Celebs & Abuse

Ok yes I guess I am getting bored now, better then out spending money, but I have found myself reading gossip...and this is what I found about Nicole Richie...and what others are saying...you think they have a point here??? Just curious

I think all this focus on celebrity substance abuse just gives regular alcoholics and drug addicts more of a reason to justify their substance abuse. If we could focus on HOW THE HELL ALCOHOL IS LEGAL,and kills millions per year, whether in car accidents or internal organ failure, and how marijuana SHOULD BE LEGAL, and has medical and mental illness benefits, we'd see alot less death and stupidity on the road, people who are not in pain, have healthier emotional states, and less dependency on prescription narcotics and liquor than ever imagined.

Danny why should alcohol be illegal? Curious Why you feel this way.

Cowboys looked real good last night eh?
LMAO

I agree with the alcohol thing. I always said ciggarrets and booze should be illegal. I dont agree with the marijuana. Before my grandma died, they gave her Marinol instead of the percocet. It was too strong for her

With the THC she was able to eat, sleep, reduce pain etc etc

I am entitled to my opinion.
Well, alcohol was illegal for my neighbors son, he is 20. He is currently under suicide watch in the local jail for DUI and vehicular homicide. He killed two of his friends on Sunday night....

Reddog,

I agree with you about the pot thing, being that I suffer from chronic pain, and wanting so badly to be off the pain meds. I did find comfort when I smoked pot....I only did it at night to help me sleep without pain. And then during the day I had no affects from it, where as being on the pain meds, I was in a fog ALL the time.

I am aware that pot can kill when someone is behind the wheel stoned, my 18 yo sons really good friend was killed a few months back riding in a car w/ a 17 yo high on pot, .. his friend also was not wearing a seatbelt, and the guy driving and passanger survivied.........we would find more fatalities from drinking then smoking.....but when it comes down to it.. in a survey I am sure there are more deaths w/ drinking then w/ smoking pot.
This is a pain pill forum and I know alot will have their opinions.....so I better shut up before another fight breaks out...

OMG Janet, my heart goes out to him and his family....we have dealt w/ the same situation here.....death threats to the kids family that was driving....the pain of Joshua's death is still so close, but also what his other friend that was driving and his family are going thru is awful...they want to move and hide until the court date comes about....

Krazi/Traci
Yeah, I can only imagine what he is going through. Tyler went to school with him and one of the kids that was killed. I sure hope it sinks in with him...my son I mean....
Jeff- It mainly relates to driving but not all. I'm no radical on this but something needs to be done regarding alcohol and its abuse. I've just known a number of people killed in alcohol related deaths.

Something like 40,000 deaths occur each year in traffic accidents and around 40% are alcohol related so around 16,000 people die each year due to someone being drunk and getting in a car. That's 5 times the amount of people killed during 911, in for which we went to war. What happenes when you get a DUI..you lose your license and go to forced rehab or whatever. 50% of all murders (that's another 8,000 people), accidental deaths, crimes in general and suicides are alcohol related. There are also tremendous amount of illnesses that are releated to the consumption of alcohol. The number is around 80,000 people a year who die in total. I don't think increased penalties are much of a detterent. There are something like 15,000,000 alcoholics in the United States. There are in the area of 20,000 deaths a year due to illegal drugs or drug abuse, so it's a 4:1 ratio. Yet, Nancy Regan didn't get up and say "Say No to Booze". Prohibition didn't work obviously so maybe a total ban is out of the question. Just like drugs, people will find a way to get it. But to be able to drive over to a bar, a party or a sporting event and get totally ripped, and to do it legally is problematic. Some will say "It's the persons responsibility" but when your are drinking (as with every drug) your ability to make rational decisions decreases with the more you drink. Pretty soon, everything is OK and of course, you are alright to drive. I've seen it 100's of times, literally. When my oldest turned 21 a couple of months ago, her first order of business was to go out that night with her friends and celebrate at a bar. I was pretty worried all night. And I worry about it all the time. I really don't care what people do in their own house..it's when they walk outside that matters. Maybe a BAIID device should be standard equiptment in a car at the very least. Something needs to be done.

Ummm that is called fascism or communism....it does happen in some parts of the globe..hello North Korea! Problem with that is where does it stop...next someone will tell you what to read...what to watch..what to eat...you get the picture.

Its a tough one...but at some point limits have to be made...and choices and consequences of those choices should be enforced. I agree that substance abuse of any kind..steals lives...but I would rather I have the choice than someone make it for me. We all have to be responsible for our own actions or lack thereof...we are very fortunate to have the option to express our freedom and have free will...if someone were to stifle that I don't think I could live.
if weed is a narcotic, why does it make me a zombie? I get a sick feeling.
I agree it should be available to anyone. Alaska can grow for their own usage. We have those crazy mushrooms growing here EVERYWHERE, why are they illeagle? They grow from old cow pastures, but quite frankly I never tried them.
janet:

your post kinda reinforces my point of view. your sons friend is 20...alcohol IS illegal for him...right? the legal drinking age in our state is 21. did it being illegal deter him in any way...no.

legal or not legal never deters anyone. or at least, it never deterred me. i think all our drug laws should be reformed. we are cramming one young man (mostly men) after another into jail on drug charges...the prisons are overcrowded and as far as i am concerned, only violent criminals should be incarcerated. if we legalized and taxed drugs...we could pay off the national debt and endorse free rehabilitation clinics for any addict. to me, this is starting to sound like a better world???, but i am a liberal whack job...i admit it. actually, i think this idea is kind of under the umbrella of true conservatism...goldwater style.

anyway...i hate that alcohol takes so many lives a year...and i don't have children, so i know not of what i speak...but i never knew anyone who wrecked their car from being stoned on pot...if anything, as i recall, being stoned made us drive too damn slow...i do however wonder, many, many times how i made it home from drinking too much. and of course, i am sure we can all relate to having lost someone in an alcohol related accident. booze is just bad news. there is a reason native americans called it fire water.

sorry about your sons friend. is this the same young person who is the child of your sons co-worker??? has your family lost two young people recently??

i am so sorry.

love ya,

sarah
