a small piece of my sub,it will get you through the day,and tomorrow you will feel much better.I was taking wellbutrin at the time,had been for like 3 months,becasue the depression gets sooooooooooooo bad while wd CT.Anyway,i was afraid to,but i was seriously on the verge of relapse,i figured i had taken sub for 3 days in detox before so why not take a little to take the edge off,So i took a small piece,maybe 1 mg size.
Within half an hour i was sicker than i had ever been in my whole life.add all the times ive ever been sick,put them together,add in full WD's doubled,and thats how sick i was.My brain felt like it was going to explode,i was sweating profusely and dry heaving for about 24 hours.My husband thought i was going to die,i cant explain how bad it was.And i knew,without a doubt,it was becasue i was taking the wellbutrin,i had no problem taking the sub in detox for 3 days,but i did after taking wellbutrin for 3 months and then taking a small piece of sub.
I intend to go back on the AD as soon as i am off the sub.I would never take the AD now while on the sub.I know many do and have no problems,but i know im one that has a huge huge problem with it,ifor some reason my brain just went nuts that day with the two meds.Of course i had taken the sub when it wasnt prescribed to me,so...i paid the price dearly!!!!! Just wanted to let you know,with some,the combo is near fatal in my opinion.~KI M

I take an AD and Mood stabilizer along with my sub and am very thankful that i haven't had any side effects or problem. Although my ad is effexor, not wellbutrin. Wellbutrin made me feel a little weird, well... a lot weird.
I'm sorry that happened to you Kim. I didn't have a choice in the matter, i absoleutly had to be put on and anti-depressant. Have you ever considered switching. My sub doctor know all what I take and never said they would interact in a bad way.

Im glad its worked out for you.Im telling you,it was so bad,that i will make sure the sub is 100% out of my system before i try any AD again,i dont care if im suicidal.It was that bad. Ive taken Wellbutrin many years ago and agin when i was clean last year and it worked wonders for me.I just cant take it with the sub.
My sub dr would prescribe it right now,and has asked me several times,(i just say no,i dont want to take it right now,i have never told him my reaction that time,becasue....i took the sub when it wasnt presribed"to me" and i shouldnt have taken it!....funny....im worried about that but i could order hundreds of pain pills online and eat them like tic tacs and not have any problem about right and wrong)yes,he would give me something else if i asked,i jjust wont even try anything while im on the sub,i wont take that chance ever again.There just must be something in me that cant handle the two together?So...thankfully the depression i have(small bouts) arent too bad,i can handle them,for now.~KIM

I have no idea whether this has been the case with anyone else, but i found that once my tolerance went down, the time of the month made a big difference in how a narcotic made me feel..
There were many times i would get extremely nauseous for no apparent reason, and having taken the same amount i had prior to that day... the only reason i ever came up with was that hormonal changes , specifically just before my period, when progesterone was at its highest levels, was when I would get really nauseous...
That was my experience with nausea anyway...

im just chiming in here to give my experience with the combo of sub and wellbutrin in case readers get spooked by your unfortunate experience....
first of all, let me say that im so glad you are better! NOTHING and i mean NOTHING is worse than that feeling of withdrawals i swear..... im such a wimp i cant handle the heebie jeebies at all! ha ha...
but, ive been an on again, off again sub "patient" and have used wellbutrin for the entire time on sub.
i have not had any problems with the combo of the two meds at all. im wondering if its true that even that little bit of sub(1mg) was too much for your stomach to handle.... you know? we all know how insanely strong the drug is!!
other than that being too much "narc" as the other response said, was there anything in your system at all that could have been "lingering" that triggered your withdrawals?
you know the horror stories of taking the sub too soon after taking opiates, etc, and how it will throw the person into withdrawals to get the opiates out of the system....
either way, im happy you are ok now! im really interested to see if anyone else out there has had similar experiences with the combo of the WB and sub...

Hi Marilyn,no,the sub was not the problem,and i wasnt taking anything else at all but the wellbutrin,thats how i knew that was the problem.Im on sub and can handle it alright.Its just the combo of the two for me that did something to my brain.And i just couldnt handle it!

Weird reaction, especially since you have taken sub before and after with no problems. Almost sounds like you were tripped into precipated wd, which couldn't be possible as you weren't using opiates right before.
I do know people as well who were clean and took sub for the same reason ( tiny amounts ) and got very sick, powerful drug this is. I never could figure out why, neither could they and no one was asking the doctors who probably could give an answer.....
Gotta wonder if an AD was around or not....

If you were off all opiates including sub for a while and took 1mg of sub, you would get sick as a dog, even without being on an ad.
Thats why Ive always said that someone thats not used to opiates took sub they would get sick. Theres been a lot of people on other boards that have taken sub that they had leftover from their detox and after having been off opiates for awhile have gotten sick. Your tolerance goes down quick and sub is strong.

It was the fact that the word narc was in quotations...i guess..lol..i don't know..i didnt THINK it offended anyone... but i wasn't sure and thought just in case it was politically incorrect, I better apologize...

hi i was the one that started the thread about sub and anti depressants... i read somewhere where it said do not take sub with an ad. that got me worried so thats why i asked the question. but it looks like most of you had no problems except kim. thanks for your input. jewels
