Thankfully I have been methadone free since 9/11/05. While I was on methadone I thought it was great. I felt numb to everything and since it was legal I thought I was doing good. As I started weaning off it my opinion started changing. The clinic made it sound like I would have no w/d if I weaned all the way down. That's not even close to being true. Since I had never even heard of methadone before going on it I didn't know all the controversy surrounding it. I have learned more about it since I'v been off it and what I have learned has scared me. I think it is so dangerous and not at all a good idea for people trying to get off pain pills. I was addicted to lortab. I took about 10-15 a day. Methadone was a terrible thing for me. I started reading pro-methadone message boards and it horrifies me how some of those people think. Some of them plan on being on it for life and they don't believe any of the info that states that methadone can be deadly. I really hope anyone thinking of going on methadone does a lot of research about it first.

Doctors should be careful about who they recomend mdone to. The heroin addict who has tried all ways out , and who,s criminal activities have kept him in & out of jails is one thing.
The person who is a bit younger, and who has a vicidan habit - well in my opinion , doctors should be ashamed of recomending mdone.
Mdone gave me a life back- - now it time to think about coming off,but at the time I got on- heroin life had me by the throat. They,re was no such thing a "subs" so it was the only choice. It was also recomended to me by a judge(which made me make a decision real fast) who was tired of seeing me every few months.
just my thoughts,
jack

Hi Jack,
You should be proud of how you've turned your life around with mdone. It's not for everyone, certainly not for a pill head in my opinion. But it does serve a very useful purpose and you are the perfect example. When or if you ever come off of it, just live your own experience. Some people have a rougher time then others. Either way you turned your life around and are a great example of what we're all trying to do..
All the best,
Beck

Hello........Shelly,methd.as a solution/help for addiction to smack really is an individual thing..as with most medications you have yer pros&cons.I can only speak for me&some addicted freinds..it kept me out of prison..after i got on a stable dose(70ml)i could concentrate on rebuilding my life..getting a proper job that i could use my long forgotten trade(metalwork)..also bring up my daughter in a stable routine atmosphere. At the bottom of the barrel of my addiction i weighed just 9stone im 6ft...so it helped me physically get my body into shape. The downside is being tied to it daily..or even yearly(7yrs)..also the side effects..lethargy,sweats,slight conspitation..but really i would rather have all these little probs. instead of waking up sick wondering were the next bag was coming from.I honestly dont know if i will ever come off it..maybe its a crutch,mentally..but it beats sticking a needle into myself 3 times a day.Just my angle....take care...Davey
I agree with Davey. I think Methadone has it's pro's and con's. It seems to be working for him so far and it has kept him alive. I mean let's face it herion addicts don't live a long life. Those that are in active addiction that is. So some people do what they have to do to survive and be productive.
As most of you know I was on methadone from around Jan 2000 to Aug 2002. I detoxed at home. I tapered down from 20-30 mgs to 2 1/2 mgs before I stopped. I had a severe withdrawl that lasted weeks. It was awful. I hit rock bottom detoxing off methadone. My 8 year marriage fell apart, I lost my home, my cars, my business etc. All because I couldn't physically work or get out of bed. I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on my worst enemy.
I don't think doctor's should write it to people trying to kick a Vicodin OR Percocet addiction. I don't think it should be given to people with mild to moderate back pain. I feel the same way about oxycontin. It is over prescribed!!
If someone was in SEVERE pain from a car accident, dying of AIDS, Cancer, leukemia then I don't see anything wrong with a doctor giving it to a patient. It has it's benefits.
If someone such as Davey that has been in and out of prison, using needles, risking aids needs methadone then that his their choice. I would just hope more doctor's would inform their patients of just how dangerous it is. Especially when mixed with Benzo's such as Xanax, Klonopin, Valium etc.

Hello..Rae..your absolutly right..methd.is not a medication to be given out without the patient knowing exactly what they have got in store for them.Being treated for pain&being treated for heroin addiction are two quite seperate things.Withdrawl from methedone can be hellish so as you said people should be made very aware of this.Take care...Davey
