I have been wondering how long it takes to be free of the urge to take pain medicine. I want to increase my pain tolerance. I never liked to take pain meds bcz they made me ick. My sister takes a lot of pain meds and she told me it would help my back. I took the medicine even when it made me tired and sick. Then I would feel better, even better than before. I had extra flexibility and energy. I am a single mother and I have to function. My back hurts sometimes so badly that I cannot get out of bed and I was told if I stop I will get sick. I lost a baby a year and a half ago and I haven't stopped taking painkillers since. I want to stop taking mes but in the middle of the night I wake up in such agony it seems rediculous. I am 34 and I am too young to feel so old. I do not like feeling moodey, jumpy, and like iwant to crawl out of my skin. Please, someone tell me how to ween for physical purposes and how to stop mentally afterwards. What should I expect from a-z? I have an idea but I know that I could deal with serious illness if I do not stop properly. Please someone advise. hank you.
Hi Cyclone,
I am sorry to hear that you are in such agony. It's tough to deal with chronic pain and addiction at the same time. I have pain every day, but I grit my teeth and take a BCpowder and it helpe a bit. I think coming clean with your Dr. and perhaps getting some help from a pain specialist might be beneficial. They would understand your situation better if you told them your dependancy on pain pills and perhaps perscribe an alternate treatment for your back. My girlfriend is going through some severe protruding disk issues and is currently in physical therapy to help strengthen her back. It has helped her...

It's a possibility the excessive pain you are feeling is rebound pain from detoxing. It often goes away once our bodies relearn how to fight pain. Brain receptors have to learn how to be receptive again. Pain is normal during withdrawl and it takes a while for it to pass. As far as the craving goes, if you are addicted to pain pills you will crave them while you are detoxing. After that, it becomes a mental craving. A few of us go to NA/AA. A few do other things. It takes work for them to completely go away but they will pass. The first step is getting off the pills.
Hi Cyclone, and welcome to the board.
Bikeman and 12 stepper gave excellent advise. You're dealing with a difficult issue for us addicts and one we've all tried to seek answers for at different times.
It might help us to help you if we knew what and how much you were taking? I have chronic pain from five ruptured discs but it's not always acute. I've found that I can manage quite well under chronic conditions with non narcotic pain patches and nuerontin, 800mg motin helps as well.
Life and all the irony that goes with it. I did not become an addict due to using pain meds for pain. My problem didn't rear it's ugly head until after I got into recovery.
Don't feel there isn't hope. I hope you consider the ideas given to you here by the above mentioned posters.
As far as weaning, under drs care is always recommended but we've all done it in different ways, most of us went c/t at some point but some tapered. We can give you our non professional advise if you can let us know the amounts.
Good luck,
love, Kat

I argree with Kat on this. Its always best to have a Dr guide you through that process.but it is possiable to decrease alittle at a time.I feel at least for me the mental addiction is the hard part.Thats why outside support can be so helpful.By you comming here you realize that you have a problem.Everyone on here can totally understand how you feel & give you whatever support we can...mj
