Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid found in common protein foods as well as the synthetic sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet). Like other nutrient amino acids, phenylalanine comes in L- (from the Latin levo for left) and D- (from dextro for right) forms. The directions refer to minor differences in the amino acids' molecular structure, as evidenced by light refraction. L-phenylalanine is predominantly a nervous system stimulant, mood enhancer, and appetite suppressant. While D-phenylalanine also apparently has antidepressant properties, it is taken primarily to control chronic pain. Synthetic DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) is half L-phenylalanine and half D-phenylalanine. DLPA has some of the effects of both forms of phenylalanine, although most people take it for the pain-relieving effects of D-phenylalanine.
Benefits and uses
Health practitioners who have used D-phenylalanine or DLPA for relief of pain and inflammation report that it works well for back pain, arthritis, and dental pain. It may be necessary to take the supplement for two to four weeks for the peak effects to be noticed. DLPA also seems to enhance the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture. Some evidence suggests DLPA can help alcoholics or other drug addicts during withdrawal.
This stuff works wonders. I have been taking it religiously for over a year and it seems to of helped in many ways.

Thanks Tim, very intriguing supplement. I will research it more and see what my Doctor says about it with the other Medication I am on.
What I did like about what little I have read is it can be augmented with St Johns or Sam-e, but of course not with your standard AD like Prozac, etc.
I am taking Ginkgo (thanks for the tip) , B-12 , Vit -C, a multi vitimen,, and an Amino Acid mix.

Been taking DLPA for several years, but as with most other amino acids, you should make sure that it is cool to take along with other medications you might be on. also, ensure that the quality of the supplement are the best you can find. Cracks me up when I tell someone about the benefits of fish oil and flax seed oil then they go out and buy some crap from Walmart. When it doesn't work then all the whining starts. You put bad gas in your car and what do you think will happen?? Spend the money where it counts especially when it comes to stuff you put into your body....

GNC and the Vitamin shop are good places, but you can find good supplements online as well. Sometimes much cheaper...

I got the DLPA in 500 mg capsules. Would anyone tell me what amount they are taking of this supplement? Also I have been getting toe cramps and leg cramps almost every day. I bought some potassium and have been eating bananas. I also take a multi, cal/mag, flax seed, b-complex and have a broad spectrum amino horse pill.
Someone said the leg cramps are a sign of withdrawl. I'm 57 days off of p/p's. Should I still be getting these? I'm drinking alot of water also. My mother suffered awful with leg cramps and it was never resolved. I hope this is not something that I am going to have to deal with also.

I take around 1000 mg a day of DLPA, but make sure you get checked-out by a dr. before you take this stuff. It can raise your blood pressure so don't take more that about 1500 mg's a day. I take it in 500mg capsules on an empty stomach about an hour before meals. It is very important that you do not take it with a meal or the DLPA will not be absorbed properly and you will not feel the benefits.

When Detoxing,DLPA and SAM-e[S-adenosylmethionine] have some proven effects with depression and mood.
Vitamin supplements are important with helping amino acids work.Those need to be taken after a meal.
