Greetings to ALL! I have finally decided to go CT after 2 years of about 4 Norco 10s and a six pack of beer 7 days a week. I was wondering if anyone out there has any advise as to the intensity and duration of my coming WD?
Just know that it's not going to be pretty. Start drinking lots of water. Buy some Imodium for your stomach, benadryl to relieve the flu symptoms and help you sleep, and get some multi vitamins. Also Motrin for pain.
My friend I also think you should talk to a dr. going CT can be dangerous. I know of people the have tried CT and had to go to the ER. I am sure your DR can help you make it easier on you. Find an NA meeting that will be a major support system

I have no idea what kind of withdrawls your going to go through but i know what Im going through trying to tapper off of vics. I take so many a day sometimes i have to recount how many i had to remmember how many i took. It has been up to 25-30 a day. People keep saying that i need to go to meetings but im not sure what to do. Sometimes i think it would be better just to stay on the pills.
Iv also herd that you could go through some serious w/d on certain things and it could realy hurt you even kill you. As for me, well im 25 years old and i had to have heart surgery last march, but about a year prior to that they started me on the pain pills. I just kept taking them and now i cant stop.
If I can ask you a question... What finally made you decide to get off the stuff??? Thats a big decision after being on them that long. And how many hours or days have you been off???
Hope to hear back from ya.. FRIEND

Try this link for suggestions on easing your withdrawals, I know someone who used this and it worked well.

I decided to quit the Norcos out of concern of long term effect(damge) I could encounter. I work in a hospital and see the effects of disease on a daily basis.
Today is day one without Norco or beers.(Feel to lousy to drink a cold beer)! Also the diahhrea has set in.
So far I feel better tonight than I did early this morning when I left for work.

Can you take a the next few days off? If you can I think that would be great.
That way you can focuse and take of you. When I tried CT ( well there many times I tried ) it was that frist 4 days that were the worst for me. Thats why I just said F**k it and I used.

Marina. I am working only 4 hour days this week... That should help.Plus I am hoping that since I never took more that 4 norcos a day, my WD will hopefully not be as severe as some one who took alot more. I can only hope.It has been just 24 hours since my last dose. I have no choice but to CT since I do not have a current script.
I have grown tired of running out of meds and going about 1 week without any. 3 weeks of norco and 1 week of feeling like crap. Month after month, year after year. I hope I can finally do it. Thanks for your responses.

Thanks Maria.........I am still awake after 2 consecutive nites of 1-2 hours of sleep.I have never experienced this extreme resltlessness! When I am up at PC the jitters lessen somewhat.
Good news Rainman, and best of luck to you!!!
Here's another suggestion to help you along the path to recovery - consider AA/NA meetings. I've found that f2f time is invaluable to maintaining my sanity as I continue to live life on life's terms.
Stay strong!

Rainman, Iwas taking about 17 norcos a day and I tried to go cold turkey. Unfortunately I wast able to do it on my own. after several attempts I decided to check myself into rehab and detox in there. Of course they gave me meds to help with the wd. I am not tellin you this to scare you, if you have a hard time doing ask your doc for something to help with the wd. Its no fun going through and can be dangerous. I am praying for you and hope the best for you. Ann
ANN_Thanks for your sincere thoughts. However, I feel about 80% back to normal today. I just feel alittle drained from the lack of sleep. But the shakes, tosssing and turning and discomfort have disappeared. I only did 4 norcos a day. I find it difficult to comprehend the amount pills that others have stated they take on a daily basis.I do not say this in a negative way, its just that I could never approach those numbers out of fear! How long did you take pain meds for? Also, what treatment did you receive from your doctor and did it work?

Rainman, I was taking norcos for a 7 years. it was only the last 2 that my number of pills went that high up. I ad to get into rehab and detox. I was in a 30 day program. then went through some outpatient therapy. I did the aa/na meeting for a while but couldn't really get into them. most of the meetings in my area are aa and I really couldn't stand going to them. I did find a na meeting but was about a half an hour from my house. Its hard trying to attend when you got 2 young kids and a husband who works. I recently decided that I do need to make every effort to attend a meeting. Unfortunately I am back on vis (broke my arm 2 1/2 months ago) I know its time ot get off of them but I am having a hard time. I broke down today and called my doc for a refill. It makes me so made, cause I thought I had this disease licked, but I am finding out its alot harder than I thought it would be. I was down to 2/day. Buttoday alone I already had 7 pills. (vic 5mg) I feel so helpless against these d--- pills. I am glad you are feeling better and I hope the best for ya. Ann
Rainman,
Glad the physical w/d's have not been bad for you. I was one of those that worked up to the 20+ amts of norco (physical tolerance builds pretty quickly if your supply is not limited) , but I used for less time than you -- about 6 months. My w/d's also were not horrendous, although I never want to repeat Days 2 and 3. The sleep thing is tough but will pass. I don't know why you were taking them, but if you took them at the end for the high, then you may have developed more than just a physical dependence -- the mental part of addiction proves tougher to beat, over time, than the physical dependence. Most of us have learned the hard way. If you don't have a plan for that, I would recommend you seriously consider developing one. JR had a good suggestion, something that has worked for him; others have sought out specialized counseling, out-patient programs, other types of support. Good luck to you, whatever you choose. M.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I feel ok after a full nights sleep. Its hard to believe I slept a full nite.!!!!! Now the hard part will begin. This being to stay away forever. I guess I can only take it one day at a time. I will try to remember one of my favorite Bob Dylan quotes "YOU DON"T NEED A WHEATHERMAN TO KNOW WHICH WAY THE WIND BLOWS." Which means to me that you don't need anyone or anything , in this case pills, to dictate what your life will be like. I pray that we all can find the peace within without resorting to drugs.
I am very proud of you Rainman :-)
You made it trough the night and you got some rest, that's not easy for people with our kinds of problems

Congrats on your decision to quit, although cold turkey is never the best solution. Well, it is the best solution, as long as it's under medical supervision. I don't know that you will have too much trouble with the opiates, as it sounds like you didn't overdo it too much. 4 a day is actually how many doctors prescribe it to be taken. However, the alcohol may give you some problems. I would suggest seeking some medical supervision, and please give it some thought, as alcohol withdrawal can do physical harm, whereas opiate withdrawal, although EXTREMELY uncomfortable, will not kill you. Another suggestion would be to seek out a government run detox and recovery center. In South Florida, we have an organization called CARP, and they will take you in for free, and help you withdraw. They provide you with the medications necessary to feel somewhat comfortable during withdrawal. But most importantly, there is always a doctor on staff and they make sure you are healthy the entire time you are there. Finding something like this would do you a ton of good, and believe it or not, contrary to what alot of people believe, it only takes 3 full days to complete detox, well, from opiates anyway. I wish you the best of luck, God bless you, and I will be sure to include you in my prayers.

Thanks for your response. However, I am curious to know why you mentioned South Florida inparticular????
Probably because he's from S Fla. Rainman, have you cancelled that script you mentioned in your earlier posts? If it's out there, I'm afraid you'll fill it when it comes due, eventually, despite your best intentions. Just the nature of the ebast. Congrats on Day 3 (I think?). How are you feeling? M.
