Can anyone give me a little brief on subitex. Side effects, feelings, withdrawel etc. My partner is apparently going on them rather than using meth but I am kind of concerned they arent going to be much different to meth??
Much better than methadone, fewer side effects.
Subutex (buprenorphine) has a ceiling effect so taking more does not give you increased effect or euphoria. It is much kinder than methadone which is often described as "liquid handcuffs."
Sub is part opiate agonist and part antagonist, so it satisfies the opiate receptors (prevents withdrawal) and blocks any other opiates taken.
Much easier to withdraw off than methadone.

Thanks for that. I feel allot better knowing that. You make it sound easy but is it still very hard for a heroin addict whilst using subitex to stay clean? It basically sounds like a miracle to me but I am sure it aint.
There is no miracle cure.
If someone is on the right Sub dose it should remove the desire to use heroin, but the person needs to be highly motivated to stay clean.
There are withdrawals coming off Sub, if the person has been on it for a while, but these can be managed.

Thanks again. I also have found out that subitex helps you through the withdrawels etc but doesnt take away the temptation as it makes you feel normal but not HIGH like heroin!
He has done it before so I truly believe he can do it again. In the past he has done it cold turkey and also used meth another time. He has allot more in his life now so hopefully that will give him something to fight for. He swears he wants to overcome this and says he hates himself for what he has done and what he has put me and his daughter through.
He has only been on the heroin for 2 month but also using df118's and other opiate based drugs and isnt a heavy user although he needs it little and often to get through the day. How long do you think he will need to be on subitex? or is it hard to say?

Short term detox sounds like a better option for him, due to the amount and time of his use.
but it soo depends on him, i cant say for definate what is best for the individual but i done short and long term, an if he really wants rid of opiates then short term is good idea, about two or three weeks then off it all. the wd/s wont b too harsh either, just a little sleep deprivation but u can get pills for that.
good luck

Thanks Tinman. He is going to suggest going into rehab to his drugs councilor on Thursday but there arent too many where I live and apparently its a few months waiting list. I think if we got to wait we have to do it, we have come this far eh? Fingers crossed. Would take alot of strain of myself too. I know that sounds selfish but I kind of need a break from all this too. Its turned my life upside down within te space of a few month. Fingers crossed for him anyway .
I have a question which I would like to also ask? Can anti-depresants be taken with subitex?
I got clean on subbies. I maintained on 16mgs for nine months then when I felt ready I did a slow reduction over another 9 months. The withdrawals when I finally came off them were pretty unpleasant, but I'd had 18months heroin free to sort myself out before I had to face them.
And, yes, you can take anti-depressants with them. I was taking a high dose of mirtazapine plus I was on 300mgs of seroquel, which is an anti psychotic.
hope that helps

Thanks. He only been on the gear for 3 month so hopefully he wont be on them that long but he definately needs the anti depresants. When he has tried to come off it before he gets seriously depressed and doesnt want to live. He is also very aggresive and nasty and blames me for everything even though I have been more than helpfull to him and always stuck by him even thought his family have washed thier hands of him. Is this normal. Well done on you sorting yourself out. Must of been so hard but I am sure its all worth it in the end eh? Is there any other emotions when "coming off"? I am so scared. His appointment has finally arrived. Only another 14 hours or so. Apparently they will not prescribe anything there and then. They will either see him again or make him see his doctor? How long does it normally take to get the subitex and also how long is normal waiting time to rehab? xx
hey diff, can you share with me your taper schedule the last nine months, and more importantly what wd effects you had and for how long?
And what you found to help with the WD. ie exercise if so what kind, diet, if you will please.
thanks.
howdy SP long time no see. are you back or just passing by? I will shoot you an email very soon, have some questions for you if you do not mind.

Over here i think it is called suboxone, yeah i think it has its place in treatment, but short term is best term, use it to jump off the gear, take it for maybe two weeks then switch to naltrexone strictly orally only, it wont be a pleasant experience but it is deffinatelly do able, i did it cold, but watched some of my friends use the sub to jump out and it worked very well, thing with bup or sub or whatever you wanna call it is that it is a substutute only, thats why it is best on a short term basis, coming off two weeks of sub is a hell of a lot easier than coming off a long term junk addiction....i sat go for it , just dont go the long term
Hi Brook, my taper schedule was pretty uncomplicated. I dropped 2mgs every month, but only at a time when I felt ready. It wasn't a race, and if I didn't feel up to dropping, I postponed it till I was. It was plain sailing until I got down to about 4mgs, then I started to feel the drops much more. I got the 0.4mg tablets then, and would just drop by 0.4, as and when I felt up to it. When I got to the low doses, below 2mgs, I started doing a split dose, taking half the amount every 12hrs instead of every 24. When I got down to 0.8mgs a day, I would leave my morning dose later and later, till eventually I was making 24hrs on 0.4mgs. I stayed on that for about a week or so, but seemed to feel a bit clucky all the time. I decided then that I would have to bite the bullet, coz dragging it out any longer was merely prolonging the pain. So I quit altogether.
Keeping busy was the best thing for me. I went out for long drives in the country with a few friends to keep me amused. I had mates (non using mates of course) over at night, and we'd stay up talking and watching films, instead of attempting to sleep. Expect a couple of weeks of sleepless nights, and then you'll start grabbing a few hours. It takes a few months for sleep to return to normal.
I didn't tell anybody that I was going through withdrawals. I figured "mind over matter" and tried to be as normal as poss, rather than treating myself as though I was sick.
And I'm perhaps not the best person to speak to about diet during a subs taper, coz I more or less quit eating altogether during my subs taper. I moved into a new flat a month into my taper, and stayed there six months and never used the cooker once. I lived entirely off cereal and yoghurt! I know its only anecdotal, but I know lots of women who suffered from anorexia during their subs taper. I think the two might be related. Conversely I know some men who piled on loads of weight during their detox.
I'm always about if you got any questions. If you look me up under the suboxone forum, and look at thread called "Beginning of the end" you'll see my sort of online diary of my subs withdrawal from 4mgs downwards.
good luck
