American's Hip To The British Wacky Backy

This link is not off topic.........too bad they don't make one of these sites explaining drug terms to us American's people use in England and the outskirts.Oh and I don't mean for us to know to score them.....just to know what terminology is for on here.

Hey, I wanna know what I'm ordering up if I ever get to visit Enland, and ain't no way I'm trusting Jazwan to order for me or Corrinne.

Confuzedamundo.........wanting a squash like Maddy was speaking of here recently............well HELLO us pompous Yankees believe everyone in the free world got to use our terms, language and all that......SQUASH is a dang vegetable, and ya have it around Halloween....not no syrup.........now we have them, but ya put that on shaved ice.........it's called a SNOW CONE.

Here ya all go if interested.....alot of terms here for us American's....."Ummm, yes I'd like to order the Parson's Nose".....that's a chickens tail.....chickens ain't got no tails.........when Tres sees this her waitressing skills will quadruple cause she already thinks she IS British.

Cheers. Give me a 99. Can't just ask for an ice cream cone.

Hey Bryn, cool list!

I was reading about the parson's nose and realized that my mom always referred to that piece as the "Pope's Nose" her family is Polish and Lithuanian.

I had the opportunity to try Haggis when I was in Scotland but I turned it down. Now I think it is probably close to the southern version "Boudin" which is some kind of meat (delicious) stuffed into pig intestine skin, you don't eat the skin, just sort of slide the meat mixture out of it.
Oy, take a look they got saying for everything on there.

Treece, "You're The Bess Knees" honey that ain't a nice thing your friend is calling ya.
Bump haggis is just like minse although i wont dare eat it....you ever tried tripe?? Yuk...there was a thing on tv where gordon ramsey was getting people to try it and they all said how nice it was.

Bryn squash is juice as far as i am aware??? lol Also a 99 well you would think it was 99p too wudnt ya??? Nope not round here!! lol xx
Interesting too is Janet/Bumps she is from down South........pretty sure like New Orleans way..........entirely different fare for eating from what we eat up "norfffff"............forget that Haggis, ewwwwwwwww.

Janet, I'm needing a praline........love them things......pecans and all.
hi there bryn , when we say " the bees knees" it's the same as bogs 'boll***s '...i think it's actually just a derivetive from the dogs boll+++s . it's a really good thing..
..Snowcone..call em slush puppies over ere bryn..lovely in the hot weather..99's a big ice cream with a flake and all the toppings eg: nuts..hundreds and thousands..strawberry juice..well thats my 99 anyway cos ima greedy mofo : ) ..
Ahhhhhh bunny tripe ?..thats for dogs init ?..but posh people eat it aswell..(poshnosh)..it propa stinks..well i suppose different strokes for different folks..
Robbie..
Bryn, I actually live about 45 minutes from South Arkansas. It's a 4 1/2 hour trip to New Orleans. BUT I have drank and danced (and showed my .....) on Bourbon Street for beads. Alot of us Louisianians hang our beads from the rear view mirror...lol...yup gotta know I have a nice little bunch. That's from my wild-child days. Yup, wouldn't touch Haggis but gladly will slurp down some raw oysters and mucho boiled crawfish. I made my oldest son a huge batch of Crawfish Etoufee last week, used 3 sticks of butter for it...no wonder why my cholesterol is sky high. I've also tried alligator, but drew the line when my husband and his bro smoked a beaver...ewww! I will absolutely NOT eat Squirrel and Dumplings, that recipe died with my MIL. I've also eaten some mushrooms from the pasture and ended up with food poisoning. That was soooo nasty.

Robbie, we have Slush Puppies but they are in a cup and drank with a straw. I tasted Ox Tail Soup when I was in Scotland and man, the bacon was killer. I had my first and last taste of Calamari over there too. Would love some fish and chips with vinegar...mmm mmm good!

Oh and good Lord, NO TRIPE! Or Chiterlings...Chitlins...uh uh, no way.
You wouldnt catch me eating tripe...lol. Snow cones...are these really slush puppies cos I thought slush puppies were slushed up flavoured ice in a cup with a straw or spoon type thing???

Dogs do eat tripe too as far as I know?? Not even sure what it is but it doesnt half stink...poooooweeeeeee!

Whats ya fav dish??? Mine has got to be...starter mushrooms in garlic butter with a garlic bread, main course, sirlion steak medium with pepper and brandy sauce, roast potatoes and peas, then for desert choc fudge cake with chocolate sauce and vanilla pod ice cream....mmmmmmm. Its 7:37am here and am starving with all this talk of food. My stomach sounds like thunder...lol.

xxxxx
Maybe it's called squash cos they squash the fruit to make it...except they don't it's just e-numbers and fake colouring and sugar and s***...well no not s***...

I thought snow cones were like ice cream cones...only with like sorbet...that's what they look like in Monsters Inc!!!

Haggis is actually really nice...with mashed potatoes and swede and gravy...

What is tripe exactly? Sounds disgusting anyway!!!
Tripe is animal brains (but i don't know which animal)yekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

I've eaten Haggis , i agree with you beliver, it's delicious with mash and cabbage yummyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Kathy xx
..Alrite Janet..
..oooohhh ok,i got it wrong about the snowcones..slushes are well nice thou..
prefer grape or lime flavour..don't like using the straw thou (prefer to drink it) cos ya suck up all the juice to quickly and it just leaves the ice..wots calamari ?..i've heard it mentioned in movies and that but dunno wot it is ?..yeh fish n chips..have ya had parsley sauce on ya fish..tis well nice..
..Bunny..
..Never tried haggis or tripe, don't think i ever would sample it either..haggis comes from the gut of a cow or am i wrong again ?..but me favourite munch is spaggy bolognaise..luv the way my sister makes it with all diff herbs and other stuff she uses..i can never seem to make mine like hers..Robbie..
Now this is amusing me this thread....not hard to do with me.

Robbie, clamari.........ya say it phonetically like this "galamod"......it's squid, and it's awesome........we need Tina/Misty Eyes over here cause she's Eye-talian and cooks, and the Italians make a mean calamari.....some people fry it too..........good stuff....if you pronounce it the way it's read here in the Italian neighborhoods you get teased.......my girlfriend still calls it calliemarie....is how she says it......think of it kinda like a carafe of wine.......you say it "carafay" and you will get teased for life.

Wow, Janet lives in R-KANSAS.......who knew........I didn't know you were down there, Janet.......got some Philly people from up here moved down there...like alot of people bought their entire extended families.....LOL...."Throw ME some, Mister".......I never did Mardi Gras, but enjoyed a tame NOLA.....and loved them pralines I tell ya.

Herman, "The bees knees"...........Tres thinks that's a compliment.........LOL!

*****IMPORTANT*****

SLURPEE: That's a slushie at a convenience store...it comes out a machine.

SLUSHIE: Wouldn't know if I didn't get a SLURPEE

SNOW CONE: Shaved ice......or crushed ice.......with that crush syrup ON it.

ITALIAN ICE: No such a thing where I come from

WATER ICE: Bestest most awesome summer treat anywhere ever. You scoop it out a container like ice cream with a scooper. It ain't ice though. Promounce it "wooder ice". I'll find a picture of it for y'all.

I want one of them squashed sodas now............we have Orange CRUSH....not the same though I guess. Don't go calling soda pop either. Plain soda, K?
HERE YA GO.......water ice is in the front.........a gelati is on the left....that's a water ice with soft ice cream on top of it...........then a SLURPEE/SLUSHIE is in the back........and obviously custard or soft ice cream on the right.

No Bryn, I'm still in Louisiana, but it's wayyyyyy north Louisiana.

Robbie, I believe they pack that haggis in a sheep stomach. I'm sure I would probably love it. Hey if I can eat Boudin (which they say is sh*t in a rubber...ewww) I'm sure I could get the Haggis down. I suppose if no one tells you what something is you will probably eat it and like it. For instance when I made deer chili, nobody knew and I kept mum.

I am going to try to lose some weight, I think next week I will buy the Alli and see if it gives me *gasp* anal leakage...lol..

I have to do something and I know I can't go and get any super diet pills cause that's what led me down the road to the coke.

Robbie, you are right about the Slush Puppies, you suck all the flavor out and get stuck with ice. I love a frozen coke too...

Oooh and a lemon ice....I buy them at walmart, not as good as going down to the italian neighborhood in Yankeeland, but close.
Soda to us is just plain ole fizzy water!

Yeah haggis is in sheep stomach...but only the top quality ones...the cheap ones are just in a plastic bag!!!

Tripe sounds really gross...

Calamari is lovely...but a friend of mine had octpus recently and said it was foul...had suckers on it the size of 50p pieces...oh that's meaningless to some of you...um...bout an inch and a half across...do you use metric measures?!!!

:o)
calamari is gorgeous .battered squid rings.mmmhhh. as normal squid goes , i had squid soup...nearly chucked....rank!!......................and bryn..bees knees or dogs bollocks is a compliment. .."that's the dogs bollocks"".we'll get there eventually ha ha..i checked them afghan wigs (is that the right name?) and they're quite good..found it whilst searchin for the dead kennedys..work that one out ...lol..
Okay - from the Greek neck of the woods and a former catering goddess =)

The word calamari is the same in both Greek and Italian and refers to squid, no matter how it is cooked, whether deep fried or not. Americans like most things deep-fried - although calamaria lend themselves well to deep-frying and a little garlicky aioli. On the grill in a basket with a little vianigrette - yum! In a salad after grilling and marinating - yum again! Like all seafood it depends on it's freshness and quality. Some can be like chewing a mouthful of rubberbands, but if properly cleaned and cooked - delicious. Octopus, not so much - smaller ones are better, but they are quite popular in many cultures' cooking.

Tripe is not brains but intestines (intestinal tubes - small usually). We have an egg-lemon soup with tripe at Easter - very traditional Greek fare - and it's quite tasty, though EXTREMELY labor intensive. You must turn the tripe inside-out and soak it overnight (for obvious reasons) then scrub it by hand until it is pristine before cooking it.

Haggis - heard it's wonderful and may try it someday. The one thing I won't try is any sort of insect, though I've heard they're quite crunchy and satisfying. Nor am I a fan of kidneys or liver, unless of course we are talking foie gras - my favorite thing ever. How come we can't get it here in the US without taking out a loan? Makes no sense...it's just geese for goodness sake...not like there's any shortage of those.

I love to cook and am a true foodie. Make new stuff all the time and read cookbooks for fun and entertainment. Right now "The Improvisational Cook" is on my coffeetable. Love it, just love it...

..Oohhh so calamari is squid huh..i dunno if i would sample that..probably end up choking meself..im more of a cod n chips..pie n mash..sunday roast person meself..boring i know but we've all got diff tastes in life..i've never been to a propa restaurant in my time..biguns ribs is the closest i came to fine dining haha!!..oh well who knows..when me son grows up and gets rich..he might treat his ole man to a night out at one of london's finest restaurants..
..Janet..
..Talking of frozen cokes..wot about jubblys ?..we use to get em over ere..a triangler shaped lump of ice..orange,strawberry,cola flavours..or the big iceberg icepoles..lovely in the summer..they don't do em no more..just these skinny lil things is all they do and they're finished in 2 mins..anyways..hope all is well with ya'll..much love n peace to ya..Robbie..
Well I think Mom&More should have us a huge B-B-Que, and I'm wanting to taste ginger beer.

Robbie, fine dining you would LOVE it..........the presentation of the food.....the smells and the relaxation of it all..........although any rib place.......them things is wicked expensive.......by the time ya pay for baby back ribs we could do a very high end gourmet place.........it's an experience. Oh your son will be carting ya around making ya enjoy all the world has of fine things.......I can see it now.........he'll say "Dad you must come to meet all my Doctor friends"......you'll be wanting to watch TV and listen to your old time CD's.

Ice Pops........ya got these things in plastic........ya put them in the freezer......they are about 12 inches long.......and 1 inch thick......blue is the best..........so ya freeze them and then ya get scissors and cut the top off.....ya push the ice to the top as ya go.........they're dirt cheap and they are the best..

Maddy, we don't do metric.............no...........we were bombarded years ago and warned in school we had to know it.............cause in 1989 it was we'd be all metric............guess what..........nope...........I like the Euro.....works for me.
