Hi everyone, It took me 52 years to find heroin. I averaged 8 bags a day. After a year of ruining every family function and making my poor wife and kids observe my self-destruction, i decided its high time to clean house. 2 weeks ago I confessed to my loving wife of 23 years and Thank God she is sticking by me. With her support we are fighting this DEMON. We went to a private dr and he put me on suboxone. Heres where i need your help. I took my first dose before i was in withdrawl and payed the price with 18 hrs of pure hell, followed by 3 days of sever flu-like symptoms not to mention a bad case of the hee-bee-gee-bees.Today is my 5th day of detox and i am confused. I know the worst is over but i feel very anxious. I want to go cold-turkey and end this nightmare once and for all.I want to flush the suboxone down the toilet. Why be dependent on one opiod to another? I am reading all these horror stories of suboxone withdrawl. Why allow myself to get hooked on this stuff? Can i go cold-turkey? Should i go coldturkey? What can i expect if i just stop taking everything? Will i be able to function? I want my LIFE back. Please help me. I welcome any advise i can get.
Sincerely,
Distressed Daddy
Hey Dad , welcome to the board .I am a little confused .Are you still on the sub or have stopped taking that as well ? Rob
Hey Rob, Thanks for the reply.Still on subs as the dr ordered (24 mgs a day)Seriously considering coldturkey. I think i can do it. This seems like a cake-walk, compared to the first 3 days. We'll see. Your support is much appreciated. I dont feel so alone. Thanks again Larry
Hi there
Welcome. My thought would be to rely on the doctor's advise although you may want a second opinion. I haven't gone the path you did but remembering the WD from morphine was pretty bad.
I suppoe the best thing to remember is that shall pass and than you can focus on recovery. Congratulations for showing the courage to get to this point. It sounds like your Wife is one great person and that in itself is something to be grateful.
God bless.

Hi Larry . The purpose of Sub is to ease the withdrawals .If taken properly , it can do just that .Most of the nightmare stories you read about are people who have been on it for a long period of time and tapered too quickly .As you found out , if you use your drug of choice while on sub , you will regret it .
Sub seems to be most effective if taken for a short period of time , by that I mean about three weeks or less . Tapering down to less than 1 mg .You have been on it for such a short period of time I don't know what would happen if you just stopped now . I will say 24 mgs. is alot .My guess is without tapering from such a high dose that you will probably shake rattle and roll again .
Whatever you decide to do , I would stay in close contact with my DR. Rob

Hey Daddy,
Theheroin board would be very helpful if you haven't tried it. One thing I've seen over there is relapse with people who come off a good sized habit (like 8 bags a day) and don't stick with the subs long enough. It's not something that will og away in a week. You'll struggle longer then that, even if the most acute withdrawals stop. Stick with what your Dr. says. Give yourself the very best chance of sticking this the 1st try. 24 mg is alot from what I've read, discuss your concerns with your Dr. Best of luck to you. Know it only gets worse with every try. Hang in there whatever route you take. We're always here to talk. Beck

Welcome Dad,
Congradulations on being clean. I am not familiar with your DOC, however, I was on Oxycontin for years. I am currently on Suboxene. I have been on Suboxene for over 3 months. This has given me a chance to get a good support system. A counselor, sponser and I go to AA meetings and Alanon. I have tried many times to stop meds, but found myself unable to stay clean. I also have medical issues. My Dr. has been working with me, I was up to 20mg a day of Suboxene and I am almost at 8mg now. I do know that 20mg of Sub a day would be alot to come off of. However, since I am also tapering I had the same question as you. Do I do a quick taper, or make it slower with less side effects. For now, the slower is better, at 2mg every 2 weeks, I have had very minimal side effects. I see my Dr. on Monday re: possibly a quicker taper. I would like to be off of Suboxene by the end of January. I would like to have another child, and do not want to have that in my system. I wish I could answer your question. I would seek a Dr.'s advice. Suboxene does help with cravings and w/d symptoms. So it's a catch 22. Well I am off to a meeting. After the holidays, weather and kids all home, I need to get some reinforcement lololol. Take care, Best Wishes

I think a support system is helpful to anyone going through trying to quit thier drug of choice....my own drug of choice is alcohol but I have been on pain pills since June 2005 and trying to go cold turkey today...try getting in contact with an NA group and continue to work with your Dr. weaning yourself off whatever it is he has you on to help manage the withdrawals.....good luck! Peace
hi larry,if your already on sub at 24mlg you might as well just follow doctors orders and start a slow taper, ive never done the sub thing but that sounds like alot to ct from...............vinny.
I don't have any experience with Sub, but my pain management doctor told me, that you take sub when you are already in withdrawl. He said if you take the sub before going into withdrawl, it makes the withdrawl symptoms 100x worse.
I hope this may help you some. I agree with the other posts, only your doctor has the answer.
Congratulations and good luck. I myself. have been hydro free since Oct 4, and I feel alive again.

Dear Daddy,
B Wishes had some good avice, I was on sub for two months, before that I was on 25-30 10/500 Lortabs a day. The key is staying on the sub long enough to get your doc out of your body, get support and feel strong enough to go off the sub. You dont have to rush going off the sub. My dr says that some people with very needy personalities can stay on the sub forever, but most people use it as a tool to get clean. For me 2 months was long enough, when I tapered off the sub my wds werent as bad as ct I know that because I have tried both ways. I have now been clean for 3 1/2 months. Sub takes those cravings aways and gives you the chance to start over......All the Best....Shel

suboxone and wondering whether to take it would i guess depend on how much of your DOC you were doing first....certainly someone on a 5 a day oxy habit shouldnt atake sub? Then its almost like arguing about seats on the titanic...it doesnt matter...your going down....your gonna be sick sometime, gonna go through detox....might as well do it now and be done with it...thats my opinion anyway....you should go read the long thread on a couple who went on sub, and how at the end, it as just a transfer of addiction....
