Just curious if anyone knows if doctors in canada are prescribing sub. I have been searching around the web a bit and have found nothing in Canada except methadone. Wondering if going across the Boarder may be an option for me as I'm only 45 min. away and whether it would then be on the qt and I wouldn't have to notify my insurance if I coul just pay out of pocket? Anyone know of any good addictionologist in Niagara falls, N.Y. or Buffalo?
Physician locator
This is for the US. Click on New York and some sub doctors will come up. I am pretty sure that sub is not used in Canada. I don't see why you couldn't just pay cash and not have your insurance company know about it. It is kinda expensive though. Good luck and God Bless.

No doctors in Canada prescribe sub.........but you can cross the border if you are close enough. I know that Mickey from the board, her boyfriend did that.
Good Luck to you......Stormy put the locator up and that should help you.....

Hi. You must be very close to us. My boyfriend went to Niagara Falls to get the Sub prescribed as it is not available in Canada at all yet. We are also about 45 mins to an hour from the Niagara Falls border.
He went to a Dr. Paul Ignasius (I'm not sure of the spelling there). I will try to find his name and number and post later with that if you want.
He paid for the visit which cost $100.00 U.S. up front and then paid for the prescription at a pharmacy which was close to his office. The prescription was for 30 days (8 mg per day) and cost about $150/$160 U.S. I think.
The doctor was OK. He was quick to get an appointment with.
My boyfriend was a little disappointed that he just seemed to want to get him out of his office and pretty much gave him the prescription with no questions asked and didn't really guide him much on what to take and stuff. We did a lot of research on the heroin board and with people who already had taken it to find out that stuff ourselves. He did recommend counselling on top and said it was preferable that you did that as well, but didn't enforce it.
So really, not the greatest doctor, but my boyfriend at the time only cared about getting the prescription and was able to figure out on his own how to take it, etc. We printed and researched a LOT of information on it beforehand so we pretty much knew what to expect, etc.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
I'll try to get the correct name and number, but there is a Suboxone website that lists the physicians. I think someone on here has the link for it. I just tried to find it and couldn't. You might want to try another one that is in the area that we didn't try. They might be a better doctor that gives more guidance.
Post soon,
Mickey

Boy, that surprises me. I always thought Canada was more up on things like drug treatment then the US. I guess it's the same all over.
Canada always seems to be more behind on passing medications to be prescribed. That's what I have found anyway.
We don't even have Exedrin Migraine here. I have to cross the border to get it. It seems to be the only thing that actually helps my headaches.

Very true about the regulations of new meds. It's a long approval process. Mickey is correct, you cannot get Excedrin Migraine here. But you can get lots of Tylenol #1 o/c at any pharmacy. that is my DOC because it's legal and I don't have to keep going to the doctor so noone has to know. If I wasn't so ashamed of being addicted I would try to lobby our government to pull it and make it prescription only. Maybe when I get clean I will feel differently. It's bad news for anyone with an addiction like ours.
Boy does this bring back some memories. I'm from Buffalo, lived in NF up till several years ago. When I was in Alabama, after detoxing myself to about 10-15 mgs of methadone & leaving the clinic (with about 100mgs saved) tryin to down like 2 a day & suddenly down to 0 & pretty sick, I was desparate to get anything mild (like # 3's etc) to get thru it. I couldn't get anything but dilaudid, which I didn't want, so I had a friend from Buffalo go to Canada to get some # 1's OTC & it was just during a time when they stopped giving them for a while for some reason. Canada was my last hope, so I ended up in the emergency room.
Mickey thank you for the name and address. I'm going to get a phone card later and call from a phone booth. I'll keep you posted and let you know if i go or not.
Hi Betternow:
I just copied a post I made before about my boyfriend's use of Sub. He is now 3 months, 1 week and 2 days clean from heroin and morphine (his DOC). He did still suffer withdrawals from the Sub but he stopped at too high of a dose which he knew to not suffer from them. He was just sick of having to take something to feel normal and wanted to quit and get it over with. If he had tapered more, he would have had less withdrawals. He did say though that the withdrawals were still definitely not as bad as they were when he tried to come off the heroin and morphine. He would only last a couple of days at most before he used again when he tried to go cold turkey from that.
"My boyfriend has been clean and sober for 2 months, 1 week and 6 days after 10 years. He went through many failed attempts to go cold turkey (I am not including his time on Sub in his clean time).
He used the Sub for 3 weeks to help him over the hump of withdrawals, especially since he couldn't take time off of work at the time. I happened to notice that maybe a lot of people who are going through cold turkey withdrawals don't seem to be working. He did suffer some withdrawals when he stopped the Sub, but they were definitely more manageable than withdrawals from his DOC (in his opinion). He believes that he wouldn't have been able to do this without the Sub. When he started the Sub, he was of the opinion that he wanted to be off of it within a month because he didn't want to be substituting for another drug. He didn't believe he would be clean until he was done the Sub.
He followed through and stuck with his plan and I am extremely proud of him."
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please just ask!
Good luck and take care!
