Were You A Kid Once?

I'll try briefly to just say or ask.......alright we were all kids once.....and teens and young adults........and we've learned about eachothers lives some of us.

Some of us had parents who drank........had the whole thing.......I didn't so I can't say I know how it is.........can ya tell me? If your dad drank and your mom lived with it were ya mad at your mom.......were ya mad at your dad......did ya just accept it..........how about your mom drank and was single.......how about we all had raging parents or a guardian was booting right in front of ya?

So many scenarios.........so many ways to deal..........and even more behind it all.........so I ask..........my daughter..........and I know and I'm trying and I'm in therapy, but comes down to why the hell did I quit........for what.......yeah, yeah self esteem and life...........blah blah.........I did quit for me cause I deserve better but honestly and like you guys with little ones........part of ya I think quits for your children.........maybe I am wrong......I know I did......absolutely.

So, yeah it was her birthday today..........she's 18..........if I call it's a wise remark..........or hurtful one on purpose..........or when I do call I now find she text messages me......alright so I ain't electronically in the know, but it's something.........if I send a card with money it won't be enough or she'll throw it back in the door..............a gift.......she won't meet me or come here......and I sure as heck ain't going there and having a door shut in my face......I'm better than that and never did a soul shut the door in her dad's face ever.

So, we were teens...........I text something like have a happy birthday........I go about my business and don't know like witin minutes I get a text back....just saw it tonight............my therapist thought it was a good idea I texted......very good and I'm breaking the cycle of being defensive to her treating me like a mat.

The text back says:

"THAT WAS A STRANGE TEXT FROM THE MOTHER"

THE MOTHER

My daughter I in no way believe wrote that.........plus the way the words are made smaller like shorthand...........ain't like the others she sent me.......and what in God's green earth does "THE MOTHER" mean?

Thank you if ya even got this far...........say I ain't bryn and just some random person.........what would ya say? I'd say "Look ya beeeech the kid is hurt and you have to keep trying cause it's your kid and ya should have got gifts and ate the rejection and painful words"............yeah I'd say that.......BUT?

EDIT to say I have gotten a few wise a*s texts from her......real cocky smart a*s ones.........which I have wisely just let go and that was that........so in that light she very well may have told whoever she was with like "My mom's a b*tch and look what she texted"...........or she's knocked out someplace........and her friends texted or she's God knows where doing what........see? See?
Hi, Bryn. Hard, hard day for you, lassie. Her 18th birthday is a milestone, and I know how much you would want to share that with her. It's gotta hurt. I wish there were a cut and dry answer, Bryn. All I know is over the years I've seen teens pull away only to come back in their early 20's...providing the door is open. So just keep doing what you're doing..sending her messages and ignoring her mean messages (meant to ruffle your feathers...for some it's a way of trying to see if you still care.). Sit down and write her a little letter about the night you had her and save it for her. One day it will mean the world to her. So sorry you're hurting today, Bryn. Had we only known the pain we felt the day we birthed them was nothing compared to the pain down the road, huh? Keep venting. You need to get it all out..cause it's painful. Now have a hershey and get writing. luv corrinne
What a lovely thought, Corrinne. Bryn, I think you are doing just exactly what's right for you and for her right now - and that is parenting. It's a sorrowful day when these events pass us by (mine turned 18 in rehab).

To answer the earlier question in the post (even if you didn't really want it answered...) my dad was an alcoholic and later a cocaine user who had a second family which I alone out of my five sibs discovered at the age of 13. Sometimes I was disgusted that my mom would stay, but with five kids and a big house in a nice town to raise them in vs. back to her relatives for a place to live with the lot of us...well, now I've got nothing but respect for her decision to tough out 27 years of his s**t. She gave it all up for us - no real life for herself until we were grown. As for him, sometimes I feared him, sometimes I hated him, sometimes I loved him - but what I always wished was that he had the true capacity to love us all back, unselfishly, like a parent should...like you are doing for your girl.

Peace~MomNMore
Bryn like heartache said you are doing the right thing, jsut keep doing what you're doing. You're a good person, you've always got a few kind words for people on here so i can imagine what you're like with your own. I've not got kids so i can't imagine what you are going through, but she will come round....
I stole money off my sister a few year ago and she has not spoke to me since. Every now n then i'll text her and i'm paying back the money cause i now she will forgive me. I get the snidey texts and comments also, but i just let them pass. When the time comes she knows i'm here for her.

About your Q. My Mum and dad drank most of my childhood, my mum still drinks to this day. I blame my dad as he beat the sh*t out of us and my mum over the years( i got him back in 1997 when i was able) and the reason my mum still drinks to this day is cause all the memories of the past 20 odd years. In a way i think it has affected me and my sisters, but on a more positive note, i'm the only one (i've got 5 sisters) thats ever got into drugs or that. Even though some of my past is negative it has made us what we are today. You just get on with it eh? Have a good day all, Kev
Bryn i really feel for ya and all this stuff yer girl is up to ya desrve far more than whats happening....as you said to me i really hate when yer on a downer cos Ms.yer one of most inspirational persons ive ever had the pleasure of chatting to.As for the other stuff in ya post ...as ive mentioned before my dad was an alk and slapped us and my ma about when drunk...my ma eventually kicked him out and we moved over to Ireland then (was in London b4).We aint seen him since...he dont even knows my bro. is dead....as far as i know he could be dead as well..but in a link to my past effecting my drugtaking....yes absoloutly..and i aint feeling sorry for myself...for instance once we had to stay in a homeless home coz he had kicked us out i was bout 10...but seeing the other kids in there ...skinny/pale/scared...i realised at least i had my ma and bro coz we were all very close. After we left my ma got a job so we had a free gaff when she was out so it was open season for us to xperiment on any drugs we could get....although smack was sumthin we had no clue about and we liked our trips better as 16yrs old.My childhood memories are not sumthin i can just dig up it usually just comes to ya outta the blue...like those signs you spoke of Bryn.Keep yer head up and il be thinking of ya o.k take it eze......Davey
..Bryn..
..i posted a lil message to ya on believers thread before i saw this..as i said in that i dunno really wot else to say..so i'll just add my experience with my parents on ere..me mum and da both drank when i was young..my dad heavier than my mum and thats wot led to them splitting up when i was about 6-7 yrs old..i remember when they would come home from the boozer after it closed..they would bring sum mates back with em and have a little kinda party maybe 3-4 times a week..being a kid it was kinda exciting and that..but looking back it makes me kinda angry ya know..i had my sisters looking after me when my mum n dad were out..and when they came home with their posse of pissheads my sisters would look at each other.i know now that look meant, for f***sake another night of this s***..it would always end up with my mum n dad arguing and my dad slapping her about..there would be drink left over like cider or that and i would have a few guzzles while no one noticed (to busy arguing)..as i said i kinda enjoyed having their mates down at the time cos they would sling me a few poundnotes..but looking back..i wish it were'nt like that..i dunno if that rubbed off on me growing up and using and drinking..if it did then wots done is done.i don't blame me mum for it and i never had much time for my dad or saw him when i was growing up..him slapping my mum about left mental scars on me..he's dead now and to be honest i did'nt really feel nuffin when he died..Robbie..
Bryn, I was a horrible cow when I was a teenager - so full of teenage angst, angry at the world for everything. Admittedly, I was completely psychotic for much of my latter teens, and that was probably why I was so angry at my mother, coz I didn't know I was psychotic - I just knew I was so unhappy I wanted to die. She was my mother. I was sick. She should have known, and helped me, instead of ignoring it and hoping it would go away.

But I had a completely normal upbringing. No alkies, no junkies - a few nutters (schizophrenia runs in my family. Which is precisely why she should have known I was sick, and why she should have helped me, instead of making feel guilty for being ill), but a pretty standard upbringing, with no major crises or dramas.

You daughter will probably go through a few years of being anti-mum, and probably blames you for all her f*** ups. But eventually she'll learn to appreciate you all over again, especially if she has kids of her own. She's being rebellious, and you're an easy target. I understand it must be heartbreaking, but try to grow a thick skin, leave her to find her own way for a bit. She'll come back, and you'll be able to talk eventually. Just not now - it's not the right time. The more you reach out, the more she'll back away - she's learning to be an adult, and is rejecting you. But she'll come round - in her own time though.

I know I wanted to be as far away from my family as poss on my 18th birthday. I went through a few years of not wanting anything to do with my parents. But me and my mum can talk about anything now (except the drugs - not now, not then, not ever - my choice).

You're a sensitive soul, try not to allow yourself to feel so hurt. She doesn't mean to be as nasty as she is. She doesn't know how much she hurts you, and it won't do any good to try and make her understand, coz she'll just think you're running guilt trips on her and become even more prickly towards you.

tattybyebyes!!!!

hello bryn long time no talk !!
anyway i just want to say i was a mean horrible cow in my teen's to my mother i had no time for her atall but when i was about 20 i suddenly realized you only get one mum and when she has gone she has gone forever that made me see life in a different light i felt so so bad about the way i treated her now we are fine but we still do have are moment's . im sure she will come round soon , we all know what it's like in our teen's we feel like everyone is out to get us , no-one understands us , everyone hate's us , we get treated differently etc etc .............Dont give up trying , good luck xxxxxxxxxxx
I had a lot of the feelings like Diff said "as a teen" about my Mom. I was just unhappy angry at her looking back it was NEVER her. My mom's a real great person."I know that don't help you". I moved out at 18 was so mean and natsy my mom moved to Flordia to get away. Best thing she ever did was ignore me. I grew up and distance makes the heart fonder. By the time i was 20 and with two kids I WANTED MY MOM. We GOT closer the further away she was.
Anyhow I don't know why your daughter acts the way she does. I don't think you being a addict made her this way. If you were Mother Threasa she would still be WHO she is. My Mom did have addiction issue so did "does" my Dad. I'm sorry it clearly hurts and wears you down. Sending ya "+" thoughts and wishes.
Man, it's like I was doing a survey huh.........please know how appreciative I am of every one of your responses, and guess what?

It really and truly helped........especially you ladies that were "MEAN, HORRIBLE COWS".........LOL...........it's interesting too how we all had different backgrounds in some ways and then so much the same in others.

You guys sharing all that brought me hope.

Many thanks.........it helped me get a perspective.........and like ZG said I could have been Mother Teresa and she may have been this way as well......??????

By the way.......I had none of that in my family.........no addictions or drink from my parents........they never even fought.........and I wasn't a mean, horrible, cow either.........not to anyone......I'm one of the few people in this world that LOVED my teen years.........and had a great relationship with my mom so all your insights helped me alot.

Hmmmmmm, maybe I will move to ummmmmmmmm, Diff's house......that's far away........cause then I can say "TATTYBYEBYES".......and sound cool.
"TATTYBYEBYES" rocks the casbah me thinks.
I had a perfect upbringing really...always wanted to be the perfect mum like mine was (I'm not)...and yet I went through it too...the mean horrible cow phase...went through a phase of being obsessed by death...only ever once seriously considered suicide but like everything else in life was too chicken...glad I didn't...was obsessed with wondering what life is about, why we're here...and was a b**** to my mum...my worst teenage memory was the day I grabbed her by the throat and shook her...jesus I've never put that into words before...hmm...

When I had my first daughter...suddenly I knew what life was about...why we're here...and you know what I did? I apologised to my mum...for everything...even little stuff...normal kid tantrums...

I don't know how things will turn out for you Bryn...but like I've said before...to know you is to love you...she's got stuff she needs to work through...

Maddy x x x
i too acted ver cow-like to my mother and all that was wrong with her was a nervous breakdown--i didnt speak to her from the ages of 16-17 but y'know what my mom persevered-she didnt kiss my a**-gave me my space and let me vent then told me how much she loved me. Its taken time and granted y'all have some major issues-dont give up and dont give in--if shes trying so hard to be mean-believe it or not thats a good thing cuz if she really wnated you gone or hated you or didnt want you around there would be no response or the phone # would change without word--if shes strill communicating that means that little girl is just screaming for the mother you now can be to her--she just doesnt feel comfortable with the new you--she will--love the stuffin out a her even if you feel like shokin it out istead--keep postin thats all you can do
I also had a pretty good upbringing. We were kinda well off, living in Manhattan, (going to Public Schools though). No- abuse of any kind in my family, Well my Dad liked his after work cocktails, mom never drank.- I have 1 cousin who died OF aids(at 28) but he was gay. Another was a heroin addict ,but he is now clean and lives in Maryland. My 2 brothers and 1 sister - all perfect kids(and now perfect adults)- Moved to Jersey- I went to college(partied out) in Boston- then to LA- So I did have kind of a privileged life
Don t know what started it all but I must have been pretty fuc**ng unhappy about something

Got into hard drugs when I returned.

I remember wanting to
play shortstop for the Yankees, then I wanting to be a rockstar- -my adolescent dreams.

So yeah , I was a kid once- -no worries,no respsponsibilities, and really no reason to turn to drugs- - who knows?? - My therapist cant figure it out either
STILL working on it- -

51 year old kid,
jack
Hi Jacko, I don't think you need an excuse to become a heroin addict. I think it takes a restless soul to pick up in the first place, but it's addictive, hence the addiction. You get some people who have some sort of propensity to get addicted to al kinds of stuff - must be an addictive gene. I don't think I'm like that. I'm a smoker, but most people I know are smokers. I know I could never be an alcoholic. As I write I'm regretting the 4 cans of pissy lager I drank today - feel sick as a dog!

We went out to watch the rugby today, and the first pub we went to, one of my friends was there, and over the past year or so, he has developed a real bad drinking problem. He was sitting all on his own - everybody has given up on him, coz he's so far gone now. I went over to say hello, and he was pawing and slobbering all over me - didn't even realise his behaviour was totally inappropriate. I wasn't mad at him, I just felt so sad, coz he's a lovely bloke, and most of his friends have tried to help him, but to no avail, and now he's like a sad wino that everybody steps over in the gutter. I had to leave the pub and go somewhere else, coz it did my head in to see him like that. In the car later, my friend Alan was saying that he didn't understand it - he used to be a good rugby player - played for the Scarlets years ago, which are our home team, and rated as one of the best team in Wales - he owns a successful business which runs itself, and makes good money, he's got a lovely girlfriend, but doesn't see much of her these days, has a nice house, which he's done loads of work to to make it special, and now he's just a sad old drunk who nobody talks to. I told Alan that there's no rhyme or reason to it. The man has an addiction, and is sick, and that can happen to anybody. It's not funny, and it upsets me greatly that he has become the butt of people's jokes, because he is actually mortally ill. I think alcohol is worse than heroin, coz at least heroin itself doesn't damage your body in the same way alcohol does.

When I made my little speech about addiction in the car, my boyfriend looked at me with some new found respect, coz I knew that he was feeling really bad about what had happened to our friend. He actually said that he was going to ring him tomorrow and go round and try and talk to him. I dunno if it will do any good, but if our friend winds up dead, it may salve his conscience a bit to know that he tried to help him.

take care my friend

love

Diff ~ Your post made me remember some friends who took that road and it really, really is very sad. Most people fail to see, or don't believe the illness part, so they give up - it's hard to stick around and watch that sort of deterioration and folks just move on. Sorry about your friend, it's hard to watch good people self-destruct.

Peace~MomNMore
Yes it is very hard. And it's hard to talk to someone who's in that state. It's hard to find them in a sober enough state to listen, coz when they are sober they're feeling bad withdrawals and don't want to listen. But you simply cannot talk to someone when they're totally leathered. I think alcoholism is the most upsetting addiction to witness in many ways. Ever watch leaving las vegas? That film makes me feel sick just to watch it, coz I've seen many a good person wind up like that. Another one of my friends, who's an intelligent and articulate guy has recently been told he has cirrhosis of the liver, but he's still drinking. It must be killing his wife to see him like that. I know it would kill me to see someone I loved like that. Somehow it feels worse than heroin addiction, coz although heroin affects your state of mind, and you nod out etc, and get real sick when you're withdrawing, I don't think it turns you into a blathering idiot, who people look at with disgust. I know that when I was on heroin, I'd find a nice comfy corner and gouch out when I was loaded, but most of the time I just did enough heroin to feel normal, and unless you knew I was on it, you probably wouldn't guess.

It's a bad old world out there. I'd rather my little girl smoked weed than turned to alcohol, if she was going to get into anything. Alcohol makes you so vulnerable too. It makes people aggressive, and it makes you weak - easy target. How many women have gone out and got drunk and ended up in regrettable situations? We can all relate to that I think.

I think she's just being a teenager...I used to call my mum MOTHER just to piss her off,in fact sometimes I still do!
You are doing your best and she's old enough to realise that.

As for you Q, my mum's an alcoholic, she drinks Special Brew (lethal stuff,I don't think they have it in the U.S) between 8-15 a day, she's a bloody nightmare when she's drunk,I moved out when I was 11 coz I couldn't look after her anymore,I moved in with my dad,who is a heroin addict, but was in recovery at the time.

I've seen all sorts in my short 25 years, and I haven't had what other kids have had, but I LOVE my parents to bits and I wouldn't change them for the world,I know they love me,they just have illnesses.

I'm sure she know's you are trying and as long as you always let her know she is loved-which I'm sure you do. She sounds like a teenager to me.

Hope your feeling better:)

Thanks Kym.

Not sure if it's just the teen thing. Well, now she's an adult according to the law. Just turned 18.

I have no idea anymore. I just don't know. Makes me sick to even think about it.

Thanks though for sharing. Your kind wishes are appreciated.
