A Short Story

An addict fell in a hole

An addict fell in a hole and couldn't get out.
A businessman went by, the addict called out for help.
The businessman threw him some money and told him to get himself a ladder, but the addict could not find a ladder in the hole he was in.

A doctor walked by, the addict said Help I can't get out?. The doctor gave him some drugs and said, Take this it will relieve the pain. The addict said, Thanks, but when the pills ran out he was still in the hole.

A renowned psychiatrist passed by and heard the addict crying for help. He stopped and said How did you get there?. Were you born there?. Did your parents put you there ?. Tell me about yourself, it will alleviate your sense of loneliness. So the addict talked with him for an hour. The psychiatrist told him he had to leave, but that he would be back next week. The addict thanked him, but was still in his hole.

A priest came by and the addict called for help. The priest gave him a bible and said I will pray for you. He got down on his knees and prayed for the addict then left. The addict was very grateful, he read the bible, but he was still in the hole.

A recovering addict happened to be passing by and the addict in the hole cried out Hey help me, I am stuck in this hole. Straight away the recovering addict jumped in the hole with him. The one in the hole said What are you doing ? Now we are both stuck in this hole, but the recovering addict said, Its ok I have been here before, I know the way out.
Love it !

I hope everybody gets the message that the best help for an addict is another addict.

:o)
Does anyone know where this story generated from? When I was in a treatment center last summer in NC, a fellow addict shared a story he said he had written. This was the story, plus or minus a few details. I've since heard it at a couple of meetings and a major NA convention in Myrtle Beach, SC. I would love to know if the guy I know wrote it and it circulated that quickly, or if it's been around a while. His writing would have been last summer July-August. Did anyone hear it before then?
