I havent written to anyone since Monday. The last person that i talked to was mollyjean, and i was telling her that i had started my period and had horrible cramps. I got off the computer and went to bed with the motrins(i had been taking them like candy). My fiancee and i woke up on Tuesday morning at about 4:00am. and i was in the bathroom throwing up and had real bad cramping. The bleeding was getting horrible, it was all over the place. I thought that maybe i had the flu on top of a bad period. At about 2:30pm. I was doubled over in pain. I couldnt move. My fiancee put me in the car and took me to the E.R., When i got there, they put me in an ambulance and took me to the main hospital. I found out that my appendix(sorry spelled wrong) needed to come out that night.!!! After they took me to surgery, and i was in my room, i woke up to find out that they also removed my ovarie.!! I had a cyst(sorry spelled wrong) that had in so many words"blown up". They let me come home yesterday. I told the Dr. that i couldnt take vicadin because of the probloms that i have already had and i explained to him about tappering off of them.
The Dr. had me on pain meds. in the hospital and told me that i could go home on what i was already takeing because that seemed to be working since the surgery. My fiancee filled the script and i asked him thismorning what it was that i have been taking and he told me it was something called PERKICET(sorry spelled wrong). I have horrible headaches after about 2 hours of being on it. And i am scared to death of what this drug is.I have herd people talking about it and i need info please!!!

Hi Christina - I hope you are doing better and I am glad the doctor was able to take care of you. I missed your posts.
Percocet is acetiminophen and oxycodone. It is a opiate based narcotic. It is addictive. It should be used for break-through pain and not longer than a few weeks. If you skip a dose, don't double up.
Take care of yourself :)

Christina,
Eddie is right. I too had horrible headaches after taking it at first as well. I think in my case it was directly related to that drug plus the anesthesia, which takes awhile to clear your body, because after a couple of days it stopped doing that. It might be the Oxycodone as well. You might want to discuss it with your doctor and see if there is something else you can take. I'm not sure how bad the pain is but it will get better with each day and eventually you won't need a narcotic.
I hope you start feeling better real soon and am glad you are alright.
Adonai,

ahh, PM, your the best. Im so glad you just wrote and told me that the headaches are normal.!! I was starting to think that my whole body was gonna need surgery. Is there anyother "side affect" that you know of with this stuff?? I just want to know what im in for.
And to answer the question...YES.. god yes, i need something for this pain. They wernt gonna let me come home because they wanted to keep me on the I.V. pain meds. But i told them that i missed my kids and i would sleep better at home and i thought that i would be able to handle it. They slowly took me off I.V. meds and put me on this pill . Once they saw that i could handle it they let me go home.

Christina,
Percocet
Pronounced: PERK-o-set
Generic ingredients: Acetaminophen Oxycodone hydrochloride
Other brand names: Endocet, Roxicet, Tylox
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Percocet, a narcotic analgesic, is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It contains two drugs--acetaminophen and oxycodone. Acetaminophen is used to reduce both pain and fever. Oxycodone, a narcotic analgesic, is used for its calming effect and for pain.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Percocet contains a narcotic and, even if taken only in prescribed amounts, can cause physical and psychological dependence when taken for a long time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How should you take this medication?
Percocet may be taken with meals or with milk.
--If you miss a dose...
If you take Percocet on a regular schedule, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.
--Storage instructions...
Store at room temperature.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What side effects may occur?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Percocet.
More common side effects may include:
Dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, sedation, vomiting
You may be able to alleviate some of these side effects by lying down.
Less common or rare side effects may include:
Constipation, depressed feeling, exaggerated feeling of well-being, itchy skin, skin rash, slowed breathing (at higher doses)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why should this drug not be prescribed?
You should not use Percocet if you are sensitive to either acetaminophen or oxycodone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special warnings about this medication
You should take Percocet cautiously and according to your doctor's instructions, as you would take any medication containing a narcotic. If you have ever had a problem with alcohol addiction, make sure your doctor is aware of it.
If you have experienced a head injury, consult your doctor before taking Percocet. The effects of Percocet may be stronger for people with head injuries, and using it may delay recovery.
If you have stomach problems, such as an ulcer, check with your doctor before taking Percocet. Percocet may hide the symptoms of stomach problems, making them difficult to diagnose and treat.
If you have ever had liver, kidney, thyroid gland, or Addison's disease (a disease of the adrenal glands), difficulty urinating, or an enlarged prostate, consult your doctor before taking Percocet.
Elderly people or those in a weakened condition should take Percocet cautiously.
This drug may impair your ability to drive a car or operate potentially dangerous machinery. Do not participate in any activities that require full alertness if you are unsure about the drug's effect on you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible food and drug interactions
when taking this medication
Alcohol may increase the sedative effects of Percocet. You should not take Percocet with alcohol.
If Percocet is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Percocet with the following:
Antispasmodic drugs such as Cogentin, Bentyl, and Donnatal
Major tranquilizers such as Thorazine and Mellaril
Other narcotic painkillers such as Darvon and Demerol
Sedatives such as phenobarbital and Seconal
Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special information
if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
It is not known whether Percocet can injure a developing baby or affect a woman's reproductive capacity. Using any medication that contains a narcotic during pregnancy may cause physical addiction for your newborn baby. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. As with other narcotic painkillers, taking Percocet shortly before delivery (especially at higher dosages) may cause some degree of impaired breathing in the mother and newborn. It is not known whether Percocet appears in breast milk, possibly harming a nursing infant. If you are breastfeeding use Percocet only under a doctor's directions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recommended dosage
ADULTS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The usual dose is 1 tablet every 6 hours. Doctors sometimes prescribe a higher dose if necessary. The maximum daily dose recommended for each strength is as follows:
7.5 strength: 8 tablets
10 strength: 6 tablets
CHILDREN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The safety and effectiveness of Percocet have not been established in children.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overdosage
A severe overdose of Percocet can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical help immediately.
Symptoms of Percocet overdose may include:
Bluish skin, eyes or skin with yellow tone, cold and clammy skin, decreased or irregular breathing (ceasing in severe overdose), extreme sleepiness progressing to stupor or coma, heart attack, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, nausea, slow heartbeat, sweating, vague bodily discomfort, vomiting

Hey Christina - Are you taking any other medications such as an MAOI? This could be causing a problem. Being light headed and and dizzy are known side effects but I don't think a typical headache is. A mild stomach discomfort may occur, but nothing horrible. I am concerned by your doctor's statement of man-made pain. Is he/she trying to say that the pain is in your head.
Maybe after your surgery pain, go back to ibuprofen for pain. It will help your headache but mess with your stomach a bit more. If you take percocet and have a previous addiction problem, that may be causing these other symptoms, but I'm not going to take that leap.

Christina,
Are you taking it with milk or anything to eat???? It does cause constipation as well. They do interact with some other drugs. How bad is the surgery pain? I had surgery a little over a week ago and this is what they gave me. I did have horrid headaches but mine went away after a couple of days. You might want to have your doctor give you something else.

That was amazing!!! I dont realy know what to say exept THANK YOU!!!
The comment from the Dr. about "man made pain". He didnt suggest that it was in my head, he said it because all the pain im having now is because of the surgery. I hurt in different places from before the surgery. For example-- The right side od my stomic was were the pain was before they went in and cut me. Now its all on the left. The cuts that they made in me are all on the left. All the muscles that they cut, are all on the left. they went in threw 3 different places. The most of the pain is in the bellybutton. I have 12 stitches inside and out. So to sit and to get up and to turn over is a big problom for me. I can lift up my left leg very well because there is another opening in the side of me on the left(kind of by the hip bone) and the third is down lowwer by the , well, lets just say "girl parts"(or closser to them than any were eles).
So YES, the pain is horrible and i wish i could say that i truly didnt need anything but i do. And i do have a problom with pain killers!! Mine of choice is Vic's and thats the reason i told him that i didnt want anymore of them. They tried to give me one the 1st night after the surgery was over and my fiancee advised them not to. As for me , i have been out of it for almost 5 days. I needed someone to talk for me.
With the Vic's, i was clear headed, and with this stuff, i feel like im outside looking in the window and not realy listening when people are talking and having conversations with me.
I hate this. Does god hate me or something??/

Christina,
It is in your head honey .... you have a headache!!! A for real headache! The thing I was trying to say is that when you have a major surgery like that it takes awhile for the anesthesia to clear out of your body. So it's like a toxic body filled with drugs that you aren't use too.
The Percot can make you a bit fuzzy headed and that's fairly normal but you are also clearing out the drugs from the surgery. This takes awhile.
As for all the other areas that ache ..... of course they do, they opened your belly up. They had to use retractors to do it and move things all around. Bound to have new aches and pains. It will get better. Just hang in there.
Give it some time. Eventually you won't need the pain meds. The other option is to take the Vicodin but have someone hang onto them. Then when you don't hurt so much switch over to a non-narcotic. This might be an option.
Take care and be patient ...... takes a little time to heal!

Hey Christina - There is not much of a difference between vicodin and percocet. Their respective active ingredients are very similar chemically (hydrocodone and oxycodone). Both vics and percs have acetiminophen (tylenol). Percocet, percodan, and oxycontin all have the exact same acitve chemical ingredient (oxycodone). Vicodin, vicuprofen, lortab, lorcet all have hydrocodone.
From an chemical absorption standpoint, the oxy's are absorbed better by the body. Oxycontin is the purest form of the percocet (just the active). That's why it is used and there is not hydrocontin.
Focus on getting better. It's a mental masturbation to thing vics and percs are "very" different. Both are opiates. The pain from the stiches and all the other surgery pain will go away in a few days and then try to get off the percs.
Before Browndog asks me to "dumb it down", I am a pharmacist and sometimes ya have to get a bit technical to understand what's happenin' and how the body treats the drug.
Take care and try not to think about this surgery pain.
What's up with your neighbor that got busted by the cops?

I have been hearing from everyone that it will take time to heal. And i DO beleave that very same thing. It just realy sucks right now and im fadding in to this dipression mode. I dont mean to but, i startt o cry and get upset and then im tired and want to sleep. I keep thinking that im just gonna pop out of it any second and then i have to remember what they did to me in that operating room and thats the reason why i feel the way i do.!
I do thank you for taking the time to talk to me about all this stuff. It seems like there is nobody sometimes. But then when i hit reality, there are alot of people that care and im just pushing them away. I would love to blame this on the surgery and the pain meds. But to be honest with myself, im not sure it is. The Dr. said that emotions come with the territory. That is the best statement i have herd come out of any Dr. mouth in along time. I just hope that by me telling them that i have a problom with pain meds. didnt in some way screw me in the end. If Vic's would be better for me than this stuff then, maybe i should change what im taking. It just seems to be to strong on my mind. It makes me think stupid things and emotions come running out like crazy. Sorry, i had to get that out. You seem to be the only one out there tonight.

Eddie, thanks for writing back. I am always saying thanks but never giving anyone to say thank you about.!! Anyway, what you said makes alot of poits. I think that you know what your talking about. At least it sounds that way to me. Im just hung up on the whole WHY ME issue.!! Im gonna be the first person to say I need to stop that.!!

I guess that would make me a Saturday night loser...
Maybe the best thing is to leave the board so you don't think about medicine so much? I feel bad for getting into the med discussion so deep!
Don't obsess on switching meds. Give it 5-7 days from surgery and the acute pain will go away. If that doesn't work, slap your neighbor in the head again.....I never heard if she was released from jail and what happened between you two. I know I laughed my butt off the way you told the story. I also know it was not a good situation for you.

O.K Eddie, i must congradulate you, you have been the first person in almost 5 days to make me smile!!!
As for the neighbor, I havent realy talked to her much. The story dosnt realy go anywhere from there. She came home, i know that and her husban talkes to my fiancee every once in awhile, but we pritty much keep it quite around here now because of the KICK in the head reason.!! But thanks for remembering.
Your friend, Christina.
P.S. Since you know about this stuff, is Vicodin maybe something alittle less stronger for me right now?? Would that be something that i should talk to the Dr. about??

Hey Friend,
I was just thinking it might not give you that headache. I also experienced that but I don't with Vicodin. I hope ya feel better. I had a little time in there when I feel sort of pitiful as well. Emotional, pissy, sleepy, depressed. I promise it gets better. Just not right now. <smile> My advise is sleep as much as you can! lol Then you don't have to think about it all. You need a pile of movies.
Hang in there!!!

Ok, Chris -
I'm gonna give you the other side of the medicine story. I mentioned that the drugs were chemically similar (percs and vics), but there are subtle differences. Your headache and stomach pains are probably real. The percocet does not really cause headaches (I'll get back to the headaches in a sec). For instance, the tylenol in percocet would be enough to relieve a typcial headache alone. It sounds like you really want the vicoden and if that makes your headache and stomach ache go away, mission accomplished. That's your call though. Honestly, you may be searching for affirmation to get the "drug of your choice"? I'm not judgemental. do what you think is best for you but listen to the facts first. Most docs feel compelled to meet your request for a script if you drop them money for an appointment (that's another discussion for another day). Unless you have a secondary infection or something like that from the surgery, it just has to run its course.
The pain from the surgery (where the stiches are) is the acute pain and is why the medicine is prescribed. I'm not sure when your surgery was but if it was within one or two days, the anesthesia will cause headaches and stomach aches because peristalsis stops in your belly and the anesthetic chemicals give you a headache. This goes away in 24 - 36 hours though. You mentioned that the doctor let you out early...that's why they like to keep you for a bit, to give you IV fluids. It flushes the chemicals out.
Take it easy, have some jello...and slap your neighbor (couldn't pass it up) :)
