Tramadol

I don't know if any of you saw dr phil yesterday (wed) it was an update on the herion twins. Well the lady that followed them around and taped them was a pill addict. months after the show was taped she got tramadol from her dr. for legit pain. anywho the tramadol set her off in a matter of 48 hours to where she was out coping herion. I don't know about any of you but this REALLY scared the sh*t out of me. My family dr. called that in for me about 3 months ago due to my arthritis pain. He is 100% aware of my addiction/stay in rehab. So I called the pharmacy and asked the pharmacist kinda WTF? she explained to me that it isn't considered a narcotic/opiod and that sometimes it is even perscribed to help people come off of narcotics. we talked for a few minutes and I asked he what she would do if she was me? she said I should not pick it up and forget about it. If it wasn't for this board I wouldn't have even thought twice about takeing it cause it isn't a narcotic. but because of some of the people here who have had a problem with it I knew to be cautious. so for that I am very grateful. It goes to show you that dr's don't know everything. I truely shook for about an hour last night after hearing that story, it made me realize just how easily I could fall if I am not extremly careful. I hope everyone is doing well. Ang
I saw that show too Angela, I was surprised (though I shouldn't have been) to see the story about the man who was an addict and ran the recovery group.

Hope that you are doing well.
Hey Angela...good for you for making that choice.

Kat and I were talking the other night about Tramadol and both of us agreed that it was one of the worst withdrawals we had ever gone through. To say it's not addictive is like saying Suboxone is a miracle drug. It is addictive to people with addictive tendencies. Stay as far away as you can.

You might want to think about switching drs. A dr that would give you narcotics while knowing your situation probably isn't the best dr for you.

Take care
Lisa

I work in pharmacology (anti-cancer drugs) and that is not the view from here...Tramadol has opiod properties and some (but not all) of its activity is blocked by naltrexone or some other opiod antagonist. Why do you think it is used for opiod tapering? If it had no opiod properties, it would be useless in preventing withdrawals.

People on sufficient doses of Tramadol, for sufficient periods of time, when cessated abruptly, have withdrawal symptoms looking suspiciously like....opiod withdrawals. Ask mollyjean about this one. Also, on the personal front, I have used Tramadol in the past, and yup, it can give a buzz, which can last awhile too. Also, mixing Tramadol with SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft et al) can lead to excessive serotonin levels (serotonin psychosis, seizures)

Nope, if it walks like a duck..and quacks like a duck....its a duck.
even at prescribed doses, it made me want to drive off of a cliff.

It is dangerous stuff.
Janet, I didn't see the part with the guy your talking about? I am doing well thank you for asking. To this day I always think of you when I hear kid rock? Isn't it funny the stuff that sticks in your brain?

Lisa, I agree about the dr. thing. I have seen him for the last 11 years, he knows the whole deal with me and even told my father to have me put in rehab last summer. I did call him back that day when I found out what he called in for me and told him I was very supprised and upset. (not like that pvoved anything)

Elm, the point of my post was not to debate the chemical make up of tramadol?????? I don't give a sh*t what is in it, I only care that it isn't in my body
whoa
Uhhhhh...who said anything about debate? Nothing personal here.

All that was being stated was your doctor was not quite correct in saying this wasn't an opiod, or had no opiod properties. Cowgirl called it a narcotic, and for all practical purposes, it is. I am quite sure you are glad you didn't use it. I said nothing about its chemical structure, just about its properties. As I said, you may check with mollyjean about Tramadol from a very personal experience.

Again, no debates here, except perhaps with your doctor. They can debate it with the UW Dept of Pharmacology if they wish......
Excuse me, I'm just butting in here to say hello to Elim....

Butt away, I owe you and some other special people some e-mails. Beats debates.
elm, yeah a whole lot of things beat debates?????
I was given Tramadol(Ultram) in detox the lat time I went..I had no withdrawals and was comung off 40 mgs. oxy a day...so it MUST have opioid properties. Also when I got out I was still sweaty and weak and my (stupid) Dr. recommended Tramadol...of course it worked like a dream!!! When I posted this on th board I was told by MJ...the addictive nature of it. I stopped and had to go thru wd's all over again. Bad drug.........Sharonn
JMO I feel Ultram can be worse than even Oxys only because they seem to be easier to get.
I lived through hell on them & it took going onto Suboxne to finally break the hold they had on me.
The W/D was one of the hardest things I ever tried to do.Agreed I was WAY over usen 20+ a day but still it was horriable.
Just weighing in
Have a GOOS DAY!!!
Angela...is it possible for you to switch drs? This one sounds a little dangerous, Knew I had gone to treatment, PUT ME THERE! And still prescribed narcotics when I got out. I have since educated him and protected myself.

I know that we get comfortable with these GP's and don't want to start all over, but in our situations, sometimes we have too.

Take care kiddo...

Lisa
Hey Lisa, yeah I know I need to switch. It is just pure lazyness on my part and the comfort thing too. The office is about 2 blocks from my house so in cases where I am sick (flu etc.) It is so nice to be that close for an appointment. Like I said in my 1st post I feel like dr.'s don't know/have all the right answers and I am very lucky/grateful I have this board to educate myself in cases like this. I have seen other dr.s in that office before (there are @5) but wasn't real impressed. So it's kinda like this....I go when I need to, which is far and few inbetween these days (not like during active addiction, when I would go every week) So I just really haven't put any time or thought into finding a new dr. Thanks for careing!! Have a good weekend
I think you're doing great Ang, but I know for me, that I had to put up as many safety nets as possible. Who's to say that, that one time when my defenses were down and because of the wrong dr, I was able to get pills? I can't go there. I have to be vigilant at all times. It sucks, but it's my life. Take care, Lisa
Tramadol(ultram) is a synthetic opiod. It was used as a receptor filler for me in coming off oxy's.2 every 4 hours and I had no wd.So,it is my opinion that it is a drug to be aware of.However,I would never put it in the same catagoty as oxy.To get the effect 40 mg of oxy has you would probably need to take 20 ultram, hense sick city. That is just my opinion.Good Luck...
