Blood Pressure

Hey everyone,

I just posted this on the amphetamines forum but thought I might get more answers here.... can anyone tell me what is normal for blood pressue? What can happen to you if it is too high or low? What effect do different drugs have on your blood pressure short term/long term and during withdrawal? My blood pressure is always low when i go to the Dr and she always says that is okay cause it is better than high is that right? I remember heroin withdrawal made it high though and it was awful! All info much appreciated!

Thank you!

My blood pressure is normally 90/60 --- I am a runner and thin, so it's lower than most people's. After getting addicted to pain pills, I would go to the doctor and it would be 120/80 or sometimes even higher than that. The nurse would always say "That's normal," but I knew it wasn't for me.

One time, on hydrocodone, I had a panic attack and it shot up to 155/101 - definitely high (the bottom number should never be over 100).

On Days 3-5 of withdrawals, it felt like my blood pressure was rising, but it could have been the panic attacks I was having. It didn't last long - maybe 30 minutes. I have beta blockers here that my doctor gave me to stop my migraines (which I never used because I was thinking he would give me more hydrocodone, NOT beta blockers), but I've heard of people using them during withdrawals and I actually thought about doing just that.

Unless your blood pressure is abnormally high anyway, you do not have to worry about it skyrocketing during hydrocodone withdrawals. qq
normal pressure is 120/70

high blood pressure can cause heart related problems and stroke as well as kidney failure. low is usually less of a problem in general but can cause dizziness and fainting.

clonidine is used to treat high bp during withdrawals
Dear Guest, I'm on Day 9 of being clean (from getting off pain pills ) and I STILL can't sleep. I'm thinking of getting back on my ambien because I'm so tired I can't even function.... but what if I take the beta blockers for a few days to help me rest? When my doctor prescribed them, he said that they would make me drowsy..... I decided not to start taking them (they are for migraines, not high blood pressure) because I was too afraid to start taking heart medication at 32 years old (if I start, will I ALWAYS have to take it?).....

I was going to get my ambien refilled today, but after reading your post, I thought I'd ask about the beta blockers. Would that be okay in my situation?
Danielle in my view you shouldnt take the blood pressure meds unless you dr knows why and monitors you. Ambien is addictive and the insomnia will improve on its own. Maybe best to just hang in there as it should start to improve soon
I definitely decided against the beta blockers.... I have hypothyroidism and I don't need to be experimenting with a new medication, even under a doctor's care... You were right, it's best not to get started on something if I don't have to.

I took 1/2 an ambien last night... I know that the insomnia will go away on its own, but I've been such a zombie that I couldn't walk more than a few steps without getting tired. I gave the meds to my husband and only got enough for a few days... hopefully, by that time, I'll be over the hydrocodone-induced insomnia (I'm on Day 10 of being clean) and will be able to sleep on my own.

All my other withdrawal symptoms are completely gone!
Thanks so much for the info guest. Well I am naturally dizzy lol, but I don't faint so I think its fair to say I am sweet as (just fine). I was on day 2 with no P (crystal meth) and had sinusitis when I went to the Dr last and she said my heart rate was fast but blood pressure normal (it's usually low) so I guess coming off P must raise your blood pressure just a little bit, but not crazy like with h. Do you know what illegal substances can cause high/low blood pressure? Thanks for all your info!

Most illegal substances DO affect your blood pressure. Speed and coke, for instance, raise your blood pressure. So does ecstasy. Pain pills must raise your blood pressure, too, because I've met a lot of people at my "pain management" clinic who were trying to get beta blockers as well as narcotics.

Blood pressure is essentially how strong your heart is beating/ the force the heart pumps the blood your vessels. If it pumps too hard, you can have a stroke (your blood vessel could burst & you could bleed out) or you could have a heart attack. If it is too low, not enough blood will get to your organs and you could die (though I'm not sure how low is too low.... I think by that they must mean VERY low)

Once again, I'm not a doctor.... but I AM a hypochondriac and read everything I can on the body, so a lot of this stuff I've committed to memory
Thanks Danielle,

You can learn something every day on this board for sure aye! thanks for the info, I really appreciate it

I try... <smile> I'm not a doctor, though I was studying Biology before I switched to a Business major..

But I AM a hypochondriac, which is sometimes better than a doctor... I read so much about sickness and illness and how to treat it that family members call me first when they don't feel well... just to find out if they NEED to go to the doctor or not.
