I need help with a question. Does anyone have experience with antabuse ? Any success? Other than alcohol and products with alcohol in them, is there anything else that I should watch out for -- i.e., side effects? How long can it be taken?
Also, does anyone have experience living in a halfway house after alcohol detox ? Is it helpful to live that closely with other alcoholics and addicts for a while, for support in staying clean, etc.?
Looking for guidance.
Bob you will find detailed information on Antabuse here:
Antabuse
I can't help with the halfway house concept, but the support of other addicts/alcoholics who are in active recovery is always a good idea.
Good luck, Happy New Year

Thanks, Partner. That was helpful. My alcoholic son recently detoxed and was given the option of taking antabuse which, as I understand it, is an old sobriety help, but kind of out of vogue these days. In any event, his willingness to take it knowing that if he injests alcohol it will make him violently ill appears to be at least a signal, an outward sign, a concrete action that he is serious about pursuing sobriety. He's also struck a deal with a halfway house buddy that the buddy will be with him and watch him take the anabuse every night. Apparently, the antabuse remains effective for up to 2 weeks after the last dose, so there is time for reflection and thought between terminating the dosage and safely injesting alcohol. Only time will tell if it helps and whether he is serious about "taking the cure." Would still like some feedback from others out there who have tried anatabuse while working the steps, etc. I suppose there's also the risk that he will fall off the wagon with some other addictive substance or chemical.
By the way, I've seen numerous other posts by you in several contexts on these boards and I must say that yours is a voice of reason, sanity and sobriety. Straight talk, truthful, without sugar coating, yet not condescending.
You are a blessing.

Hi there is an alternative treatment to Antabuse that is called meltrixon or similar spelling
This was developed for drug addicts but has the happy side affect that it is perfect for alcoholics. It works by blocking the brain receptors mean that drinking has no effect. Well yes of coarse you still cant drive or use machinery but it has no affect on you so there is no point in drinking. But be warned my brother tried drinking whale on it lost his licence but as it had no affect he stopped taking it and well you all know how that story ended
Antabuse works by putting a chemical in to the body that when mixed with alcohol becomes toxic and you have to go the hospital for the antidote

Bob B,
I think i mentioned in one of my posts that i am to date 17 yrs and 8 months clean from alcohol and pot addiction....when i was still actively drinking oh so many moons ago....there was a time that i was put on Antabuse by a well meaning physician but alas once the script ran out i returned to the bottle and struggled until i hit bottom and finally had had enough and surrendered to the rooms of AA....
I had also been in many a rehab and halfway house before i finally surrendered and put down the bottle....but in my case i think that those institutions as well as the Antabuse really just offered me a temporary respite from my drinking as i think unconsciously i knew i wasn't really finished with the bottle despite its temporary unavailability at the time....
I had been in one halfway house for over a year only to drink on the same day i was released.....unfortunately many individuals that i had been with in these various institutions also relapsed once they got out and sad to say some are no longer alive....there were those i knew that actually drank on Antabuse which of course can prove to be quite lethal for some in the end as well.
What didn't work for me may well work for others and in the end getting and staying clean is the bottom line......but as far as the secret to getting and staying clean are the choices made by the individual his or herself......
You have to want to want it.....and sooner or later despite the jails hospitals the courts rehabs halfway houses Antabuse hypnosis etc.....reality and temptation will be waiting on the other side of life's door and either you will or you won't.......and the longer you don't....it does get a bit easier......
but for me after all this time it is still one day at a time..
Sincerely MARY

Thanks for the honesty and the straight talk, Mary. You have given me not necessarily what I want to hear, but what I need to hear. And for that I thank you. It helps me stay honest with myself.
