The addict in my life has changed, but her past is still haunting her -- she has felonies on her record & is having a hard time finding even a dumpy trailer park to accept her because of this.
Can anyone relate?
What is she supposed to do? I can't believe even a dumpy trailer park won't accept her.
Are there state or federal agencies to help people who are trying to stay on their feet??? I can understand why they say "screw it" and go back to the street & use when society treats them this way.
I can so relate to her situation. I just got out of prison a couple of months ago. I did a 3 year term and now I'm on parole. My PO helps me out with finding a place to live and work.
Does she have a PO(parole officer)? How about a counceller(sp) Life coach? Family to live with?
It's hard to live a new and clean life after it's been screwed up with past fines, bad credit and a criminal history.
I can't get loans for a car, school or a house. I have to pay big money just to get a cell phone with a contract. Job hunting is hard, I'm still trying to find one. I'm also trying to get disability for my bi-polar and hep-C and even with getting a disability check is hard to do with a shady past.
Tell her good luck ( not that I mean in a bad way)

L.C i can totally relate with yer problem but i live in Ireland now but my conviction was in the U.K......One yer.possesion with intent etc. after doin a yr. of my 18month deal....i was paroled but luckily in Ireland and the U.K its a case of time served and thats it unless yer doin some serious badness. As Travis said get yer P.O more invoveled or some other group.Personally i think the criminal justice system in the U.S is at best diabiolical.....at worst just do yer research...........its BAD.Small time drug users put in witrh heavy gang members.......more of the race.v.race that destroys the States.....build bigger prisons tio house more inmates its an industrty just like yer rehab/detox industry.Sorry for my ramble ......Take care ..............Davey
Thanks for the responses Davey & Travis.
She was not in prison, just short stints in jail -- longest was about 5 months -- & her felonies were for street walking if you get my drift. Not anything real serious like burglary or something.
She has never even been caught with drugs, just paraphenalia once or twice....
I just can't believe this. You're right the U.S. basically SUCKS with finding any help whatsoever & if you do find it, they tell you you have to wait a few years for help.
She can't even get disability payments & she has 2 life threatening diseases.
Unbelievable.

Doing a sh*t job at the minute, long hours, bad pay. Want to go and get a new job whilst a college but scared of getting one and them finding out i have a record.... unlike the states, over here, you can get away with not telling employers, but Dundee's a small place...Don't know the prociedure over where you are. All the best to you and your friend, Hope things get better Kev
LAC,
I know a few people with that one disease and nope, no disability for them.
Maybe it's your State too. Plenty of felons in Philly living large and fine.
I'm sorry she's having such a hard time. It's so tough when you chose the right way and then get roadblocked.

Over here you get more help financially if you have one of them, not much but more...

Thanks all.
Con, well, they do ask about her background on the application -- "have you ever been convicted of a felony" yes or no -- and then she has to sign it & declare that it's all true. For most decent & even some not so decent jobs here in the U.S. -- and for most if not all housing -- they do a background check & it all comes out. So if she lied on the application, she's screwed. She has taken the high road & told it upfront to these housing places but she's still screwed.
She hasn't even tried to get a job yet, just trying to find housing. That is another whole can of worms.
She is going to need treatment for one of the diseases after she has the baby. (yes she is pregnant again but at least she's clean & sober right now). Wonder if that will make a difference with state assistance. I told her she should get a disability attorney. That may be the only way to have income. But the housing is still an issue.....
SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS
It pays to keep your nose clean in life....

Very **big ** difference if your clean & pregnant
They,ll make you take tests to check , but if you stay clean & your having a kid- much more opportunities for city, state, and federal aid.
From food stamps to section 8 housing
After the kid is born - even easier to get financial assistance
- - but using - you ruin all chances
