What's With The Tc's?

Hello,
I am looking for information on TC's (Daytop, Phoenix, etc). My son (21)was sent to TASC (Treatment Alternatives to Street Crime) and they are saying he may need a TC. He was arrested for possesion of heroin (first offense)- it was knocked down to a misdemeanor. He was in a rehab - Veritas Villa - for 2 months, doing well and then had a problem, cursed out the head woman and was discharged. He's telling me and his dad that he'd rather go to jail and have a record instead of going to a TC. I know they are structured but are they that horrible? What are we talking about? Any info would be appreciated. The Villa was 'affordable' to some extent and we were willing to keep him there. I do not know if they would take him back. I've heard of another place in NY called New Directions that is also 'affordable? Has anyone had any experience with this place? any other suggestions would be appreciated. He really was doing so well in recovery, I'd like not to see him go to jail. Thank you.

Hi Trish, My advise to you is to do what you can to get him to go to the TC and not to jail..my son went from jail to a TC to avoid State prison and it has worked wonders. A TC is a theraputic community. Everyone works together to run the house as a family would. There are intense group sessions and a lot of rules to follow. Your son may be afraid of this but it does work!! They start off with no privledges (phone calls, visits, outside food..) and gradually they earn them by following the rules. They attened various councling sessions throughout the day and learn how to run the house(cooking,cleaning...) In the process they learn respect for others and themselves and how to manage life without drugs and alcohol. They all help each other and know what they're feeling because they've all been there. Some go to school while there and get jobs. Some even become councelors there. I was very sceptical before my son went there but could not imagine him in state prison. I am truly grateful to all the people who helped get him in there and to the program. Believe me if it worked for him it can work for anyone who's willing to give it a shot! Hope my info has been helpful and please if you have any other questions about it just ASK....I wish I had someone to talk to back when we first were going through this...and I'd be happy to help anyone who needs info now.lil'momma
