Hi Lisa,
I finally got some nicotene patches and put one on yesterday. After about 20 minutes, it started to itch something fierce. I scratched and scratched. (I was trying to show our house for sale to someone and there I am scratching the hell out of my arm!) Then, I got soooooooooo dry mouthed -- couldn't even talk, had to drink about 3 full glasses of water. Finally, I looked at it and it was half off anyway, so I pulled it off. Not much success.
Can you tell me anything that may help? Maybe I should cut the dang thing in half? It's Step 1 and I smoke about 15 a day. Any advice would be appreciated. I have some gum, too. And, my chest hurts me. What more do I need? A clonk on the head? I've gotta quit. Hubby wants to, as well. I've gotta run in a minute, but I will check back later today or tom. to see if you have any advice for me. Thanks, and I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!! XXXOOO Natty
Hey Natty,
Whats your doctor say about this? The patch about drove me crazy as well, I felt all nerved up. I tore it off within an hour or two.
Good luck, I really think quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do. I know you can though.

What doe it say on the paper that comes with the patches??
I just found this for you..................
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop using nicotine and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
seizures; or
chest pain or irregular heartbeats.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use nicotine and talk to your doctor if you experience
dizziness;
belching or hiccups;
stomach upset or nausea;
mouth or throat soreness;
dry or watering mouth;
watering eyes;
headache;
runny nose (rhinitis) and nasal congestion (nasal spray);
stomatitis (inflammation of the lining of the mouth) (inhaler);
constipation;
sneezing and coughing;
changes in taste; or
redness, itching, or burning at the patch application site.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
I hope this may help.

Natty..don't put it back on. You're having an allergic reaction to it.
Try the Commit Lozenge. I've heard that they work really good.

I remember when I went in for my hysterectomy. The nurse asked my hun if I smoked.well I did, so instead of asking him how many I smoked a day...which was like 2 a day.she put a patch on me for someone who smoked a pack a day...All I can remember is that I thought my head was gonna blow off, and very sick.....we finally asked what the heck they put on me.well they screwed up and OD me on the patch......it was awful.I feel for ya, call your doctor and try something different........after I went off the methadone I lost the desire to smoke.( I was up to about 8 or so a day now, tx to the meds)...until last sunday.......since then I have only had a few puffs. So I know that I am getting over wanting to smoke too...you can do it too.hang in there...I now have no finger nails now......LOL time to go and get them done ....
You are NOT supposed to cut the patches in half, because of the chance of nicotine poisoning. I have tried the patches before and experienced the same problem.
One thing I did with the patch because it was too strong was, I left one half of the backing on and then secured the patch with a piece of paper tape. Worked good. I didn't want to buy the 7mg one after just buying the 14mg. You could do that with the 7mg one and see if it helps enough to get through the cravings...
Janet's right, don't cut them.
But I really think Commit is the way to go.

Thank you all for your replies. I sure learned something very important -- and that is to not cut the patches in half. I might have done that if I hadn't read your advice. Thank you!!!! A lot!!!! I mean it!!!!
I was talking to a lady in the store (when I was getting the patches) and she had tried every method and only had success with the lozenges. So, off to the store I go again! Does anyone want to purchase (at a great discount) any nicotine gum or patches??? Hahahaha!
Love ya, Natty

If you only smoke about 15 cigs a day, maybe you could start with the step 2 patches. That's what I did. I smoked less than a pack a day. The step 2 patch would make me itch, but only for a couple of minutes. I think that if I had started with the step 1, I would have been putting more nicotine into my body than I had by smoking. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
Natty,
Zyban or Wellbutrin (same drug) works wonders. I don't know if you are on or need to be on an AD, but Wellbutrin is a good one . It makes cigarettes taste so bad that you lose all desire to smoke. I never smoked very much, about the same as you, and I had no trouble quitting. Some insurance will not cover Zyban as it is only taken for nicotine cessation (you would think that insurance would cover this!), but will cover Wellbutrin because it is an anti-depressant. It has worked for alot of people that I know. Good luck!

Hey Lovely Lola, thanks for that advice. It sure makes a lot of sense. I smoke about 3/4 of a pack a day. And I really don't think that I inhale that much. Soooo, you must be right about needing the lesser dose. That's why I thought of cutting it in half -- which I was told was a total no-no. Oh Lordy, more money!!!!!!
I hope you have a great day and a wonderful weekend. BOO!

Hey Sunshine, How are you and that precious little boy? What are you dressing him as for Halloween? A little peanut? (that's what I always call baby boys).
I do take an AD -- effexor and it works well for me. I was on Wellbutrin when I was in outpatient rehab, and it gave me the runs so bad, I had to come off of it. (One of my counselors said it did the same thing to her). But, you are so right, when I was on it, I did notice that cigs were not all that appealing. You say Zyban is the same thing -- is it an AD, too? Wonder if it would "get" me like the Wellbutrin did. Hmmm....
Well, thanks for your help and have a great day!!!! BOO! to you too!

I believe that they are the exact same drug, just named and marketed differently. So if it gave you the runs then so would Zyban. Funny thing is that Effexor gave me the runs SO bad! I lived on the toilet (sorry if TMI folks). Oh well....try the lozenges like Lisa said.
I don't have a costume for Drew. He is only 13 months so too young to trick or treat, but I do want to dress him up. And it's so funny.....one of my nicknames for him is Mr. Peanut!
Glad to hear from you...you "sound" good (does that make sense?!?)

Yes, I know that the patches are expensive. But I look at how much $$$ I've spent on cigarettes a year and it's really no comparison. Have a great weekend and a happy Halloween and lots of luck on quitting!!!
I remember when I was trying to quit many years ago I had tried everything accupuncture, pills , patches ,zyban, What finally worked for me where these filters you would gradually move to the next filter until you were not getting anything from the ciggarette. I have not wanted or craved a ciggarette for about 8 years. Of course I did substitute one addiction for another pills. Ah!! Anyway good luck if you can quit smoking they say you can quit anything.
Lola, thanks, and you are so right about the money. Quitting is the only way to go. I'll get there, just not sure when!!
Sunshine -- that's too funny that you call him Mr. Peanut!! I hit the nail on the head, didn't I? hahaa -- Thank you for saying I sound good.(and yes, it makes sense). I'm doing well, in a good mood, life is good. And clean. How about you? I knew you were having some problems a while back, I'm sure you're okay now -- right? How about your mother? Is she doing any better? If this brings up bad thoughts, just ignore the question. It's okay. I'm trying to sell our house cause our new one will be ready in Jan. It's hard, trying to keep everything clean so when people call, I can show it to them. Also, at the same time -- running my butt off looking at stuff for the new house. All the fixtures and appliances, etc. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I am very busy and that is good! I hope you are doing well also. Have a great weekend!!! Love, Natty

Oh Lord....we went through the same stuff last year with our new condo. I was SO stressed out with every detail. I am not looking forward to doing that again. We will be moving in a year and I pray it is in a finished house. No more Home Depot or Lowe's!
My mom is doing well this week. She was in ICU about 2 weeks ago. She swears, as she always does, that this was her wake up call and she will never drink or drug again. I really want to believe her, but that just sets me up for disappointment. Thank you for asking, though. That means alot.
Hope you have a great weekend! Take care.

Hey Roxy -- where do you buy something like that? Those filter things? I've never seen them anywhere. Please let me know.
Sunshine -- I'm not even going to ask why she was in ICU. I hope you don't get disappointed this time. Maybe she needs to look harder at what triggers her to use and work on that. I'm glad you are doing well.
Time to get off here and get some more winter clothes out!!! I'll check back tomorrow!!! Love to all XXXXXXOOOOO Natty

Good morning everyone...Nice to see you post Tracy.
One thing about Zyban is that you're not suppose to take it if you have just gotten off of narcotics or abruptly stop drinking. Not sure how long you have to wait.
Any luck with the Commit, Natty?
