In a letter to Bill Wilson in 1961, Dr. Carl Jung responded that Rowland H. had a spiritual experience and told Ebby T. about it, who in turn shared the spiritual concept with him (Bill) and that Rowland's endless craving "for alcohol was the equivalent, on a low level, of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: The union with God.... It seems many alcoholics, in looking for that 'softer, easier way' for the "Map of Life," chose Spirits over Spirit.
