What Is Ephedrine?

What is ephedrine, I know someone who takes and it's like an upper. Is it addicting? This person has lost a lot of weight from taking this. Is it a deit pill?

Travis
It is something that makes your heart pound as it is slowly being ate away at.

If you would like a better answer than that and medical proof, let me know... I'll do your research for you if it will save you from using it.
I believe it is the main ingredeint in diet pills, I am pretty sure, but I could be wrong.

Best Regards,
Tom
Right again Tom. It actually use to be in Redbull but no more.

Yeah, it does make the heart race. It also keeps you awake. And this person who takes it doesn't stay still for very long.

Travis
They wont stay alive for very long either. IT CAUSES PERMANENT HEART AND LIVER DAMAGE.
mrsunderstood

Can he just stop taking the pills without symptoms? He's been using them for some time, enough to lose about 180 pounds. I don't know how many times a day he takes them, but I do know he takes the pills to work.

Travis
They do use it for diet pills. It's like taking speed. Don't do it if you are thinking about it, cuz it is very dangerous.
Here Travis......some info,

EPHEDRINE

Drug Class: CNS stimulant

Ephedrine is a naturally occuring central nervous system stimulant obtained
from the plant _Ephedra equisetina_. It is now also produced by chemical
synthesis, the synthetic product being marketed in the form of its salt,
ephedrine sulfate; it occurs as a white crystalline powder with a bitter
taste, soluble in water and very soluble in alcohol. Ephedrine is closely
related in structure to methamphetamine, although its CNS actions are much
less potent and also longer-acting than those of the amphetamines. Its
peripheral stimulant actions are similar to but less powerful than those of
epinephrine (also called adrenaline), a hormone produced in the body by the
adrenal glands.

Ephedrine has moderately potent bronchial muscle relaxant properties, and
therefore is used for symptomatic relief in milder cases of asthmatic
attack; it is also used to reduce the risk of acute attacks in the treatment
of chronic asthma.Ephedrine in the form
of nose drops is also widely used to relieve nasal congestion associated
with upper respitory tract illnesses. It is also used to treat low blood
pressure, because it constricts blood vessels and stimulates certain actions
of the heart. Common side effects are qualitatively similar to those
produced by amphetamines and are generally milder. Higher doses (overdose)
can cause restlessness and anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, tremor, rapid
pulse, sweating, respiratory difficulties, confusion, hallucinations,
delerium, and (very infrequently) convulsions. The most dangerous symptoms
of overdose are abnormally high blood pressure and rapid, irregular
heartbeat. A dose of ephedrine only two to three times the theraputic
maximum can cause a significant increase in blood pressure. The elderly are
particularly sensitive to overdose, and there have been a few deaths among
such patients. Finally, a number of instances of psychosis, clinically
similar to amphetamine psychosis, have resulted from chronic high-dose
abuse; other effects of chronic abuse have not been adequately studied.

Tolerance develops to the main effects of ephedrine; however, temporary
abstinence restores sensitivity.
Travis:

Im sorry hun but I dont know the answer to your question. I will research it for you though, if you'd like.

I have no motivation to get up and moving today. I am being a baaaad girl, although I have gotten 4 loads of laundry done... not even a drop in the bucket when you have four boys. So, I shouldnt feel sooo guily.

I havent left the house today other than to take the kids to school. I feel guily not being out and about.
Hey Travis,

Ephedra (or ephedrine alkaloids) are a "herbal" stimulant that people have used for weight loss and also as a decongestant. In the past couple of years products containing ephedra were banned by the FDA, although I think there was a recent court case that threatened to overtun that decisions (not sure of the details). Anyway, it is still available in some places because retailers have not complied with the regulations.

It has been linked to heart problems and there are a number of class action suits against the manufacturers.

I used to take it quite regularly (I had an eating disorder before I my probs with coke and sometimes heroin). When I stopped taking it I did feel pretty wiped out for a while, probably even a month after. But it was sort of hard to tell because I was also getting over mono at the time...

Can your friend seek out some help, perhaps from a nutritionist or medical doctor, regarding how he can manage his weight without ephedra? It is pretty dangerous and I also remember it making me pretty high strung...a bit of a b*tch if i may say so myself...

take care,
v
You can buy ephedrine at the conveinence store, under the name "mini-thins"..... Would I take them? No. Have I taken them? Yes, many, many times as a teenager and the only problems I had from it was rapid heartbeat and problems sleeping.

But, now that I'm older and know the dangers, I wouldn't take them...... You could take it every now and then and it probably wouldn't hurt (our soldiers in the military take it all the time to stay awake), but long-term, consistent use could cause heart damage, or so we've been told.

There have been many athletes who have died while taking ephedra/ephedrine..... We don't know if it was the combination of taking the speed & exercising like a madman, or if they had heart problems already, or if the drug itself caused the death...... I think taking it long enough to lose 180lbs is definitely a bad idea & you should talk to your doctor about the risks before you start taking them, too (and get a physical done).

It's not me that taking them, honset! This person who takes them is a friend of mine's boss. She keeps asking me what it is and used for, for a couple of days now. And after a few investigations we discover that he lost a lot of weight from using it and still takes them and doesn't sit still for long.

Is it addicting? I don't think anyone has answer that. Maybe it's not cause it's over the counter. I know it's diffenitly legal, cause he has it on his desk in plain view.

Travis
Hey Guys

Thanks for the info. Personally I would never tauch that stuff either. Coffee and sugar is all I need to get some pep.

Just wondering, why would someone still take ephedrine long after they lost the weight? Is he using it to maintain his waight?

trust me it's not me, I'm skinny enough as it is. I'm 6ft tall and waigh 175 lbs. 4 years of smack use cause me to lose all of my baby fat.

Travis
Hey I got another question. I just found out how much ephedrine is in those pills, it's 25mgs with 200mg of guaifenesin. Is that a lot? Will that do any damage to the person who takes these pills reguraly?
