Walton comes alive in last three quarters
By JARED MACARIN jaredm@nwfdailynews.com
DeFUNIAK SPRINGS Luckily for Walton, its not always how you start the game, but how you finish.
The Braves came out sluggish and sloppy, but rebounded in the final three periods to run away with a 75-50 victory over Taylor County on Tuesday in the Class 3A regional semifinals.
The win puts Walton (23-6) in the regional finals for the first time in 30 years, and the Braves will host Jacksonville Ribault on Saturday for the right to go to state. Ribault ended the season for the Braves last year in the regional semis.
This feels real good, said Walton senior Jeremy Dunbar. Everyone on this team wants to go to state more than anything, and well do whatever we have to to go there.
Dunbar sparked a secondhalf surge for the Braves that turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 14-point advantage by the end of the third. Comfortably ahead, Walton continued to pour it on in the final period to leave no doubt.
The Braves outscored Taylor County 49-23 in the second half, using their balance on offense and an improved defensive effort to turn the game around.
But things didnt look so promising at the beginning. Taylor County (22-7) got off to a quick start led by super-quick guard T.J. Powell. Powell, who finished with a game-high 22 points, scored 10 in the first period as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-9 advantage.
But things slowly began to change in the second, and the Braves climbed into contention behind J. Leonard to make it 27-26 at intermission.
We werent getting good shots, they just wouldnt fall, Walton coach Jerry Hester said. Taylor County came out and hit some incredible shots, which we knew they could, and we couldnt get in any rhythm out there. I think we may have been too hyped up.
Once they settled down, the shots began to fall and it was all she wrote. Dunbar scored 13 of his 20 points in the third period, while Ashton Campbell scored eight of his nine in the third.
While that pair found their range on the outside, the inside combination of Leonard and Darryl McGhee made things difficult for the Bulldogs all over the floor. While Leonard scored eight of his 10 points in the first half, McGhee took over in the second for 14 of his 20 points.
The duo also had double-digit rebounds, with Leonard pulling down 13 and McGhee hauling in 11. Kenny Walker added to the mix, going for nine points and nine rebounds.
We were getting good looks all game, Dunbar said. We came out in the second half ready to pounce. We knew we could get them. We knew our shots would fall eventually.
The deciding run came with 2:45 left in the third after Taylor County closed to within 40-37 on a 3-pointer by Powell. The Braves responded with a 13-2 run to end the period, led by Dunbar and Campbell.
McGhee then went to work in the fourth, closing things out with 10 points as both teams struggled from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs finished just 9-of-25 from the line, including 3-of-13 in the fourth quarter as they desperately tried to get back into contention.
Walton was 13-of-26.
It doesnt always have to be pretty, Hester said. You just have to end up with more.
