Although I do tend to get headaches quite often I have very rarely had a full blown migraine. However a couple months ago I had two migraines in one week. So I went to the doctor and he prescribed immitrex (not sure of spelling). Anyway today I had another migraine and I took the immitrex for the first time. It really helped. Usually I can get by with excedrin migraine but after taking two of those this afternoon with no relief I took one immitrex. My question is does anybody know if this is a safe drug to take for an addict? I think it is but I just want to be sure. Thanks.
Shelly
I had period related migraines for years and you have my sympathy. What worked for me was 3-4 Advil (with loads of water). If I could catch it in time before it was roaring, that seemed to work and my doc said that that amount was what was considered a clinical dose.....not to be taken regularly, but ok once in awhile. The water is to help your liver along since that amount is very hard on it. I had tried immitrex like drugs before, but they never worked for me. Best of luck. You're in my prayers.
Morning ladies,
I've had period-related migraines as well. I agree with petsmom -- I know the signs that one is coming on and if I can catch it early, it never gets full-blown.
Two things that have worked for me: drinking 8oz of water 8 times a day, and peppermint oil applied to the temples, earlobes and nape of the neck. I'm not kidding about the peppermint oil -- there's data out of Germany about its efficacy for migraines. I carry a tiny roll-on tube of it that I get at Whole Foods. Here's a link with info:
Migrastick
Give the Migrastick a try. I was skeptical at first, but it really works while Imitrex, Max-alt, and Relpax did nothing for three out of four headaches.
Love,
Gina

Hey everyone:
I developed migraines while pregnant with twins. My first pregnancy, age 35, twins - naturally, no fertility drugs. I also developed pre-eclampsia, a very dangerous situation in which they push the maternal health to the wall to give the babies as much time to grow as possible. I could go on and on about that but I'll try to stick to the subject. I was on bed rest then hospitalized for almost the entire pregnancy. If I got a migraine, they tried to break it fast, with demoral, because the demoral was safer than my blood pressure shooting up with the migraine and my stroking out. My body chemistry was so crazy during my pregnancy that I didn't enjoy the demoral like I would now, or like i might of in the past. And thank God for that. After I delivered, they said the migraines might get worse, and they did, then I went into premature memopause, completely, at age 36. No one knows why. I had the migraines for years, couldn't take imitrex, maxalt, etc., cuz it'd spike my blood pressure back up crazy-high like 180/120. Just crazy. Usually, it took stadol nose spray or a shot. then after a few years, they just stopped. Haven't had one now for about 5 years, thank God. The important thing is to catch them early with whatever works for you.

Menopause was good for something, thank God. As mine approached the headaches became less and less and finally went away entirely. Hope you have as much luck.
