Jack, i got a book out of virgin on sat"redemption" by Stanley "Tookie" Williams. He founded the crips but when on death row totally changed his life around and got nominated for the nobel peace prize on more then one occasion. Arnie turned down his request for clemency and he was executed in 2005. Whilst reading it couldn't help but think that the blacks got ( and still do) ---new orleons--- a rough deal from the gov over there. Even over here if a white youth is gunned down there is an outcry, but down in london with all the gangs n that it's like our gov don't give a damn. Just a thought. MLK had the right idea!! But white America feared that! (not all obviously!!)
Take it easy, Kevin

Kev...i got that book a couple of months after they gave him the lethal injection....he was one big bloke .....tough life though.....chat soon......Davey
Yes, I'm wondering why today is a holiday.
Surely this won't win me any friends, but today this country is falling all over eachother to honor a man who admittedly fought for the rights of all Americans, but there's so much more to it then that.
First off his name was not Martin Luther King. His name was Michael King. His father the preacher Big Daddy King decided at some point to call himself Martin Luther after the Protestant reformer guy. So, he ordered his congregation to also reger to his son Michael as Martin Luther King, Jr.
We have not one holiday in this country that celebrates an individual and their merits. Not our Presidents. See, they all get lumped together on President's Day. We sure got enough war heroes in our country that absolutely would deserve a holiday in their name. Nope, they all get to share Memorial Day.
"I Have A Dream". That powerful and beautiful speech King gave was plagiarized. At least part of it. He copped that off a preacher. A guy I think his name is Archibald Carey he took that from. Pretty sure that's it. Reverend King had also plagiarized quite a few others including something in college.
When I was a kid I remember my dad telling me King was a communist. I don't think that is true and there's no evidence of that although he did take money from the communists for his cause.
So, yes I have never recognized this day as a holiday. I respect Michael King and his tireless efforts. He brought about great social change. I just don't get why he has a holiday. O.K. chew me out or slam me. Call me names just because I researched something before I helped my child turn in papers at school years ago. I'm used to that. I almost just didn't reply here, but that would make me a coward and go against the very things King preached. Tell the truth, and speak your mind.

I never heard about any of that stuff Byrn - but we do know that > >
before Nixon died ( & his veteran presidential advisor David Gergen ) they both talked about the FBIs illegal surveillance of Dr. King.
Along with that weirdo J Edger Hoover more illegal wiretapping went down we can believe
There was also an actual letter found that the FBI sent to Dr. King in 1964, urging him to commit suicide or face the disclosure of surveillance tapes of his alleged extramarital affairs.
Now enough time has passed & I guess enough people have died ,that they can release hundreds of pages of FBI documents relating to Dr. King released under the Freedom of Information Act.
Another thing that pissed off LBJ & the government at that time was
a year before he was assassinated in 1968, Dr. King delivered a speech at the Riverside Church in NYC called- Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break the Silence, in which he called America the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today. Time magazine, which had declared King ;Man of the year 1964, now accused him of providing secrets to Hanoi. The Washington Post said that King had diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people. - -Alot of people went out of there way to smear this man & the intense work he was involved in out of fear- - fear of change.
I get what you,re saying >
With the exception of Washington's Birthday and Christmas, not another holiday celebrates a single individual. To establish a special holiday just for King elevates him to the same level as the father of our country and above the many other Americans whose achievements approach Washington's.Like hero soldiers, etc..
Senator Helms from North or South Carolina(I forget which ) agreed & fought like Hell to stop Today from becoming a National Holiday. The Regan admininstron ,wasnt totally cool with the idea either, but worried about what would be thought of him politically if he vetoed the vote for the holiday. So with controversy it passed & in it went into effect in 1983, in all states except Arizona. When the NFL players association were going to boycott playing the Superbowl which was being held in Arizona-they relented & joined the rest of the country.
Sorry for a long winded post, but I think the bottom line is MLK stood for good,& fairness. All humans can thank people like him if their civil ,or human rights get stomped on.- and they need the blueprints for courage & guidance

Hoover a weirdo, Jack? LOL That's some frightening stuff right there.
Admittedly I don't know much about politics, but I did know the FBI was all over Kings butt. Definately the end of his famous speech was copped. Hey, it worked. Yes, he was named Michael King at birth and legally his name was never changed. Not that any of that matters in the scheme of things. Just a tidbit of information and besides his dad up and changed his name.
The positive side is alot of work gets done on this holiday community wise. It's a big deal for the kids to give some of their time to help out. My only beef with it was as mentioned there's a ton more American's should have a holiday, but hey ya know how the politicians do. As an aside too I remember people way back bringing up the Doctor King's personal life. Outside of his family and stuff. Not sure if it held any truth, but I don't believe any leaders personal lives directly have an effect on their work for social change.
Jack, you are never long winded. I always learn something from you. Now, just be ready for my holiday. It'll be coming up in March. Gifts are welcome.

Bryn There is Fathers day and Mother's day. The rest of the holidays?
Hi I'm Valarie from the Booze board....
I had to reply on this thread. I was somewhat offended by the posts. As you said Dr. King fought for us to be able to voice our opinions. I respect your view as well so don't get me wrong.
I am a child of a bi-racial couple. They were married in 1968. One year after it was legalized for them to get married. Why is it a holiday you ask? Well...IMHO for many reasons. My father can now vote, drink from any drinking fountain, has a right to be educated at all universities, has a right to eat in any diner, has the right to not get beat down by the police just for being black and many many other things. There are soo many other things that would not have been possible without Dr. King. He may have copied his speeches or whatever else but that isn't the point. He got this country to speak of things that many were afraid to even think. It got a debate going that would change the lives of millions of people. Myself included.
So for many of you this may not be any big deal and you don't understand why it is a holiday...but for me personally this is a day to celebrate and remember a man that did so much for this country. Sure there are still alot of problems but at least people of all creeds have the right to life and liberty in this country now. For that, Martin Luther King Jr. should be celebrated. I agree that there are many other American's that deserve a holiday too but that shouldn't diminish this day.
Thank you for letting me hop on your thread. Hope you all are having a great day!

Hey guys,
Jeff I'm not quite sure what you mean about Father's and Mother's day and what you mean about the rest of them? Ya mean why isn't there a sister's day? My point was there is no single holiday in the US celebrating just one person. A great example being Memorial day..........why isn't there say an Audie Murphy day? A holiday where the banks close and the libraries and people get a day off from work because of the heroics of Audie Murphy. I mean it could be any war hero.
Again this is just my opinion and after helping my daughter research a mandatory paper on Dr. King I learned alot...............and not just that Ron Regan gave the green light for thisholiday.
Please don't get me wrong as there's alot of community service that takes place on Michael King day and that's a great thing.
I guess I have to wait until 2027 when they unseal the records that Coretta fought to keep sealed in regards to her husband..........people love to point out that Doc King was a womanizer and employed prostitutes............I could give a rats patootie what he did on his down time.....but why did she go to federal court and get an order to keep them records sealed as she said they will destroy his reputation? I think they got like 800 and some pages on him, and if they aren't true than why the big ruckus.
It's a given the man had liasons with Communists, and surrounded himself with them...........no big whoop there for me either.
Plagiarism is another thing all together............plagiaris away, but giving a sole person a holiday of their own don't jive with me...........again this is just my opinion...........he fought for civil rights not just for black men and women, but for all of us, but a holiday? That'd put him right up there with the founding father of our country who don't get his own holiday. Everybody gets lumped in.
People that have prospered and set "free' thanks to Doctor king I can totally understand their homage to Doctor King.........it's just my opinion and if I feigned elation over it then I'd be a liar.............it's just an opinion.

Hi Bryn,
Thank you for explaining your opinion in more depth. No worries pal. I don't give a rats balls what he did in his personal life either. I do think he deserves a holiday but that is my opinion. You are right that so many others do as well but imo it shouldn't diminish him. Whether he did any of it personally like I said he got a dialogue going that otherwise would not have happened and I wouldn't be here living today if not for him. My parents would be in some prison somewhere because it would still be illegal for my parents to marry.
Thanks and have a great sober day!

Hi Bryn,
What a great country we live in huh? To think if we lived say in.....North Korea....we couldn't even come to this internet site for support or much less have access to the internet.
I always try to be grateful for things even when I feel alone and don't feel I have anything to be grateful for. I am grateful for my freedom in America and I am at the moment most grateful to you Bryn and everyone else on these boards that have gotten me through over 2 years of sobriety! Yeah!!! lol
Have a great day my new friend on the H board. :-)
Edited to say: Gosh Bryn..look at the two of us with polar opposite opinions having respect for one another's opinion. Geez if only the rest of the world was this way maybe wars could end??? It seems so simple to me. JMHO :-)
